Title: weight loss contest/support
Post by: doc henderson on January 26, 2020, 10:53:01 AM
Hey guys and gals.  I have been thinking about this for a while.  I need to loose some weight.  it is talked about a fair amount on the forum.  Many of us are very active outdoors, and we all like to eat.  At work the staff started a contest.  they all put in 25 bucks and at the end, the team with the highest % weight loss gets a thousand dollars.  Not suggesting we put money in, but could start a thread with ideas of what is working, and not.  both exercise and food moderation.  I was inspired by @Bruno of NH (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=26349) .  despite all my threads and how much I do say, I often bite my tongue.  I got down to 160 after Philmont in 2016.  I am back up to my natural weight of 190. (the weight I get to if I am not trying to loose weight).  lots of stuff out there.  I know a lot about the older ones, Adkins as an example.  There are some doctor monitored ones.  Many of us are at that age with diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol make up a good portion of our Medical appointments and medications.  I am fortunate to not need meds for now, but my Mom and Grandma had high blood pressure, DM, and cholesterol issues.  If it helps anyone to talk with others, or if you have questions, or want the group to help you stay on track, thought we could give this a try.  A dietician at K-state did a study and lost 30 pounds eating Twinkies in moderations.  It gets complicated if you already have medical problems and it is not my desire to practice medicine on line.  My goal is to loose 30 pounds to feel better, stave off disease,  make it easier on my knees.  I will use Atkins type of food goals.  Keto is similar but uses stick to achieve ketosis.  Also some walking and or weight lifting can be helpful.  just like a bank account, your balance (weight) is based on deposits and withdrawals.  sounds like @Bruno of NH (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=26349)  has a jump on all of us.  Type 2 diabetics can sometimes go off meds after weight loss.  I am setting a goal of about 15%.  I used to be able to do Atkins and loos 5 to 10 pounds in 2 weeks.  now it is harder.  good luck.

I'm all in Doc
I'm doing this with a group of friends that I do the Sports radio program with.
It helps a lot and is fun.
Maybe we could do a box of bands, log rite tool or some thing like that as a prize.
The inches I lost in 2 weeks makes such a difference in how I feel.
I'm doing low carb with a protein shake once or twice a day.
I'm not hungry.

And eating chicken and fish
Not my 2 favorite things but
I'm getting used to it.
My A1c has gone down also.

great job!  I used to tell my diabetics not to do Low carb (25 years ago) due to protein being tough on kidney function.  but the overall metabolic problems are helped with low carb and type 2 dm.  less sugar makes sense.  I will go into some medical rational later.

Doc
I gave up sweet treats and sugar after my PE when they also told me I needed insulin.
It's the other stuff like bread and pasta.
I'm finding you need to drink lots of water.

I like veggies but mostly fresh stuff.
In New Hampshire the winters make it tough to get good veggies.
Certain veggies are good and berries.
I'm drinking almond milk and eating unsalted almonds.
The almonds fill you up.

Years ago at work we did a weight loss thing two or three times - in the Spring, IIRC.  It went something like this:

First weigh in was your base weight and put in $10.  Each week weigh again and pay $1 if your weight went up.  I don't think it was per pound, just that you went up.  The goal was a steady drop, not a big drop and little gains.  We did this for about 3 months.  Highest % won the pot.

For me, walking does good as well as eating (much) less.  I just like food too much.  I have to stay away from ice cream and eat frozen bananas instead.

Doc, you didn't say how tall you are for the 160/190 pounds.  I'm 5-11.  In my younger days working on the ranch I was 165-175.  I look scary skinny in the pictures (compared to now!) ;)  When I get down to 195 I feel great.  I'm 206 right now.  Working on my cabin in the summer I get down to the 195.  My "goal" has been 185 but the closest I ever got was 190 and I have to wear a belt so my 33" and 34" jeans don't to fall off.  But, working hard at the cabin, I loose the fluffy fat and gain dense muscles.  My weight doesn't fall far but I loose inches and look better at 195.

