I have several pine trees I plan to fell. Due to their location I need to attach a felling rope to ensure direction of fall. Can anyone tell me the best way to get a rope up a tree with no limbs. The Finnish Lumberjack on YouTube uses a tool that is a spring loaded grapple that mounts on a telescoping pole. Something like this is what I need. But I cannot find info on where I can purchase them

Here's how we attach a very strong, non-stretching felling rope to a tall tree:
- Slingshot a small weight on a skinny throw line up to a branch crotch as high as you can. Higher is better. Really, much better.
- Pull the felling rope up and through the branch crotch with the throw line.
- Tie a running bowline (if you don't know knots, tie lots) around the felling rope and tighten up that rope to a pulling device or equipment that will start the tree to fall in the direction you want.

Important points:
* a felling rope should not have any stretching characteristics. A load rating of 30,000 lbs is a good start.
* keep anything or anyone that will not be happy with a falling tree out of the radius of that falling tree.
* a half ton truck will not hold a big pine from going where gravity wants it to go. Ditto for small skid steers.

Now you know what it's called, search for "arborist big shot" and you should get hits. My first page comes up for stores in NZ and Aus of course, but if I add Amazon or USA to the search I get American sites as well.

Adding to Andries good advice, you need a LONG pull rope, and it's best not to "pre-tension" the rope. Take the slack out so it's going to reduce the chance of the tree settling back on your saw, and use a good directional felling cut and wedges to set things up. Once you are happy with the setup, then walk the long way around to your winch or machine and start hauling. Or step well back and signal your buddy.  You want a regular hinge to control the direction of fall, and the rope is just to tip the tree over the balance point, while the hinge wood is controlling the direction as usual.

Welcome to the forum @Koondawg !
Ditto what @Ianab and @Andries have said. I was able to get a static rope and throw line from Samson at my local co-op store. Rope was almost 200-bucks for 150'. Its good stuff, worth the money, will outlast me if I take care of it.

Spud/ potato gvns can also be used to launch the throw bag. Needs to be a well constructed device due to the pressures required.

Even quite small quad/ 4 prop drones can pull out a length of light fishing line. The drone can have a fishing line release, if the line gets caught when circling the delimbed standing tree.

The Octo-copters can pull small diameter rope, so are used for cable hauler setups.

Using cross-bows & bows are less favored.
