Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what I'd need/want to get to do some occasionall tree topping around the personal property?

Tree gear for the most part is not cheap.You may find it more economical to hire someone qualified.To have a look at some gear check out Treestuff.com  good prices and excellent service as well as free shipping for larger orders.Tree topping is not a recommended practice,may I suggest you check out the International society of Arborists page it has a lot of great information and explains crown reductions fairly well.   DonT
