Alright guys I'm new, this is my first post.  Just bought a house built in 1900 and have been completely remodeling it and I'm trying to figure out what kind of wood they built it out of.  The original walls are 1"x15" planks that span as long as 20ft in some sections.  We left most of them in there I plan to use the planks that we took out for other projects in the house.  I planed a piece so that you can see the grain, the board under it is what they look like unplaned.

I guess I should add that the house is right outside of Knoxville, TN.

Southern Yellow Pine, usually referred to as SYP here on the Forestry Forum.

SYP covers several different Pine species; Shortleaf, Loblolly, Slash, & Longleaf.  Determining which by only the lumber is virtually impossible and is usually done by a process of elimination based on the locale.  A Google search will also show the overlapping normal ranges for each species.  Your area shows Shortleaf & Loblolly but your picture strongly resembles Longleaf because of the heavy pitch in the heartwood.  Beautiful stuff.  Because of the straightness, strength, and beauty, it was a common practice then to haul Longleaf great distances for building.  I have knowledge of it being used in Montana.

And Welcome to the Forestry Forum.  Adding your location, etc. to your profile will help us to know and remember.  ffsmiley

What state and location are the house located in? Location would help determine the wood species as certain woods were more popular in building depending upon their historical availability at the time.
