Title: youtube video URL - http vs. https
Post by: Bibbyman on February 21, 2013, 10:29:45 AM
I found an interesting sawmill video on YouTube I wanted to post.   I copied the URL and pasted it into post.   It didn't display like it should.  Just had URL as text.  It launched and came up on YouTube but wouldn't play.  Something about format.

I went back to the post and noted it started with https instead of http. That seemed to fix it.

The URL was generated by YouTube. Any clues?

Https is the encrypted version of http. Https uses port 443 and http uses port 80.  Servers can be configures to use either or both.

Is this something I need to watch for and correct to http?

Or is it something the Forum can do so either will work?

Originally all youtube as on normal http, but recently they started using the https protocol for better security. The forum software is currently only looking for the http addresses, so it wont automatically embed the https links.

Not sure how hard this is to change, maybe Jeff can have a look and see if it's easy to change in the forum software.

In the meantime, editing the URL and removing the "s" is the fix.
