Title: Full time sawyer now
Post by: tazz on July 25, 2012, 09:17:23 AM
Well, I did it. I finally got up the nerve to quit my job and go full time for myself. I get enough onsite sawing jobs to replace my income. I would like to eventually be able to work from my back yard. Any advice some of you older more expierenced sawyers could give me would be great.

Gday

Congrats and Welcome to the Club  ;) ;D ;D 8) Are you still using the Norwood or did you get the lt40 Mate  ??? As Lyle said heads down azz up  :D But you still have to keep an eye on the prize and also open to new business opps when they come up  ;) Now going from custom sawing to contract sawing at a static mill isnt a hard step if most of your works close by I would be aiming on getting yourself into a crane truck if you dont have one yet ? as you can make the same sort of money by being able to go out and pickup logs for custom jobs and drop the timber of on your way to get more logs  ;) I know there will be the ones who will say portables they way to go but you can go out and pick up logs from 1,23, or more jobs and do things in a more productive manner with a fixed mill in a shed  ;) Thats all Ill add for now ohh if you want to do low grade hardwood and have access to the logs I can put you intouch with a couple of people in AL that are buying pallet in pretty large volumes and they dont mind shipping as they buy for a 7 state radius from Mobile Al just send me a pm  ;)

Good Luck and you will never regret it if you work Hard n Smart Mate   ;) ;D ;D 8)

Regards Chris

Good luck. Keep your overhead to a min. and all else will fall in place.

I sold the Norwood and went with a Timberking 1600. 8) It seems to do well for me and has really increased my production. I will never be without hydraulics again.

Since I went full time I work half as hard and still don't have any money, actually it's getting better every year.   Syeve

Low overhead and don't get into a price war with the other mills
Saw fair and charge what the market will bear and kill them with service,

Best to you Tazz
