I know I am not supposed to have outside links but I don't know of any other way to describe this. Seems like a good idea. Does anyone use diamond wheels for sharpening?

Yes, these are CBN, not diamond, used by many here (search on CBN for example).

Those wheels may or may not work for you depending on the type sharpener you are using.

CBN, is the latest thing and probably faster than the ceramic wheels and "drag" grinding but I'am very satisfied with my Cats Claw and dry grinding. The carbide grits will eventually wear or get rubbed off and replacement is a major investment. Probibly worth a try if you have a machine to handle them. Frank C.

You can get CBN wheels for the Cooks grinder too. I use one. It was pricey and I haven't used it long enough yet to know if it was worth the price. I like the grind it leaves and no shaping needed. Got it from the fellow in Ireland.

the main part I was interested is the shape is already done. I never can seem to get the shape of the wheel just right.

LeeB, do you use coolant with the CBN wheel on your cats claw. Does the cam drag the wheel up the back of the tooth or just plunge it into the gullet, in other words what are you using for a cam. ?? Thanks Frank C.

Frank,
I don't use coolant and the cam is a standard type cam (slightly modified by me for my own reasons) from Woodmizer. It is not like the new Woodmizer cbn sharpeners. The disk is a wheel that looks much the same as the aluminum carbide rocks do and works the same way. I thought I remembered there being another manufacturer mentioned on one of the old posts about cbn wheels, but I haven't been able to find it so far. The wheel I have is 5" x 1/4" x 1/2" arbor. I think Tom also offered one in 3/8 thickness.

Just to clarify two things about CBN wheels, CBN is cubic boron nitride, which has the same molecular structure as diamond, hence the high hardness. However, diamond is pure carbon and will diffuse into steel at elevated temperatures making it a poor choice for grinding steel. And CBN is not a carbide, which is a ceramic containing carbon and a metal (like tungsten). Also, normal grinding wheels are probably aluminum oxide or silicon carbide. AO is really common, just don't try to grind aluminum with it.

Wood-Mizer offers comparable CBN wheels in 5" and 8" sizes and their blade profiles, but for a little more money. I don't know about differences in quality, but Wood-Mizer claims you can sharpen 1000 blades on their 5" wheel. I have the BMS250 sharpener and am at about 150 a piece on my 9/29 and 10/30 wheels and they don't show any wear. It actually costs more to keep oil in the machine (about 50 blades per gallon or $0.30/blade).

Don't understand, I get a lot of results for searching on CBN wheels,  cbn, cbn wheel.    I click on Search in the menu above (Home, Help, Search, Profile etc.....), then put the search term in the box and leave the rest of the search terms alone (leave asterisk in the "by user" box for example).
