I went to finish mowing my yard today after getting rained out yesterday. As I went o do  the side yard I noticed a strange brown shape by the chain link fence in my front yard. I first thought it was a clump of weeds or such. Then I wondered if it was a dead rabbit or something.

When I looked closer I found it was a newborn or very young fawn. Why the mom parked him in a wide open spot like my mowed, short grass lawn I do not know. I called my wife and she came and got some pictures then I walked around him and resumed mowing 20-25 yards away. Eventually he got tired of that vicious  animal growling at him and got up and ran off to a quieter area.IMG_4032.JPG

Awesome photo.  My cows will do the same thing, drop a newborn off in the middle of a field in the full sun.  Somehow it works out.

Once when I was pretty young my mom was driving us on the dirt road to the bus stop. I tried telling her to stop because of a fawn in the road and she said it was just a clump of dirt. Well after we went over it, I looked back and the clump of dirt walked into the woods. I still won't let her forget that one.

Otis,

That reminds me of the time as a kid we were driving down a dirt toad and I warned Mom there were guineas in the road and to slow down for them. She said "Guineas are too fast and you can't hit one anyway." Whack! Feathers went everywhere. I thought she was going to be sick.

Actually the only ones I ever ate were served as a meal on an overseas flight. As I remember it would have been hard to tell them from chicken but that may have been the way they were prepared.

Not groundhog/woodchuck. It tastes like a cross between squirrel and raccoon with a little woody flavor like a beaver has. :huh?

To me they are a bit more gamey than chicken, more along the lines of Red Tail Hawk, but not quite as strong as Barn Owl.

SS,

It depends on what they are eating in your area but our RT Hawks have a much sweeter taste that barn owl. In fact it is hard to tell our RT Hawks from a bald eagle except the eagle has much larger portions. :wink_2:

We prefer our Eagle young, more of a McNugget sort of thing, getting them out of the nest can be tricky, but deep fried in Rhino lard and it becomes well worth it.

At aged 5 or so, we was coming home across a dirt cross road with mom driving the truck. This road was more like a farm road, has a couple 90 degree elbows. At the first elbow was a black bear, which stood up and looked to be 8 feet tall. Eyes in the truck went wide open as my brother and I stood up on the bench seat for a good look at the black monster.  ffcheesy ffcheesy

He is back with his mom this time.

This is about 60 yards from my LR window about 7:30 pm.

The ground is a spring run off and is torn up from me dragging logs and tops from a big dead ash tree I cut last week for firewood. The doe was feeding on young multi-flora roses (I hope she eats them all) and stickweed (Asters) that are tender this time of year.

I need to bushhog the area I can reach but have been waiting for the fawns to get older so they know to run from the equipment.

They are back in the exact same spot now. The mom let him nurse a while and his little tail was spinning like a windmill as she cleaned him. When he got nearly done he punched a few times them started stomping the ground with his front foot like an old doe who has busted a hunter. Then he made several mad dashes back and forth into the weeds and then across the pasture. The old doe is trying to be patient with him but he is a handful

I wish my 5 & 7 y/o grandkids were here to watch his antics. The 12 GD is here and watched a while but she lives here in WV and is used to seeing such sights. The younger ones are city kids from Charlotte and these kind of this are still exciting for them.

We are sure enjoying watching them.

Haven't seen any this year, since we have such few deer to work with.

Then there were 2 of them. I thought they were twins and both did nurse off the same doe but later on they split and one went to the right with one doe and the other to the left with the other doe.

These came down within 4' of the corner of my yard fence.

I love watching pairs or groups of fawns playing as they seem so excited and enjoy life to the fullest.
