I have a stihl 026 with 3/8 .050 chain. I feel it is a little under powered for that chain but I have 15 or so chains and I would hate to just throw them away. I just bought a 3/8 .050 low profile bar and chain combo. My question is can I run the 3/8 .050 standard chains on the new bar, and will the low profile be easier on the small saw? Should I just bite the bullet and switch to a .325 bar and chain?

Standard 3/8 and the lo-pro 3/8 are not interchangable. You may think that they look like they are but they are not. Of course theyre will always be one person who invariably will come along and proclaim that they were able to make it work for a little while but they are not interchangable.

For what kinds of cutting or sizes of saws is it better to use 3/8 low-profile, or .325 pitch?

I've used both regular 3/8 chisel, and .325 chisel and semi-chisel on a regular basis. I've only used 3/8 low-profile a few times (and two of those were the safety chains on under-powered "big box store" chainsaws)... so I don't really have anything good to compare.

The 3/8 lo pro is for top handle arborist saws mostly, as well as saws below about 40cc displacement. .325 is best suited for smaller rear handle saws between approximately 40 and 55cc displacement. Anything 60cc and up can pull regular 3/8 just fine.

Thanks, Rocky. I got a used Husky 357XP that had a 3/8 low pro chain on it. It didn't make a lot of sense to me, and on the advice of several here, I switched it to regular 3/8 chisel -- which has been a great combination.

I've got several saws both bigger and smaller, the 026 is what I use to cut fence posts and carry while bush hogging. I think I am going to just stick with the 3/8, since thats what I have, all I need is a new bar. I already returned the low profile because I thought it was a regular 3/8 when I bought it.
