Fella brought me a table to refinish, found this ol' boy hidden in the double book match.

It looks pretty neat, but I never have been a fan of veneer work. I have seen too much nice veneer furniture ruined by a little moisture. Most of the time it is just a cold glass that gets em. With solid wood moisture isn't a big concern. We have two solid black walnut tables that I made then finished with poly and we have never used coasters. They still look as good as the day they were finished.
IF,it is veneered,an oil finish will protect it well.

You can't get a double book match without veneering.

In this particular instance, it looks to be very well preserved.
It's hard to explain without my hand gestures. But I will try. Single book match is where you take, say a 3" thick board and saw it in half with a thin kerf bandsaw. When you lay it open like a book, you have a book match. If you were to try to saw the the 1.375" boards again to get the other book match, the grain would be too far off to see the mirror image. And you would have about 5/8" thick tops for your table before machining. Which is close to veneer anyways because you would want to glue in a bunch of braces or mdf etc. to get a double book match that looks that semetrical, it has to be veneer. I have tried to refinish veneer half a dozen times or so, and been successful once. Most of the time I end up sanding down to particle board.