I'm in! All these years if sitting long hours in a machine, and loving to eat, are catching up with me. I'm 6'5", and just hit 300 pounds. I told myself prior that this was my limit where I have to take action.

well I am 5'8" or at least I was.  In high school I did 3 sports a year and was in about 9 clubs and always had a part time job.  in college when tested I was at 3% body fat, I was at 135#, could do 100 push-ups, and then repeat in an hour if challenged,  so that was easy.  it gets harder as we get older.  Anabolic steroids are plentiful at younger ages.  think testosterone.  It makes my wife mad that she can run a marathon, and I have a poochy tummy and still have a lower body fat content then her.  Human growth hormone regulates anabolic steroids.  think of a teenage boy.  eats all they want and more, have all kinds of muscle and energy.  lots of HGH.  after we are grown it is normal to decrease, but we still need some.  this is where a good nights sleep comes in.  HGH releasing substance is release in REM sleep.  the test for this is 2 postage stamps stuck on your privates.  if they are torn in half on the perforation in the morning, you know that you had a release of HGH releasing substance and a burst of HGH and testosterone.  "morning thickness".  We just need a little in our systems as we are older.  this is why weight gain and diabetes can become a cycle.  The hormone that balances HGH is insulin.  It has the opposite effects.  Insulin helps to move sugar into the cells for metabolism, and if there is more than we need, we store it as fat.  It makes us want to sleep and eat.  think siesta.  having a high insulin level is the same as a low HGH/testosterone level.  Type 2 diabetics have insulin resistance, and therefore have to produce many times more insulin to move sugar in the cell.  you want to eat and sleep.  remember that complex carbohydrates (starches) are sugars hooked together.  takes longer to breakdown but the same as sugar.  so you want to be sedentary and eat more, you gain weight, and now you become more insulin resistant, now you snore when you sleep, and never get REM sleep.  since your sleep apnea wakes you up just as you get into deep sleep and stop breathing.  no HGH releasing substance.  all these things add up to metabolic syndromes with cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes, all leading to vascular disease like stroke and heart attack.  there is a family predisposition to insulin resistance.  goes up with age and weight gain.  More kids now with type 2 DM in their teens.  exercise can help, but hard to do if you are overweight, tired, and with other health issues.  DM is a blood sugar over 126 fasting on 2 occasions.  type 1 makes no insulin.  type 2 makes tons of insulin but the cellular receptors are resistant.  so takes more insulin to move sugar in the cell, until the pancreas cannot keep up, and then blood sugar goes up.  this is why you can be pre-diabetic for years with high insulin levels but not have high blood sugars.  if you were a gestational diabetic (girls) you will likely be a type 2 diabetic,

drinking lots of water is good.  keeps you full, and protects the kidney from all the nitrogen liberated from the excess protein and therefore amino acids in the high protein diets.

Hey Doc, in my former life I would join you on the weight loss thing but since about 4 years ago when I was originally diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and after much research, I went on the Ketogenic diet and have been on it now for 4 straight years.  Benefits are that I lost all the weight I can stand to lose (roughly 40 pounds) and my diabetes was completely cured.  All my blood tests are better than they were 40 years ago.  Other benefits are all the steaks you can eat and other "fattening" things like butter.  I make my own zero carb ice cream so can still have something sweet.

Don't get me wrong, the Ketogenic diet is a lifestyle change and not just a diet.  It is hard for a lot of people to stay on it because it limits what you can eat.  My diet consists of 60% fat, 5% or less carbs, and the balance is proteins.  There are days I would kill for a donut or a hand full of M & M's but I've learned to accept the benefits and ignore what is unhealthy for me.

I am rooting for you on losing the weight you want to lose.

Well I admire you guys for jumping in to make personal improvements. I too have not been happy with some of the ways I take care of myself. But I don't think weight is one problem I have. I weigh 183, and am 6' 1". My weight only varies these days a pound or two either way. It used to swing to 10 pounds heavier in the winter, then loose it in the spring because I sat on my butt all winter. At any rate, back in 1976 I suffered a spontaneous pnuemothorax and the Doc said I should keep an extra 10 pounds on my frame for the rest of my life to reduce the chance of a re-occurrence.  This has worked so far. I am not sure what I SHOULD weigh right now, all those BMI charts are pretty much way off, because they are based on a 21 year old or something, few are adjusted for age accurately. At any rate, they say I am overweight or even obese, and if you look at me you will laugh. If I don't wear a belt, my britches fall off. I can barely grab a hunk of my belly when I am sitting down. "But the chart says......."
My wife feeds me good food with a mix of everything. I only have fast food a few times a year. No sweet tooth to speak of (a box of cookies lasts a month or more). But it would be good for my body if I could cut back on the beer and cigarettes. I just don't know how those around me would fare, especially those at work. ;D When I retire, this is one of the first orders of business after I loose all that stress from my life.
I wish you guys the best of luck, and I will be cheering for you. Grabbing hold of something and just 'going for it' even though you know the pains and pitfalls takes courage and commitment. I know a little about that, but anybody that had me on their team would gain nothing by my presence.

