This is my dog Ollie

This is when he was a pup. He's 9 now , the best investment I ever made, all I have to do is look at him and he makes me smile.

Brindles are pretty.

Is this maya?

ohsoloco

Yeah, that's my baby  :)  I was going to post one of those pics, but I figured just replying to this thread would post one for me with my avatar  :D

Notice those long legs of hers.  She's tall enough to rest her chin on the dinner table...SHE thinks that's pretty cool, and will sneak a lick of your plate if you're not careful  :D

asy

Your maya looks just like my Jerry did!

Same expression and all, same colours, so very cute and knowledgeable!

We have border collies at both fincas (or some mix), I will have to get a picture of La Gata (that is "The Cat" - female). She is a cross and is the first calico dog I have every seen. Super smart and very well behaved.

Balin on the other hand is nuts - but very funny. Pretty smart, but not as smart as La Gata.

So, how did I end up here anyway?

We've got a very small American Eskimo named Babe. Don't have kids, she's it.

But last weekendthis "dog" showed up on our property and seems to have set up camp for a bit.

But she can't possibly be a wolf because "wolves don't exist here."

Right. I'm not the only one who's seen them 'round here.

She's a beautiful creature.

Tom

That's exactly what my wife said about the stray cat that hangs around the place.   The way I have it figured, that cat is smart and has decided that he wants to live here.  Getting on my wife's good side is the way in the door.

Yep, she said last night, "I need to think of a name for that cat".  :D

Have you been thinking of a name for the dog yet?  :)

Well, since this is either really a wolf or a wolf-hybrid, it will not be coming in our door. That's not healty for the dog or for us. We think she has pups there. She's been in the same spot for at least four days.

I've been calling her Gray Ghost since technically she isn't real. But her howl is.  :o I go up to the site every day and check in on her, take some pictures and movies. I have not recorded her howl because I didn't think to do video the only day she was howling (when the neighbors' dogs were harassing her). She's just a creature to respect and we are happy to share the open space with her. I'm worried, a bit, about the Alpacas and chickens up the road... but that's their concern.

I'd be happy to take suggestions. What'd your wife name the cat?

Tom

My wife's "new" cat is named TOC. (The Other Cat)  It'll take a little time to see if it sticks.

The Gray Ghost, eh?     Yep, you're well on the way.  :D

There's lots of Wolf Hybrids that get turned loose, apparently.  We have some around here.  I sawed for family a couple of years ago that were proud of having two full-blooded wolves as pets.   I'm not so sure I would want one in my house.  They get a lot bigger than most people think.  We aren't in an area where they are naturally common.  I always pictured a wolf as being the size of a medium sized dog.  Whoa!   Wrong!   These were bigger than a German Police Dog.

Nothing to do with Dogs - but speaking of wild things - it is highly likely I will end up with an Ocelot as a friend in the new place. They are very curious and not particularly afraid of people.  I don't want them as a pet, but man are they pretty.

I am not sure Balin likes this idea. An Ocelot can do serious damage to a dog!

So, how did I end up here anyway?

Here is a little dog picking advice that worked for us.

Our family went to the local Humane Society. My wife and stepson went straight for the pups doing circles in their cages. I started looking for the most mellow puppy I could find because I knew my wife wanted an inside dog. I found this sleepish little mutt that is sized and darts like a terrier, but with golden lab coloring. I got my stepdaughter over to look at it and she agreed it was a very cute pup. A little more negotiating and this friendly and docile mutt named Rosie was going home with us. After six years, Rosie's only concern these days is our 3 year old son chasing her around.

I found out later that the reason Rosie was so sleepish in her cage was that she had been very recently fixed. That will do it to anybody!

Wolves are not pets. They are pack animals but they have no alegience to humans - generally they are scared of them. And they make lousy guard dogs because, if they are willing to stay with you, they think you're the alpha and would let the guarding to you. I don't envy you having to have been around them. Wolves also should not be fed dog food, only raw meet. Otherwise it messes with their systems.

Yep. They are big. This on is probably a large female. Without tail she's almost 4' long. I'd bet she weighs in around 80 to 90 lbs. I haven't seen her stand, but I've seen her paws. Yes, they are as big as the neighbor's St. Bernard's paws.

On the other hand, my real dog is 13lbs. I just bought a 20lb bag of dog food for her which will last well over 6 months. Wolves can eat 20 lbs. in a day - but they like to average 2 to 3 lbs. Egads. I'm sure some of you out there have big food budgets for your dogs.

