I do not know which one of you boys up North left the door open and blew the pilot light out but this is not funny. Twice today I had to pry frozen logs up off of my saw deck. I had to put anchor seal on my deck to kee the cants from freezing to it. Now someone close the door and light the stove!
ARKANSAWYER
Sorry about that, but I think it was Paul over in B.C. who sent the cold weather over here. It was nice until this week :D 8)
Snowed and blowed all day today and only got just a fuzz off zero. Hard to tell how much snow we got as it all blew around into piles. I can't tell the temp right now because the thermometer is dusted over and no I'm not going out to knock the snow off it. At least the snow has tapered off 8).
Nice here to-day and only -37 tonite kinda toasty :D
I think we should go kick Pauls butt. :D
Heywaitaminnit,Frank and the rest of those Oregon boys passed it on to us :D
But come on by just the same 8)
Sunday... 75 F and Sunny ;D
Monday... 75 F and Raining...Cooling to 45 F with rain :(
Tuesday ... 45 F and Sunny...Cooling to 28 F at present :-/
Wednesday.... Forcasted high 35 F :o
Hey, PAUL... Will you PLEASE Close that DANG Door !!!!!!!!!
Paul
Do you think we should send VA-Sawyer some cheese to go with the weather whine?? ??? :D :D
Those BC boys are always just itchin for a scrap. He did it on purpose I can tell.
Might have to Bill. ;) I've been looking at my firewood pile rapidly disappearing and have been eyeing up my neighbors siding. It's been windy enough he might not suspect me.(I'd leave the side facing my place).
We just got a system in from Hawaii that turned to snow when it hit the Arctic outflow from Andy's place.
-10 on the bank time / temp sign this morn, you know its cold when there is steam coming off of the big lake. :o
I'll take any cheese except gouda. It's not so gouda if you know what I mean, eh ? ;D
VA-Sawyer
It's - 17*C or so guess that would be 0*F .I'm going to my stove and then to bed .... Wood pile is also going up in smoke here ...logs frozen to deck.... mine where like that a month ago . Somebody's IGLOO is unatended and we are paying for it.....I'll be happy to see the robin's come back in another couple or 4 month....Alway's nice to hear those little critters chearping away to let you know that spring is hear :) Oh well a lot of short day's left before that happens..
.Putting a timber frame up tomorow morning that I sawed a few weeks ago I'll take pics but until I get a scanner you'll all afta wait .But when I do I got abox fuul to put up ....Or maybe send the box to the boss and just write in the details ;D :)
Well Paul.........if us Oregon boys sent it to you.........do you want to know whats coming next? FREEEEEEEEZing RAIN. :)
Spent an hour this am (4:00--5:00) de-icing the car to take the wife to work. Heard several large Dougla-fir trees and probably a few deciduos branches breaking and coming down. Waiting for light so I can go see how the neighbors faired. Sounded like one may have impacted a building.
Besides, a couple of months ago when you had the severe flooding.........Frank said we would help.........were just keeping our word, as the flooding will start upon melting here in the next couple of days. Know this storm was earmarked for you Canadians, Frank felt sorry for ya and diverted here.
Oops, I think he did not intend this much tho :D
With snow accumulation and ice ...........Frank probably has close to a couple of feet by now. ::)
You are just about right on that Stephen, for the amt. of white stuff laying around. The branches are really drooping here this moring as the light of day begins to show through the clouds. We have had onnly one major bump so far. This Silver thaw stuff is realy dangerous to have to drive on or through. :-/
All of the radar and satalite pictrures Ihave seen are showing the storms comeing out of the pinapple country, picking up moisture and moveing up across Northern California and then into Oregon. I have been thinking of Tillaway, working in the Astoria area at the mouth of the Columbia river and his family still in Northern California and all this bad weather. The highway people have closed several stretches of our two major highways; I 84 from Portland to Hood River (about 50 miles) and Eugene to Roseburg, on I 5 that runs North and South.
Our temps have warmed to around 28* this morning. Setting at about 1,000 feet I think we will be a bit later than most in being warmed above freezing today or tomorrow. :'(
We have only got about 5" of snow in the past 24 hours and it's still around 40F.
I hope you don't get a major silver thaw.We had one about 30 years ago and it was cool to watch the Alder trees crash to the ground like glass sculptures but what a mess afterwards. It took a long time to clean up.
Well, all I have to say is THANK YOU to whomever sent the snow and cold to Kalamazoo. We have a SNOW DAY!
8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
Snow day, snow day,
Blessed, joyous snow day!
Two of the sweetest word in the whole wild world!
Finally warmed to 15 above today. we can go withgout coats again ;D. Well gloves anyway.