Doc, I'd join you, but in May of '18 the scales showed my 5'8.5" tubby self @220lbs.  75 years old then and was on Metformin for high blood sugar, felt tired and listless with no energy.  I said enough, life is too good to let myself turn into a couch potato blob. Went on Keto, got a macro counter app for my phone, looked at lots of YouTube videos and researched keto recipes, started working out with an elliptical and barbells. Lost 45 pounds in six months and have maintained that weight. No longer on Metformin and my blood panel looks great.

Key elements for me were to use the macro app, set a calorie per day goal and determine the right levels of fats, proteins and carbohydrates... record what you eat.  Limit carbs to 20 or less per day.  Start your day with bulletproof coffee.  It will keep you from feeling hungry.  Buy MCT oil and add that to your coffee (start with teaspoon amounts, because it can cause gastro distress (disaster pants) until you get used to it.  It will give you an energy boost.  Look into intermittent fasting... it works. You take all your daily food/calories in a six hour period of your choosing.  I choose noon to six, so no food from six pm to noon the next day.  Lots of info on this diet on the web. Look here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIma2WOQs1Mz2AuOt6wRSUw), and here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC70SrI3VkT1MXALRtf0pcHg).to start and beware the folks trying to monetize the Keto craze.

sounds good Jeff.  I think many of us would feel better at a lower weight.  i like that some folks with success have chimed in.  i have no preconceived ideas for this, other than to derive ideas, info, and poss. motivation from our friends.  i used to dream that Marie Osmond would come to my house.  Oh well we are all getting older.  even if someone tries, eats better, and maintains there weight instead of gaining, that is good.  i do not know about the new go low.  i know some can do keto and some cannot.  basically all the low carb. diets work the same way, just a different ways to monitor.  Adkins likes less than 20 grams of carbs per day to induce for a few weeks then 50 grams after that.  many hospitals have dietitians who will speak with you.  there are lots of books on calories and carbs ect.  just keeping track can help.  you may figure out that a lot of calories come from food or drink that you could take or leave.  My friend Renee (now an oncologist)  lost 30 pounds when her daughter Alex was dx. with type one diabetes at age 4.  she started weighing portions, and knowing calories.  I think the stress helped too.  many diets recommend modifying alcohol and caffeine.  i am a big everything in moderation guy.  I think the diets that offer pre-made food are great if you do not like to prepare meals and help with portion control.  but cost a bit. lets see how it goes.  my wife likes crunchy snack stuff and con only do low carb for about 4 days.  i think meat and veggies is a meal and can eat it all day long.  eggs and bacon in the am.  light lunch.  good supper.  the intermittent fasting is fine, if you do not overeat after a fast.  drink lots of water.

so i get up every morning, go potty  and then step on the scale.  some do not like to weigh every day, but i use it to keep me honest.  in nature we all tend to gain a few pounds a year.  does not matter if your scale matches your doctors, as long as it is consistent, it is all relative.

I tried to post last night don't know what happened but it didn't. I didn't mean to sound like I didn't want to be part of the group its just I don't have much to offer. Its not hard for me to lose weight just have to watch what I eat and stay as active as possible I did switch from sugar on my oatmeal to stevia you can use it 1 for 1. the hardest is sweet rolls at coffee time. We have a two story house and I make many trips up and down the stairs every day and also walk at a fast pace I have always liked walking fast so there is some of the ways I take off the pounds. I guess I was trying to say, that the success and tricks people use might be helpful to others.  congratulations on your good heath.  @randy d (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=40730) fear of failure is what keeps people from trying. knowing it can be done and having a strategy is part of the success.  did you know that 5% is the natural rate at which people quit smoking.  but with Dr. and or other support and a plan, it goes to over 50%.  we all have our habits, and in stress some smoke, drink, or eat as an emotional soother/crutch.  In residency we got free food and the only excuse you had to take  a break, was "I am eating right now, and will be there in half an hour" (routine emergencies).  more food meant a longer dinner break.  food filled the void left from no sleep in 36 hours.  I got away with it when younger, now not so much.  thanks for sharing how you do it!  has anyone tried hypnosis?  I know people who quit smoking and got off narcotic for pain with this?  There are weight loss drugs but lots of side effects and you have to change you behavior to keep a healthy weight.

The biggest thing? I was drinking 3 or 4 bottles of coke a day. Have been for a long time. That alone is 720 calories a day. I was also drinking a couple glasses of milk a day. Im drinking mostly coffee in the morning now and water the rest of the day. Cut out the snack grazing during the day of untold amounts of calories. Trying to not eat after supper as well.

I back slid a bit.  I was up all day yesterday, but we had friends come to visit.  we went out to eat and had Chinese, only had a little rice, but the noodles hit the spot.  then one of my docs, had back issues and I ended up working all night, had a salad and meatballs.  so ate another meal, that I do usually at 01;30 am when up all night.  so wt. up a little for now.  overall doing ok and so it should average out.  this is why I weigh everyday.

