Cool,
Thanks WDH, I really like the cones. The Longleaf pine are surprisingly big.
And I like the table mountain samples.
It is nice to open a box that fills the room with pine smell.

Jeremy,

I have seen longleaf pine cones that were a foot or more long.

Back in 1984, my mother brought back from Florida a bunch of them for Christmas decorations.  ;D

One time she wanted some white pine cones, I found a tree that was stressed by blister rust, and on the ground I filled two 100 lb burlap sac fulls. Typical of my mother, wanting something then not using them, I don't think she used many of'm. :D

Made a trip back east to visit family, I was able to pick up some Jack Pine.
I had forgotten how serotoneus they were. Also picked up some red pine from MN. and some Scotch in WI.
Now to start building.
Still taking any good samples.

I need to scrape up some sand pine, pond pine, and spruce pine for you.  I remember that in Forestry School, one of the most feared tests was the pine cone test  :).

I do not want to cause fear.
I will save room for any more you send my way!

Thanks for the cedar cones.

My pile of cones is looking good. Now to start labeling.

Seems like we have thousands of cones down right now but it's only in the hundreds. :D
You got some of ours already. :)

I saw some nice fir ones on top of the tree. Tree was a small one,and probably would not amount to much.I cut it down for the cones, and as soon as I touched the cones they fell apart. Mother nature way of re seeding. There's always next year.

Yeah, as soon as those fir ripen they disintegrate.

Not really a cone, but a catkin, a yellow birch seed catkin looks like a cone. That would be interesting for a little fun. Only thing is, they are busting apart now to. On the skiff of snow we had last week with a 20 mile an hour wind the catkins dispersed a lot, seeds and bracts all over the snow. I have a mature yellow birch in the back yard and it produces a lot of catkins most summers.  Even some of my planted yellow birch have catkins and they are only 11-12 years old now.  8) Didn't notice them this year though. A moose was out there in the birch, I see tracks.  If you want moose in the back yard, just plant yellow birch. ::) Assuming your in moose country. ;)

I would take catkins. We have a little paper birch but no yellow birch.
I also like moose  :).
We are just out of their normal range. Every so often one wanders through and some one shoots the "big deer"

woodtroll

Hey got a box in the mail.
Thanks cfarm for the cones.

Again to all I will take anything that you may have, the shelf is not full yet.