Gus
It has been a bit colder here than it was in VA, but I'm not complaining, it has been a whole lot worse. :-/
Just think how much money you save on sun screen, bug repellent, and ice for the water jug. Logs are frozen solidly now making for more consistent sawing. I bet Tom is miserable sawing in all that heat and humidity plus having to fight the bugs. :D ;D :D
I had a pleasant breeze today that kept the sawdust out of my eyes and also kept the wind chill in the single digits so I wouldn't get overheated. ;D ;D
I give slabs to the neighbor's cause I don't want to mess with them most of the time. Another few weeks and I won't have a slab left. :)
Well it got above freezing today and is to be up to 45 tomorrow. That's better and clost to normal for us. I keep telling my self it is only 7 weeks till March. I am glad that we figured out that it was Paul who made this mess to begin with. Now please keep that door shut.
ARKANSAWYER
I still say it was Frank
:D
Somebody does this to use at least once each year :-/
I had ice on my equipment trailer this morning in the water that was left from the rain day before yesterday. I'd move South but I've about run out of it. .....South that is. :D
Sure it is cold, but I can't believe we didn't keep talking about cheese. I love cheese, we always talk about food but we never talk about cheese. Provolone, cheddar, swiss, heck even good old orange or white american. How about some boursan in the box. I love cheese. :D :D :D Grilled cheese, grilled cheese with mustard, onions and tomatoes!
You said it WM1. I love cheese in all its various forms. Back in the early 70s I used to belong to a club called Cheese Lovers. It was sort of like a book club featuring a cheese of the month. Boy oh boy did I look forward to those monthly deliveries. One of my favorites was a cheese called Gjetost (sp). It is a carmel colored cheese that you would slice wafer thin. It melted in your mouth and was delicious with the morning cuppa.
the weather here is slowly warming. Hopefully I can get enough stone down before the ground trurns to mush.
Tom, it looks to me like you still have a few hundred miles of south left. :)
virtual heat wave here yesterday I think it broke +18 ::)
Better than -10 ther morning b'fore. :-/ Promising to be a nice day again today.
I had the power go out just after the post the made earlier in this thread. :-/ It is now Thursday morning at 6:39 or so. The power came on around 3:45 this morning. for the second time. The thawing is going on, rain is falling pretty good and the temp is around 33 or 34. I had power trucks running up and down the mill driveway much of the night as well and the county road. Not much good sleep.
Yep Rav, I recall those good ol' "snow days" wishes. They have had three of them in a row here, this week. Some schools are even planning on Fridayfor no school; with the temps getting up to the low 50s. 8)
Wheather up-date from northern Maine.
-14F with 29 mph winds feels like -45F
Just a tad chilly :D
WHY I LOVE MAINE....
When it's Christmas time in Maine,
And the gentle breezes blow,
About seventy miles an hour
And it's fifty-two below.
You can tell you're in Maine
'cause the snow's up to your butt,
And you take a breath of Christmas air
And your nose holes both freeze shut.
The weather here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around,
I could NEVER leave Maine.
My feet are frozen to the ground!
Good thing it's only 70 feet to the shop and I gots plenty o' wood when I get there. :) glad it's only 16 weeks till May 1 st ;D
OWW,
I've eaten Gjetost since I was a little kid. It's made from Goat's milk and is really rich.My Grandma would always have that and Lefse around for Christmas Eve dinner at her place.
We pronounce it Yay doe-st. Good stuff!
Frank, it sounds like you are getting pounded pretty bad down there.I haven't seen much on the news about Oregon, but on the news a couple of nights ago it did show that Oregon and Washington were right in line with the Pineapple Express that was coming at us.
Was there much damage to your tree farm?
Went out a couple of days ago, it was 7 deg. needed to put a new o ring in the bobcat, my fingers froze to the valve.
I made a decision that it might be too cold, got back in my truck and went home...Hmm maybe tomorrow...
Like Frank, lost power yesterday came back on shortly this am. than failed again came back on about a 1/2 hour ago.
Several trees came down in the hillls around us yesterday while shoveling ice and snow with the neighbors we listened to approximately 30 large trees falling.
With the power gone several neighbors were nervous about the 150' DF's with in proximity of their homes.
Remember, don't be hard on Paul as Frank told him during the flood we would help. 8)
I am afraid so Paul. :'( I have not been about the traverse the entire farm as yet to to view all of the possible damage. I have heard some pretty goood sized trees falling but have yet to see them. I just came in from repairing one frozen pipe and am trying to warm up. I find, I get colder working in the stinking rain than in a dryer cold with snow falling.
