We just got our little dog Snickers back about 1:00 AM this morning. We had been to Barbados for vacation and when we returned on Wednesday we found out that Snickers had ran away from my mother inlaw on Saturday the 15th. She lives about 10 miles from our house and we assumed he wanted to come home. I printed up flyers with his picture and distributed them for a few miles around her house. So last night at about 7:30 we got a phone call from one of her neighbors that saw him on their back porch. We drove to their house and couldn't find him but at least we knew he was still alive and in the area. After parking my pickup truck in Grandmas driveway with the garage light on we waited and my wife saw him approch the truck at about 12:45 AM. I had fallen asleep on the chair, my wife would make a good deer hunter she sat for hours waiting for him. He was gone for a week lost some weight had alot of ticks and something bit him on the paw but he is happy to be home and in the warm house. It will make this a great Christmas. Merry Christmas to all.

About 25 years ago, our Australian shepherd was looking for a boyfriend and since we didn't trust her judgement, we carried her over to the other side of the county where a friend of mine had a male Aussie who we thought would be more appropriate.  He had a pen in the backyard and we put both of 'em in there;  he called the next day to say that Lady had apparently climbed over the fence and was gone.  I had an old Jeep that she was used to riding in, so I parked it in his yard with one of my (unwashed) shirts in the seat.  He called the next day and said she was in the Jeep.  (They had 9 lovely puppies)

What a great story, since it ended well for the dog and your family. I hate to see pets on the loose because you don't know if they were abandoned or lost. Glad the little dog made it safely home and is well loved.

Howdy

Yup missing yer dog is a real heartache.

A few months ago the grand kids were visiting on a no school day and I invited them to bring their two dogs with them.  The dogs had been over many times so we did not expect any problems, however an open door was just too much a temptation for the younger dog and she went on a walk a bout.

The kids plastered every post and tree in the area with lost dog posters, along with a couple of folks waiting for a bus I'm sure but she was just plain missing.  We live in a small town with lots of wooded areas and the entire family spent many hours looking for the wayward critter.  The next day while mom was taking the  kids to school they found the missing dog running along a street a few blocks away from the house.  She was okay and it was a toss up who was happier to be home, the dog or the kids.

After school we went throughout the neighborhood recovering lost dog posters and found most of them.  I hope the folks waiting for the bus got the tape residue off.

The emotional baggage losing a pet is so hard my heart still aches whenever I think of the few I have lost over the years.

My dog Skipper went on the lamb late last spring.  He was missing for two weeks and we'd written him off.  We'd put up flyers; called the neighbors, pounds and radio stations etc.  No Skipper.  We figured he'd been in a losing battle with a coyote.  Two weeks later I was working in the vineyard and heard a dog barking at the neighbor's right across the fence.  It sounded just like Skipper.  He's got a distintive 3 note bark.  I finally went and checked and sure enough it was him in a pen next to the guys garage.  This was the only neighbor we didn't call and one whom we don't always see eye to eye with.  I knocked on his door and he didn't answer after several knocks and minutes so I went and released my dog myself.  When he did come out he was more than a little mad because of what I'd done but he got over it quickly.  I knew I could prove ownership as he's a pound puppy and we've got all the paperwork.  That wasn't necessary however.  Russ had picked him up a couple days prior in the middle of the road a mile down from our houses at Midnight.  He'd taken him to the vet for shots which he didn't need but he didn't know and wasn't sure what he was going to do with him.  I offered to pay for the vet bill but he wouldn't take any money because "We're both animal lovers" 8) 8)   We get along now.  We even wave at each other  :)  Skipper was very thin and had scabbed over bug bites in his ears but was otherwise none the worse for wear.  His muzzle was grayer though.  The expression on the kids faces as well as Dee's were priceless when I walked in the door with him 16 days after his disappearance.
This is Skipper.  He doesn't like having his picture taken.  He's a 50/50 Jack Russel/Beagle mix.  We adopted him from a local pound after his former owners gave him up after multiple arrests for car chasing  ;D  The last arrest was for chasing a police car.  After moving here a Conservation Officer friend of mine escorted him home once.  We put an electric collar on him and even after the battery went dead he stayed in the yard until last spring.  Since his adventure he's shown no sign of wanting to run.  He knows the battery is dead right now too.  Before the snow storm last week he went for a walk with Dee and the kids to the vineyard and stayed right at their heels  8)

Our dog died a year and two months ago we are both still heart broken and I want one but at the same time Iam not wanting to go though that again. Ive buried more dogs then I can remember and was heart broken every time. Now we are getting where the dog may out live use so we worry what would happen to it. Pretty stupid I guess but thats how I tick :snowfight1:

Thanks for all the great comments and dog stories. It is amazing how attached you can get to a dog even more so since the kids are grown and out of the house. We just got back from our annual Christmas Eve dinner at Grandmas house and everyone was so glad that Snickers was there to liven things up.He slept for most of yesterday but today he was back to his normal playful self.
