440 winch drive

My winch drive started falling out of gear on it's own. Does anyone have any suggestions before I start taking things apart. The handle doesn't seem to do alot I have to turn the drive by hand while wiggling handle until I feel it go back in gear. All while the machine is off of coarse.

do you have the 6x6 inch plate off? can you see the spring that holds the handle to one side. if the spring is there then the snap rings that hold the shift fork are missing or the groove they sit in is worn and they moved