Most of what I have lost have been large limbs from Oak trees. :) I was just at the South end of the farm and found a 16" Oak had fallen, just missing my woodworking shop and the Mechanic shop. ;D
I hear tell that the Pineapple Express from Steve will be here some time on Saturday. It is to get up to 50* and sunshine. We will have to wait and see what Steve has sent us in the form of warm tropical air. 8) 8) 8)
Rav,
If you liked the snow day, you're going to love this, the schools up here are closed on tomorrow (Friday) as the expected windchill is -54 c :o.
Better hope that stuff doesn't decide to swing south it just too cold for man/woman or beast 8)
Not bad right now though only about -34 and a windchill taking it to -39 brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Gosh, I thought we were cold on Tuesday. It was - 7F with a steady 33mph wind. I had to keep my goats shut in their tiny "barn."
After hearing your stories I quess I'm glad to be in Iowa now! Today was +29F and only a 10mph breeze.;D
Now about cheese...One of our better customers stopped by today and asked..."You wouldn't want to buy a pound of blue cheese, would you?"??? Apparently, he had bought more than he needed for deer sausage. :-[ At $15.00 a pound, :o I decided I would let him keep it. Just a little sharp for me. ;)
Linda :)
We need conversion table or a calculator to convert F to C. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Someone mentioned the steam coming off the lake. On the ocean I've heard it called 'sea smoke' and it was very much in evidence on the Fore River (a tidal river in Portland) this AM. We are nowhere near needing icebreakers yet. Recently they were talking about ocean temps still in the 40s. That won't last long at these temps now, tho. It's like looking at a mind's eye view of the Arctic- awful but beautiful. I might like it more if I didn't always get frostnip on my feet- ever since I was a little kid, and I don't think they will ever be right. o well, at least I still have toes. lw
40 C killer heat 106 F
30 C hot summer day 86 F
20 C room temperature 68 F
10 C nice fall day 50 F
0 C freezing 32 F
-10 C normal winter day 14 F
-20 C cold winter night -4 F
-30 C bitter cold -22 F
-40 C killer cold -40 F
Linda,
I don't think it was blue cheese. I think it must have been SHARP cheddar.
:D :D :D
Tarm,
at -40 C killer cold -40 F I guess it doesn't matter which ter mo meter yous use it's just KILLER :o
not supposed to warm around here for at least the rest of the week :'( :'( :'(
Well Im only 90 miles from the coast so it seldom gets below minus 20 Celsius BUT we get a thing called "THE ARCTIC OUTFLOW". Apparently its a wind, nasty wind, that wants to go to sea. Windchill factors in the -40 range. >:(Terrace is known as 'Little Chicago" aconna the wind. On garbage day, you dont get your cans back, you just lassoo any two or three a passin by ;D
I knew it was a bit cold tonight .. But decided to have a peek at the thermometer , it's hoovering in at - 28* C. So I'll be babysiting the furnace again...
FDH could you ,would you turn on the fan and turn due north just fur a weee bit.....
Heck Marcel, It's not THAT much better down here. 29°F at night. Going back down again this weekend. This cold air would be froze before it done ya any good ::) ;D
Our weathermen in Michigan use terms that I wonder if they are they regional or actually a meteorological terms for the cold air masses that blast through here.
A couple are:
Siberian express
Alberta clipper
The Alberta clipper must be pretty official, I hear it down here too.
Have you heard of the Halvorson Himalayan Hiccup? They say thats whats causing all the current commotion.
Oh? !!! And I thought it was only a artic cold snap that was upon us...
It's -24C and it's lunch time
We need a smiley with earmuffs, tuque, wool mits, snowboots

I saw some pictures that Tom posted in the sawmill section and noticed that the trees in Florida still have their leaves on.It must be a Southern thing because we have the same thing here in Southern BC.
Makes me feel sorry for those poor guys living in the North, like Washington and Oregon.
Our Apple trees are in full leaf. Can't wait till they're ripe 8)
Get yer tongue outa yer cheek, Paul. :D What's that on that little pine tree, sand? Is that a "Southern Pine" er uh "Southern Spruce" er....whatzit? :P :D
I'm just trying to hold on til Spring :-/ :D
The hedge in the background is Douglas Fir and they are around 20 years old. They thrive in in the South here.
The white stuff you see are blossoms :P
Oh-h-h-h-h!
So that's a bloomin' fir? ;D
If that is blossom I'm in for one heck of a good load of apples in the fall..... :P ::) ;D ;D
Where making some kind of gain in the temp. It's -20C at the moment .Forcasting snow for rmonday
It got all the way up to -2 this afternoon, gonna get real cold tonight. At least I can keep one arm warm all day! :D Going to Va.next weekend, looking forward to taking the long johns off :)
It was 1 deg F this morning at daylight. Got to 5 at noon, now its -5. this alberta clipper sure is colllllld :o.
news says -21 wind chill tomorrow, guess I'll be keeper of the wood furnace, skidder wouldn't start after it got below +20F.