Roxie

Hey TeaW!  What kind of dog is Ollie?  Sure is a pretty thing!

This is the main 'alarm system' at our house, Jackson (aka Deputy Dog) we have an electric one, but it doesn't work nearly as well. He even has multiple alarm tones, one for someone walking on 'his' road, one for someone turning around in the driveway, another for a visitor, another still for 4-legged visitors, and the last one for when the 'rest of the pack' comes home, mostly me, but also to a lesser degree, my wife.

This is the 'backup alarm' system, Rylie, (aka The life of Rylie) who asssits the 'main' system, and also is in charge of making sure my wife is never alone no matter how breifly she changes location, she even follows her into the washroom, her other duties include making sure the couch doesn't fly off into space (like her 15 pounds would make a difference  :D) and that nothing edible that falls to the floor stays there too long.  ;D

Roxie, Ollie is a Jack Russel, Canadian Cur cross. His mother was a JR.

Asy,

Here's Enzo, my rescued Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The first pic is his response to you for calling a member of his breed "dumb."  ;D ;D ;D I laughed when you said "mutual admiration society." Enzo and I could probably be members too.   ;D

asy

Hey Chisel!

Enzo sure is cute, if I get a chance I'll post a photo of Lucy the ferocious dog.

Tell Enzo I'm sorry for offending him, but if he's a smart dog, then it's likely he got Lucy's brain too, coz I'm DanG sure she didn't get it.

asy,

Enzo says you're forgiven, but only if you give him a treat.  :)
Yes, post a pic of Lucy if you get a chance!

My mother-in-law has a Cavalier King Charles and it lives on a leash.  It goes out twice a day or so for a walk, gets excited looking at lizards through the window, sleeps on the couch, chair, bed, anywhere there is a person or where a person has been.  It is coddled, fed dog bones for treats and dry food for dinner.  Human food is not allowed.  It can't go outside if the grass is wet or if it might get dirty.  It wears a pink bow on its head.

Then, sometimes, it would be inconvenient for the dog to go to someone else's house and the choice is me or a vet.

'I don't tell anybody, but, Charlie (the Spaniel) gets to be a bit of a dog when she's at my house and nobody is around.  We go for walks in the woods and up the drive and play in the front yard.  We've gotten to where there is not even a leash needed. Charlie gets a taste of whatever I'm cooking out back and plays tug of war with a towel.  She runs around the yard with her nose on the ground smelling all the new smells.  She will trail armadillos, deer, and coons but won't leave the yard.  It's real frustrating to her because she doesn't know what she is smelling.  She has been introduced to an armadillo and knows what that is now.

We've even been up the driveway in the rain and played in the water hose.  She won't go into the pond, but then, I probably wouldn't either.  :)

I think somebody ratted on us.   I haven't been visited by Charlie in over a year now. :-\

I'm sure it wasn't Charlie...he had too much fun at your place! Cavaliers are a wonderful breed, but not for everyone. Sometimes I wish Enzo had more street smarts and short hair so I could let him run loose on my dad's farm, but then he wouldn't be a Cavalier. Has anyone seen the cartoon drawing with a genie hovering over a dog that is lying on its back? The caption reads: "This is your final wish. Are you sure you want another belly rub?" That's Enzo to a tee.

OK, I'm sure y'all are tired of me talking about my dog, so I'll shut up.

Anyone that has spent much time on the forum knows about scooter. Anybody that has met him in person knows that his personality is way bigger then his stature. He thinks he is way bigger then his stature. As you can see, he also thinks this is his personal dog house.

This is Scooter's dog Juno.  She is now 10 years old and still acts like a young dog. She is a sweetie.

This is Syndey, and yes, hes sill kickin. He really is in complete dementia now and hasn't a clue who he used to be. We have had him for a good share of half of my life. He still has more good days then bad. He's really starting to show his age now.

Well, I suppose everybody might as well meet dog number 4. Her name is Ice and she is a 6 month old Australian Shephard. I think we must be the animal shelter. Right now this is on a trial basis, but one of our friends needed desperately to find a home for her.

Old syd is day to day now. It looks like he may be getting fluid in his lungs, and starting to have some trouble. Brother-in-law came over today (he is getting ready to retire this next month, been an animal control officer for a long time) He's pretty confident if we take him to the vet they will recommend we go ahead and put him down as he is starting to gasp when he walks around, and when he lays down he has fluid coming out of his nose and mouth. The heat we have had the last couple days has really knocked him down.
