When they went into Crimson & Clover I found myself reaching for my lighter until I realized that I haven't carried one in almost 8 years.

Just saw on the news that Ian Tyson passed away this morning at the age of 89.

Here's a couple of his songs as a small tribute.

Gee I am sorry to read that. My friend Bill Keith played in their band in the later 60's (Great Speckled Bird) and he always spoke of them with fondness. RIP

Old alternative band from 80's NZ. But it was my best friend's all the time favourite song.

He died 2 days ago.

I can't say I have a favorite but him and George would be in my top ten.

Heard sad news today. The legendary singer - songwriter Gordon Lightfoot passed away at 84. I'll have to play the wreck of the Fitz in his memory. May he rest in peace.

Yeah, that was a pretty hard hit to take when I read the news last night. He was a master story teller and writer. Nobody had a better presentation. Here is one of my favorites:

My second favorite Lightfoot song, his beautiful ballad about the building of the railway across Canada. I learned it back in the early 90's, watching a documentary PBS did about the last passenger train across Canada. They used his song as the closing credits theme.

Opened the vault a bit tonight and came across a few from Jeff Healey I haven't heard in many years.  I forgot how well he could make that guitar sing.

Can't mention Jeff Healey without playing his big 1988 hit...
The Jeff Healey Band - Angel Eyes - YouTube
Written by John Hiatt and Fred Koller, "Angel Eyes" was Hiatt's most commercially successful song. There also was a bluegrass version done by "Newgrass Revival", soon after Jeff Healey's "See The Light" album version was released. As noted Healey was a gifted player. Made even more remarkable because he was completely blind, and that he developed his own style of playing the guitar laying flat like a steel guitar.

I saw an interview with him at home, he had a wall of the old 78 rpm blues records and could tell you where each one was. Sadly a great talent gone too soon.

That's a good 'un I had not heard before. Steve used to have a house here in town, next door to a buddy of mine. I would run into him at the food store sometimes when he was in town. He did many local gigs and workshop/music camps. He sold that house, I think about 5 years ago or so. Downsizing, I heard.
