Well even though yesterday and today where the days from hell for sawing, I did manage to get some turning time in. I always have a better attitude after turning some.

This is made out of walnut, curly maple and purpleheart

Still have to finish sand it but thats later

Quartlow,
Make sure you post a picture of the bowls when they are finished.

What kind of lathe do you have?

It's an old Yates American. Imodified it with an outboard turning rig and variable speed DC power.

I can turn 26 inches outboard now

Just got my second tree!

Nice looking setup you've got there.  Did you add the vari-speed DC drive to it?

You have any dust collection for it?

I started out doing it for fun,but since I spend so much on tools I had to start selling which in a way has turned out to be fun in itself,

How do you dry that thick Walnut?

Quartlow

I wish I could answer that, My brother in law  who passed  away  last Jan cut and dried those. He gave me a whole stack of Walnut, cherry, Poplar, and maple 4x4's

Theirs a kiln over at my sisters I'm assuming he just put them in there

A lathe is in deed a wonderful tool for the shop. Make legs, bowls, spools, toys. Its amazing the tools used to make things on a lathe. You can even turn out a threaded bolt to make a [wooden vise] or [turn out rings] and pegs/posts for games like ring toss.

cheers

It's also a vortex that sucks you in, causing you to spend more and more.

  Nice looking work Quartlow .

I have bought a couple of books about that type turning but haven't been able to deploy the book knowledge yet . I am playing with mini lathes still  .  I have been trying to snag a bigger lathe like that at one of the school auctions but not sucessfull yet .

Quartlow

Thanks Don. What kind of mini lathe do you have?
Theres a lot of things that can be done on them. Your only about an hour away, if theres anything I can help you with give me a shout.

I have 2 if them .  A  Jet and a Carbatec . I started out with the Carbatec  and bought the Jet when I toasted the variable speed controller . After $100 bucks it got a new motor and controller .  I like they Jet better  but I have too many acessories to get rid of the Carbatec . Mostly I make pen & pencil sets , tops  and yoyos .

One of these day I  will have to come and see how you modified your lathe  with the outbaord setup  .  Looks    like something I will have to do also .

Quartlow

Well my mods are crude but they work ;D The doors always open

The jet mini is a nice little lathe never been near the Carbatec.