It's still -24*C but with the breeze it feels like -2000......
isawlogs,
Should I send you out some fresh Apples? :D
DanG! Now you guys are making me feel guilty. I was mullygrubbing about the "miserable" weather this afternoon. I was stuck on a "problem" out by the road, with 50F temps and light rain, for about 2 hours. I thought I was gonna FREEZE! I just don't see how y'all stand it. ???
QuoteGoing to Va.next weekend, looking forward to taking the long johns off
OK but you're a bigger man than me :D. It was 15 below wind chill with +8F air temp here this week, I think I saw the sails on that clipper going by ;D.
:)Paul...
Fresh apples would nice ;D ... But ;D... apple pie would sound better ;) and if it was to get caught up in the post for any time and freeze over :o I could always thaw it out by the wood stove and still have a good time ... 8) Just a thought.... ;D ;D ;)
Do you like Banana cream pie? I was watering the lawn today and it looks like they'll be ripe in a week or so.Got to remember to roll the Watermellons in the morning. 8)
Weather Report from the Crown of Maine
-10F below @ 10:48 a.m.
10 mph wind
feels like -29 below
todays high -4
Tonight's Low -25F
But the sun is shinning :)
this little guy needs a coat ;D
Alberta clipper = fast moving snow squalls
Canadian High = anywhere from a cool breeze to super cold
Arctic Blast = don't even try to start the pickup :-/
Well, Paul, I guess you got us beat. I am just about ready to set out the tomatos here with only 12 to 14 inches left of snow lying around. We could get up to 40* today. Loren told me this morning that the roads were the most dangerous he has ever seen in Oregon, this last week. He is a long haul trucker throughout Oregon, N. Calif. and Western Idaho.
Now, If I can get the waterpump repaired on the tractor I will be in business today. 8)
Paul, I thought you watered the lawn real good a couple months ago, or is this left over saturation ::) :D :D :D
Frank, putting your tomatoes in the freezer are you :)
Loren, probably had enough of this weather to want to quit driving and go to milling. >:(
The weather people are predicting that this coming weeks temps are going to be lower than what we've just had. An Alberta Clipper is supposed to give us maybe 4" of system snow then the Saskatchewan Screamer behind it is going to kick in the lake effect machine and it's anybody's guess what we'll end up with. Snow and cold is the sure thing anyway but hey spring is only a couple months away 8) 8) 8).
Fresh picked apples would be good 8) A couple days ago I was back to the hunting shack just poking around and noticed the tree there still had apples on it. Kinda brown and shriveled and even if you wanted too you'd never be able to take a bite ::).
I might have been stretching uh exaggerating OK ,I was lying through my teeth about the Apples. They won't be ready for awhile.
But man the Cherries are good.
We haven't even seen a Robin yet :)
The cold blast is gone South and the snow all slid off of the roof last night.Really shakes the house when it hits the porch roof.
On the news last night it showed all the Provinces East of Alberta as cold and clear. It's raining outside right now and I'm glad for it!
Weatherman says it's supposed to be -42 tonite. If it keeps up like this I going drain the pool :o and break out the long johns :D. Good news is that the mosquitoes and black flies have finally left 8) 8)
Okay I am exaggerating "just" a little bit. Suppose to warm up tomorrow and snow though.
bill
You mean the mosquitos and black flies are still hanging around? :D :D :D
I could always fall back on that ifin the apples arent quite ripe yet ;D ;D
If Paul offers you some of those cherreis, watch the color. I think the nice plump brown ones come from the back end of an elk. :o :o :D
Well somebody got the pilot lit, it was all of 48 degrees on my back porch today. 8)
Yep it got to a scorching -10*C .... Ah the warm air....
Got some snow last night and this morning , got the plow on the truck headed out and made a couple orfour driveways and broke the pivot point on my plow :o well that sort of put a damper on plowing today >:( We had done the pivot trip last year it should of lasted longer .... Murphy law I guess ???
Well we got it back together this after noon and will be pushing snow in the morning.
Never got much above 5 degrees this weekend, and I was running all over town chasing broken water pipes and sprinkler heads and water meters and (well, you get it) with the Fire Department. Did manage to get the work room in the barn up to 50 degrees to do some much needed home repairs and fix the welder. Got a good start on a welding cart too.
Gotta get back to sawing next weekend, we've got about 4000BF of pine due by February...
Captain
