This tree is less than 1 year old and has multiple spots on the main trust with cankers like the picture.  As I read about treatments for this what they say is the only treatment is mechanical removal.  I'm pretty sure this would kill the tree so I am looking for any alternatives.

Thanks for any help.

Do you interpret mechanical removal as cutting the tree down, or removing the bark under the canker including the cambium layer, or just removing the the canker from the bark surface?

Have you a link or two that tells about this "mechanical removal" ?

for chestnut blight cankers, many recommend "mud packing". Don't know if this would work here.
