45° here to, been in the 50's in the mornings. No frost here either, been 70° for a couple days, 60° today, looks like mid 70's Friday. Rain Saturday. 50's and damp next week though. More like October weather. Gardening has been done here now for a couple weeks. Still lots of plum tomatoes down there, just eating them fresh until they go bad now. Got one more squash that isn't quite ripe to pick, looks like a 5 lb'er. Squash vines are starting to show their age now, but haven't gone yellow. Once the cantaloupe matured the vines withered up.

Was a very nice day today.
72° all day. Would of been a great day to stay home and work in the woods.
First day I could smell fall.

Was 72° here also, but not until 3:00 pm. Sunny most of the day. Leaves have been falling for for 2 weeks, moreso on the ash, they are pretty much bare here. Maples and popples probably have about 2 weeks before they are bare. 

Found a few more butternut, some were from seed which looked healthier than stump suckered ones. Cankers. There where some pretty big old butternut stumps in there. It's near the river and bottom of slopes and gullies, so all the good soil washed down on the flat. Still find some cherry, basswood and red oak to. But sugar maple is the top hardwood up here, everything else is treated as pulpwood as they are not abundant. Most anyone using the cherry, oak, butternut or basswood is for hobby, not enough to make a local market. Some guys will have some cut off their woodlot for lumber. Put it in a barn, and may never use it much.

Well we have had a couple of 'false starts' into the shoulder season and it warmed up after each one. 2 weeks ago I started smudge fires in the shop just for the morning to take the dampness off for a couple of days in a row. Then it warmed back up. Yesterday we had a low of 48° and a high of 73 and I worked i a t-shirt. Last night it dropped to 42 with a forecast high of 70 today. They the forecast trend is for dropping temps each day for the next 5. Supposed to have a rain blast overnight tonight. We'll get what we get, but for now I am really enjoying the mild early fall days.

Only in the 50's Been getting some heavy showers here, yesterday afternoon, evening and this morning. No steady rain though. Coming down pretty good now. This will be the last week of clearing saw work. Next week is start of firewood harvesting for 2025. 

Dry here for the remainder of the work week, and maybe into the 60's.

Rained an inch here Tuesday. Was frost on the truck windshield this morning, but did not hit the garden. Porch thermometer read 38F, 14 feet up from the ground. Rained at work starting at about 3:00 pm, dry here at the house. Was funny, clear as bell this morning with stary skies, then fog started around 6:00 am, then clouds, then rain down at work. Mother picked a pale of tomatoes for me to can Saturday. We sure have had lots of tomatoes. There's still lots that will go to waste. You can only eat so much in a year.  Can't see enough to run the saw until about 7:30 am now. Dark as a cave around 8:00 pm now.

Could make and freeze some tomato puree if there is an excess of tomatoes?

Hit 39° for a low this morning. A bit lower than yesterday and the high for today is guessed to be 58 with sunshine. I have 58 in the shop right now. But the wind is between 5 and 10mph steady-ish which is a bit higher than yesterday when I could not have milled without safety glasses on because of a near continuous cloud of sawdust getting lifted up, so I expect today will be a bit worse, but I have to get it done. Let's see how long I keep the jacket on this morning, yesterday was 1/2 hour.

40° here this morning, no frost. Afternoon showers again to. And it was clear this morning and stars again. Sure is weird, clear nights and cloudy days and afternoon showers.  Weather guessers said dry rest of the week since Tuesday, showered every day so far. And we had some afternoon wind, not strong, but noticeable when we had no wind to speak of for a long time. Said will be windy tomorrow. Maybe it will be dry Friday.

The slow downward creep in temps continues. 36° for the low this morning. 62° is the forecast high for today. Yesterday it hit 59 for the high but with a relatively steady wind of around 10mph it remained cool feeling unless you were standing in the sunshine. After the sun got below the trees it cooled right on down. Interesting that the temp last night around 8pm was 47 which is lower than it has been that time of the evening by about 15 degrees. I started a junk fire in the shop at 2:30 yesterday and it got the shop up about 8 degrees in 15 minutes.
 Today we should have less wind which is great because the blowing sawdust yesterday was really annoying after a couple of hours. Looks like a clear day here at first light.

42° here this morning and 57° for the high. Looks like it will drop in the 30's this weekend in the mornings and highs in the 40's next week. Well, finished up my thinning job just in time. Now switching to firewood cut'n, starting Tuesday since it's going to rain Monday and Saturday morning. Need 2 or 3 days rest anyway. 

Saw a couple woodcock in the road at work this morning. Same spot I always see them to. There is a culvert there but no water yet. I thinned up and down a dozen gullies out there I think.

Heat wave at 52° this morning. 
The wind is blowing and I can hear the acorns hit the ground!!!

It dropped to 38 last night after midnight, but began coming back up at 3am and now it sits at 60. I think this indicates the front coming in with the rain late tonight.  We had some pretty stiff breezes before dawn this morning.
We are headed to VT today and should be there by lunchtime. The temp there dropped to 49 after midnight, then rebounded to 60 at 3am and now sits at 55°. I think we will have a typical fall weekend, cool, breezy, and rainy tomorrow when the temp is supposed to stay below 50 all day.

True that! But even if you don't freeze, it can get downright uncomfortable when there is a little breeze. The wind is still gusting here and I expect it will continue until this front passes late Monday. Since my last post I have heard 3 different dispatches for trees and wires down, no power in the area. At least the crews aren't working in the dark this time.

That wind was very busy!!!
An old aspen top broke off and one of the limbs caught on the wire and was hung up on the wire. Lost power at about 8:15 this morning and got it back on about 3:30 the same day!!! 
I am on a dead road and waited 3 days for them to come and move a 6 inch dead fir off the lines.
One road that I saw was closed and another was down to one lane. 
I heard about other problems on some roads too.

I was up at the woodlot looking around and them aspen trees were sure bending in those wind gusts. I wasn't cutting any wood, just looking around. I did see some moose sign. They are sticking to the woods more than they used to in years past. Longer season has made them more timid to come out. Never saw any deer sign for about 3 months up there. Bears are quiet, they have not even eaten all the apples on the wild tree. I never even saw a chickadee with all that wind. It actually got colder from 50° down to 46° by afternoon.

Did not see any signs at all. Most times they will put signs up.
