I broke a spring on my old trailer a few weeks ago, and have been handicapped without it. I was beating the bushes looking for mobile home axles, when I ran across a 20' gooseneck 3-axle trailer, advertised for $400. Couldn't resist checking it out, and ended up buying it for $300. ;D  Of course, at that price, it has some problems, but I figger the axles alone to be worth the price. It is made from an old mobile home frame, but seems well put together. The gooseneck may need a bit of beefing up, one axle has a bad spindle, there is no jack on the front-end, the tires are about shot, etc.  I think I got myself into a lot of work, but the outcome should be positive. :)

Considering the thousands that that trailer would cost new, I'd say a little work is worth it.  ;D

Good Show!

What a find! The steel's worth a lot more than that 8)

Well, the LAST thing I needed was another project!  I gotta jam-slam something together, though. At least it gives me some more options, such as putting 2 of those axles under my old trailer for the time being. ???

Definitely came out on top, money-wise. ;D

I don't know what his concern about the axles is.  He's got some under the house that he could use, I'll bet. :D

Buzz-sawyer

Heck, come to think of it, he could use the axles off his kiln :D

The price of new steel is about $1.00 per pound on the local market, so if the trailer is over 300 pounds you could not build just the frame any cheaper.

Fla._Deadheader

Helped someone get their stuff out of their trashed MH today. There are 5 MH's that were dragged onto the side of the road, to be smashed and hauled away. EVERY one had 2 or more axles and wheels under 'em. ;D ;) :)

DanG

Well, you took'em all home, didn't ya Harold? ;D

They don't leave the axles under mobile homes, anymore.  They don't throw them away, either. They take them back to the factory and put them on another one.

If I used the ones under the kiln, how would I move it around? ???  The purpose of building it on a trailer was for portability.

Alas, the camera is TOAST!  The case is warped, apparently from spending too many hot days in the truck. I may have to cash in a few of my spent beer cans to come up with the $300 I need for another one. ::)

It was just over 20 years ago when we bought a brand new mobil home.  They finally brought it out and parked it.  A while later a guy came out to set it up on blocks.   I was there watching.  After a while the guy started to his truck to get some more tools.  I asked him what he was doing.  He had the nerve to tell me he was gonna take the axles and tires out from under it.  I told him to wait just a minute.  I went to my truck and got my shotgun off of the gun rack.  The guy looked kinda surprised, and asked what I was doing.  I told him when I bought the *DanG thing it had axles and tires on it, and when he left it was STILL gonna have axles and tires on it. Pretty much the end of the conversation.  I don't know why but he didn't give me the least bit of trouble. He just loaded up his wrenches and left. I never even had to load the gun. ;D

This is NOT a recommendation to anyone else to try this!

Furby

Yeah I don't get that, they take the axels off, but I'm told they aren't able to reuse them on another mobile home. They sell them for "other" uses, after moveing one mobile home on them.
Bad info???

J_T

Ck if I bought one them things 20 years ago and they just finley brought it I would loaded that gun an went looking for them 19 years an 11mounts ago ??? ;D :D DanG you shocked me I though you bought one them 20 grand jobs . Got spare axels come get em. ;D

Spoke to a fellow one time about the steel cable from his trailer to a ground anchor. He said the bank insisted on it so that the trailer was a permanent fixture and not portable! The wheels may be part of the same idea. Wouldnt want you just up and stealing that 78' house with your old half ton. I figure that the manufacturer just wants to save money by recycling the running gear.

When ya visit the "DanGster" it is very likely you can get lost on all them little dirt trails. Probably someone had that trailer hooked up, and then got lost. Abandoned the thing and then someone else drug it to their place. Along comes "our" lustruss scrap picker-upper, and HE gets a real deal.  ;)

Somebody even lost a whole Military Supply Depot, just down the road from DanG. 22 acres, I bleeve.  ;D :D :D :D
