This is actually my first posting here (just joined). I traded my 10mm 044 today for four Stihl chainsaws. Ms361, 036 pro, 029, and 032. The first 3 run but need minor cosmetics fixed (cracked plastic) and the 032 needs a top end rebuild. Overall I'd say it was very good trade. I'm happy ;)

That sounds like a good trade, although an 044 is a pretty handy saw to have. I have a 361 in my collection and really like it for cutting firewood up.

Welcome to the forum. Not a bad lot you got now, though an 044 is a great saw by all accounts. Still you have some good saws. I love my 361, excellent saw. With a little help breathing better it will really shine. The 036 has a little more displacement at 61.5 cc, similar saw though. Pictures of your new used saws?

There isnt a single one of those saws I would ever trade for a 10mm 044........unless it had some serious issues.

I've got (2) 10mm 044's......theyre priceless to me ;)

Saws built before X29583701 have 10mm pins ;)
But that's not the issue. The OP traded a rare piece of equipment for a clamshell, a metal box with a blown top end and 2 everyday saws.
There was a reason the other party involved in the trade was willing to let (4) saws go in trade for (1) - because he knew what he was getting.
Exactly where is the SN at on an 044? And which is better the 10mm or 12mm?

The Ser# number is stamped on the case whereabouts the exhaust exits the muffler...toward the front of the saw....above the clutch cover.....on the left hand side.
The 10mm saws run better.

Does the plate holding the bar on or the muffler need removed? It seems funny that I have used this for well over 15 years and never looked for a serial number.

Nothing needs to be removed. The numbers are quickly covered in exhaust carbon/residue.

AdkStihl, thanks for the info, my sn is 137529108 so a 12mm. I bought it new but hard to remember what year although it has always treated me well. To the OP, sorry for being "slightly" off subject although we stayed on Stihl saws, post again!
Well you get to "horse trading " sometimes it's a good deal and some times not so good .
That 036 can be turned into a little powerhouse of a light weight .Don't know a thing about a 361 .The 029 is a firewooder .Some swear by them some swear at them .
032 is an old duffer ,they cut though just like any saw .With a blown top though it's basically parts as it is . If the tradee and the trader are happy that's all that matters .
