This reminds me of my uncle and a neighbor who where going to brush out power lines. They used chainsaws. After 3 weeks of that, they was glad it was over and never wanted anything to do with it again. It would have been way easier running a clearing saw on the job. Standing up like a man, not bend over like a monkey all day.  ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy

Most of us that have responded started with a CSM. I blew my farm boss and bought another, didn't learn very quickly, only needed a few flattened logs for the cabin build. I was on my hands and knees pushing that CSM through the log and thinking... am I nuts!!!!.
I bought an old BSM fixed it up and sawed all the wood I needed in a couple of hours.
I tell everyone that wants a mill, hire me for what you will pay for a CSM or Small BSM and I will saw you enough wood in a day to last you quite a few years, if not the rest of your life. And I even let them run the mill and off load boards for the whole experience.

That's exactly what I did!
It's still up there.

I keep wanting to do a YouTube video using it, but when my favorite chainsaw hears me talking about it, it runs off and hides! ffcheesy ffcheesy

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

I bet if you were to ask around in here you could get a good deal on a used CSM. None of us are using them. ffcheesy

I traded my CSM for 20 sheets of 16' standing seam  roofing.  I don't miss it.

I'd follow suit on that deal: could always use more metal roofing to cover lumber piles.

Quote from: barbender on March 02, 2025, 11:53:35 PMI've never ran a chainsaw mill. I will say this- I spent the day yesterday hand limbing and bucking, and a bit of hand falling. It was a short day, about 6 hours. Because that's all I could handle🤦 It's been a long time since I've done much of that work, and it kicked my butt. I can't imagine how I'd feel after 6 hours of chainsaw milling😬
Quote from: Nebraska on March 01, 2025, 09:01:18 PMI started the saw milling bug with a beam machine. Then a chainsaw mill, next a manual mill. I'm on basic hydraulics now. Some day setworks and a board drag back.

Beware it's a slippery slope.

Yes it is I do have a ? Goes anyone have some mods on a timber King 1600 mainly the the log dog and the log stops

I bought one that clamped on my bar and used a 2x4 for a guide .It was about $35 .
I cut up 2 16" poplars with it. Never again I bought a cheap band saw mill with a  winch log loader . I'll give the clamp gizmo to the next for fool that wants to kill himself

I never did try a chainsaw mill. The closest I came was using a chainsaw to rip logs in half for sill logs, and other flattening chores on a log building. They work well for that, but I'd never want to saw 1x6's that way😬

I remember getting a companies promotional video for their chainsaw mill. Watching the video, the operator came out, he was all amped up and said, "let's mill some lumber!!" Then he proceeded to fire up the saw, and start cutting. The video jumped ahead 3 times before he got to the end of the log🤦 I figured if it was so slow that they had to cut the tape in a promotional video, I probably wouldn't have the patience for it.
Too many irons in the fire

I used a chainsaw alone to square up a spruce cant that was 16" on the small end and about 16' long. That's a good work out. :D And square is not square like on a band mill. I saved the cant to true up later on real mill.   If I was ambitious, I had one just as big I could have chain sawed a couple years ago. But I'm not that ambitious again.  ffcheesy ffcheesy  Hate to see is just rot, but I really don't have a use for it. Rotting is just a natural process.  :wink_2:  If you are going to run a mill you need handling equipment to. I don't intend to man handle no logs, period. For me it would be an expensive hobby I don't need to get into. ffcheesy
