I made this bench for my Mom for Mothers Day

  Thanks guys, I think this is just regular old red oak..the kind that grows in South Carolina.  I got the log from the tree service and sawed it up a couple years ago.
It's been under the shed air drying since.  We've had some unusually warm and dry air here this spring, and when I checked the moisture content, it read 10 percent.  It was a pleasant surprise, because I have no kiln, and the air dryed wood usually doesn't get much lower than 14 percent here.

  This is also the first bench/project that I made with full mortise and tenon joinery.  The legs are also splayed, and all the joinery is "angled".  It took me a full day's work to figure it out, and it's not quite perfect.  I cannot believe how much stronger/sturdier the mortise and tenons are over just screws and glue...the work involved gives me a new respect for you guys that build everything "traditionally"!
