I got a call from a guy with an AC-36 that's been sitting for 10 years while he was away serving our country.  He wants to pay me for my time to come spend a day with him getting it going!  He said that it's still sitting in the same spot it was when they delivered it and he doesn't remember how to run it.  I am excited for it.  He wants me to come by in 2 weeks or so.

After ten years in the service he would get my day at no charge.

Yea I am not going to charge him, but he seemed hell bent on paying me for some reason.  He originally dates back to Loooong Guyland, so it might be a cultural thing who knows see what happens I'm just excited to go try and get it sawing proper.  I don't think he has much time on it.

On top of that you get to try out a Cooks Mill.  Maybe it would be a better fit for you that the other mills that you are looking at.

You: tell him you won't charge him.
He: says he's going to pay you.
You: tell him you don't want any money, as a way of thanking him for his service.
He: says he want's to pay you anyway.
You: gracefully give in.

In short, he doesn't believe in receiving something for nothing. His self-respect requires that he pay you, even if you don't believe it's necessary.

Well said Bruce.

The same goes for tipping.  I will neither ask for nor expect a tip, but I will accept a tip.  :)

Agree with the last two posts, just remember, he's the boss ;D
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

10 years is a long time if it's sat in the weather.  Better bring some Blue Creeper!!
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

4x4American

That's how it'll go down!

I've never used blue creeper, but I've got some stuff that works pretty good it's called Free.  We jokingly called it free the slaves at one of the shops I worked at.  Stuff is nasty but it works real good.  I can't remember who makes it off the top of my head.  Black and white can we got it from some lab in Texas.

Been in touch with the guy.  Was planning on going there tomorrow, but he switched to next weekend.  He asked me to give him a number for what $ I want, I told him I would do it for free on account of him serving our country and all.  He said NO NO NO NO NO!  I might be a vet but I'm not on welfare!  Now you give me a number and I'll go to the bank and get the money for you.
I have no idea what to charge.  Figure will be about 2 hours of driving and a day.

He said that the chains are very rusty, and he's been coating them with a concoction of gas/engine oil to help.  Said his uncle used to use the mix on rusted chains with good luck.

I am basically going to go there, do what I have to do to get it running, do an alignment if needed, figure out what does what, make sure it is sawing straight boards, and then teach him how to use it and give him whatever advice I have to offer.

Just charge him for the fuel for the ride if he really feels the need to pay you. But as others said, I wouldn't charge him. Or, maybe tell him that y'all could swap out time. Have him come to you on a milling day for help.

Nomad

If he insists on paying you, tell him 20 bucks and lunch.

I think the idea of swapping some labor from him is a great idea. The man keeps his honor, he gets some sawing time in and possibly you'll be around as the bugs get worked out of a mill that sat that long.
Sounds like everyone would win.

Magicman

I love that idea.  Your time is a precious thing to give, and him giving back maintains honor and integrity.

That is how I roll. 8)  I am willing to help those that are willing to help themselves.

I swap labor with neighbors all the time that'd be my first thought, if he still insists I'd also say "give me a beer and a sandwhich when we're done, I'm a high maintenance maintenance man you know  :)."

4x4American

I like to swap labor too.  I did some sawing for a friend and he in turn helped me run electric to my garage and wire in some lights.

Headed off in a few min to go take a look at the mill.
