Will a bar from an 066 or 660 fit an 084?
Thanks!
I don't think it will.
The 066 and 660 run the small bar mount. And the 084 and 088/880 run the old large mount.
Somebody else needs to verify this. But that is my memory.
066 is D025 and the 084 is E031 mount.
Thanks guys, you just saved me from wasting $100 on a bar that wouldn't fit.
:)
Thanks Kevin,
Thats what I was trying to find, but Stihl changed their site around.
You're welcome, no problem. ;)

Thanks Kevin,
Thats what I was trying to find, but Stihl changed their site around.
I couldn't find any info there at all. At least, I gave up. In a lot of ways, Stihl has a nice web site but when it comes to looking up info and part numbers, I'm not too impressed.
066/064 Bar Mount type number 3003. It will not be suitable.
The 084 /088 Bar Mount type number is 3002
As per the catalog that I have only 2 Rollomatic bars are available:
3002 000 9031 (25")
3002 000 9041 (30")
There seems to be more choice in Duromatic Bars:
3002 000 8423 (21")
3002 000 9231 (25")
3002 000 8041 (30")
3002 000 8052 (36")
3002 000 8058 (41")
3002 000 8064 (47")

You can turn the 084-088 bar stud shoulders down and run the small mount stihl bars if you want to keep bars interchangeable.

Great tip .
Hmmm , would the studs themselves be interchangeable ?
I am going to say no, (but I really dont know ). If it was that easy I am sure a friend of mine wouldn't be turning 084 bar studs down also. You can also just grind the studs down ;).
Hmmm... If the center-to-center distance is the same, and only the stud diameter and thread is different, I could just machine some step studs. I've got a lathe in my shop at work that will cut metric threads.
You could mill the 066 bar out to 14mm.

That one is not the small one, but the medium one.
The small one is for the 250/025 and smaller, except the 024/240, that use the medium........

That might be the way to go (if you can be sure the oil holes will still line up). No permanent changes to your saw, relatively simple to do, and you always have the option of going back to standard equipment by just purchasing a different bar next time.

Bar stud changing isn't permanent either, just have 2 sets on hand if need be. Change them out is simple.

Dont know what you call stihl bar mounts in Norway, but over in in the USA my Stihl dealer refers to the Stihl bars as Mini mount, Small mount, Large/Big mount bars. Just as I do.
Never heard anyone call a stihl bar medium mount yet.
Even Bailey's list them as MS - mini stihl, SS - small stihl, BS - big stihl in their listings. http://www.baileysonline.com/search.asp?SKW=D025%2BA074%2BE031&catID=710
:D :D Whatever you call it, it still is the medium size....... ;D
When I walk into my stihl dealer tomorrow to pick up some 084 parts I ordered. I will ask him for a medium mount bar and see how hard he laughs at you ST after I tell him your story.
Walter says it best, DA's.

Thanks for the link, that's a better price for a 30" bar than anything I've seen on Ebay.
Considering the large pattern bar, I'd like to stick with 0.375 chain. Should I use a 375 x 8 or 7 tooth rim sprocket?
I would use an 8 pin. The 084 has lots of torque.
I've gone the other way, using a large Stihl mount on small studs by using spacer bushings .
Of course you could mill out the bar and move the oil hole but it's just as easy to get the right bar in the first place . Truth is you can get about any bar to fit any saw if you have the machine tools to do it . Bars are hard old birds ,eat up end mills .
084 running a 30" try the 7 8 9 and see what you like. Also depends on the wood type (soft or hardwoods) and what you are going after.
I bought a big stihl mount GB pro top 30" 3/8 063 new shipped to me for $55-$59. The 36" pro top was back ordered and it ended up NLA and was only $5 more.
Like Al says you can make a bar fit anything. Got a few nasty looking burned up bits and blades to prove the fact myself.
We had a good laugh today and the counter man said that is the first he has heard of the medium stihl bar. :D :) :D
If I'm not mistaken an 084 runs an 8 tooth as standard using .404 on a 36" so running 8 or 9 on 3/8" wouldn't be a problem . For that matter just run the .404 that saw will pull it with ease .
You might keep an eye out at Baileys as they often run specials on bars .
It's got a 404 7 tooth on it, I forgot to grab the toolkit with the 375's in it when I borrowed the saw from my brother, and it's cheaper for me to buy another drive sprocket than the cost of diesel fuel to drive up to his place & back to get it. My brother has two 084 heads he runs on his mills, and was good enough to let me use one of them. He's got a 48" bar he uses for bucking big wood, but it's way too long for my mill.
The 404 7 should be about the same size of the 3/8 8. 404 8 should be like running a 3/8 9, I would think. Only cost you the $4 to try it out with 404 8.
I ran mine with a 36" 404 7 buried ripping and you couldn't stop it, but it isn't exactly stock either.

I'll certainly say it's not stock . :D
My buddy runs an 8 tooth .404 on a 42 " on his 084 and has no problems and his is stock . I run an 8 tooth .404 on both the 125 Macs plus the 2100 Homey on a 48" at times . Fact is an 8 is the only size they ever made for the Homelite in a factory type 6 pin drive . I have a pretty good idea if those old antiques can cut the mustard with an 8 that big Stihl ought to also .
