New to the forum but not new to logging
Had a treefarmer C4, sold it about 20 years ago
Now I want it back.  Glad I sold it though, that was 20 years ago
But it was simple compared to the Clark 664C I just purchased
Anyway, I am having the same problem as some people in the forum
The winch keeps winching in in the hold position
I understand the problem is probably in the clutch pack assembly
But to get this out, does the winch need to be removed?
There is not much room between this assembly and the frame
Your expertise would be appreciated before I start wenching

Is the problem only when its cold out?

I've never seen a clark winch do this and I've had a few. ya sure it a clark winch? I seen gearmatics do this.

Just bought this used 1980 skidder
Am currently in fix up mode
Now I know why they sold it (lots of little things)
Working on exhaust now, thanks to MBRP, (they are local) I am building my own custom performance exhaust
I already have a full time job so not a lot of time to fix
Trying to get it ready to work this winter
Anyway,  it is not that cold yet to answer your question

OK I've had it happen with my JD and Eaton only when real cold tho I was told its just the cold oil being a lot thicker which makes sense, but I haven't been around Clark's a lot tho I have run one a little for a buddy tho good machine except for the breaks in that one

If you look in the upper right corner of your posts, there is a modify button. That allows you to fix your posts when you screw something up or forget a point or two. ;D

I use it frequently. ;D ;D ;D 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) :o

Well
Yesterday I tried to remove the pinion brake on the front of the winch
No way
There is not enough to get a wrench in on the bottom bolts let alone get room to remove the part
The winch al least needs to be disconnected and shifted back or tilted up
Does not look like fun undoing the winch bolts

I had this problem with a clark winch on an a cat skidder  oil had gotten into the clutch pack which is inside the drum.  You take it out from the right side(looking at it from the back of the machine)  Cat has an update to solve the problem. Requires machining.  Open it up and see if it wet in there, should be dry..  I remember the pieces all being heavy but doable alone...

The problem (hopefully) is the pinion brake
got it out, the disc is worn out.
Ordered the part.
Will find out if it is the problem when I get it back together which won't be for a couple weeks
Busy doing other stuff
also had to rebuild the turbo off the Detroit 353
They made a million of these motors, you would think a rebuilder would have no problem finding one,
but no, they are like finding a dinosaur

I had the same problem on my 1977 664B. I put a pressure gauge on line to disc clutch-no pressure, it should have 240-280T.First I had to replace a broken spring in the control valve and torn gasket that was easy because it is easy to get at. But that didn't cure it, I had to rebuild the input shaft clutch pack. I did have to lift the winch off the machine. The parts store said you better check the clutch brake while you have it apart and sure enough that needed to be fixed too. Put it all back together and it works like new. The fellow that mentioned Allied is right on, they have all the manuals to download for free.Good luck.

I'm sure the new pinion brake will fix your problem. I had this exact issue with my Clark 667 last year. The brake disc had been completely worn out, and the piston and ring Had worn away over 1/8 of the housing material , causing oil to completely bypass. I had to weld and rematch ine the housing and machine a new piston for the assembly. Check carefully for wear on these parts. You'll want to make that brake assembly top notch while your in there.

Did you solve your winch problem?