I'm trying a first. I wanted something for the superbowl, and I saw Tammy had a head of cauliflower in the fridge, so I stole it to try and roast. Im going to use black pepper sea salt and some paprika in a mix of 2tbs of olive oil and butter to pan roast it. Never had it roasted before, only dipped in high caloric dips. I'll take some pics and put it in the food section when done. One way or the udder. :)

that looks good @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1) . the Chiefs won!  I ended up working again instead of super bowl partying. We will have to try that with our Vegghetti.   :) I slept until 18:30 and when I got up again my weight was back down to 186, so average is still good. Keep it up @Bruno of NH (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=26349)   I hope this begins to impact some of your other ailments.

@doc
I am in
I am 6'5 and 260 lbs and i started gaining after a spreader tire tried taking my arm off in 2004.but the doc at Albany med were able to put it back together.
Being a dairy farmer milk and dairy products have been a challenge to ween off of .I also make beer and hard cider so that is the next challenge for me .
The doc told me last week that I need a knee replacement. My dad has both of his replaced for the first time when he was 74 and he is on his second set now at 92 .

@A-z farmer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=42480) it is a small world.  no I did not almost have my arm taken off, but I was at Albany Medical Center from 1990 to 1994 getting my internal medicine and pediatric dual specialty.  who was the surgeon?  if you recall.  how is the arm?  Your weight for your ht. does not look too bad, but you know if it makes it hard to breath when you bend over to tie your shoes.  I loved that part of the country and still have great friends and some family in that area.  I used to go sailing on lake George in the summer when I was off work, and had a GF in Kingsbury.  good time..  thanks for jumping in.  let me know if there is anything I can offer that may help you with your goals.  lots of people here that have achieved their goals and offer good ideas.  and @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1)  is trying out lots of good low carb/calorie ideas.  Best regards!

for everyone who would like to spend more and work less.  that works great with weight loss and good health.  not so much with the finances.  if you can eat less calories and or spend more with activity, that is great.  I thought it was dumb to spend money on a gym, that I earned at my job with little activity, so I could exercise to burn of the extra calories I ate.  I like to run the mill and split and buck firewood instead.  If you did that 8 hours a day, you might have trouble eating enough calories.  that was how I grew up, and always walked away from the table more than full.  Since I have a family predisposition to metabolic syndrome, I am doing low carb.  I would like to supplement my activity with either calisthenics or light weight lifting that can be done inside.  remember Jack LeLanne? sp. taz-smiley smiley_bouncing_pinky

@doc
It was doctor John Czajka
He grew up just south of us and his dad was a farmer. When he had me on the table I told him that he and his brother were not smart enough to be a farmer so one of them became a surgeon and the other a lawyer .In hindsight I did not think it through ,and I could not run from my remark .And two years ago I got to have his son Doctor Cory Czajka fix my Same arm after falling backwards on snow covered ice .Two great surgeons putting the pieces back together one person at a time .

So I heard on sporting chef this week end from C DUB that you can grind up fried pig skins in the blender and use them like panko bread crumbs sounded like a good way to have a 0 carb breading. Have any of you tried this?  Randy

I have not, but I am sure @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1)   will be having it for supper now! :D neat idea for those that like breading.  do you use real fresh pig skin, of the pig skins fried and in the bag?  @randy d (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=40730)   Looks like the fried in the bag, so it can be already spiced!

I don't know what's going on here but..... I read this thread everyday and enjoying everyone's progress and suggestions. My weight is always 183 give or take 1 pound. I check it every day or two on a scale we have at work. It's always the same. Last Thursday I dropped to 180 for the first time in over a year. Today I checked it and I am now 179.
I know this forum has had a big influence on me in the past 2 years, but this seems a little bit much. How did you guys do that?

Here are some recipes I found helpful doing keto. Whenever I get the craving for mashed potatoes I steam up some cauliflower and make this (https://cafedelites.com/mashed-cauliflower/) tasty substitute.  For those of you who enjoy waffles for breakfast, give chaffles (https://www.midgetmomma.com/the-best-easy-keto-chaffle-recipe/) a try. We like the cinnamon ones with some sugar free maple syrup, but the plain ones also make good burger buns. No affiliation with these recipe sites.  Just say no to all the requests and go straight to the recipes.

Also, if you get the craving for pizza.  Check out fathead (https://www.wholesomeyum.com/recipes/fathead-pizza-crust-low-carb-keto-gluten-free-nut-free/) pizza.  It actually tastes pretty darn good.

I'm down 26 lbs. I don't eat breakfast any longer. I put 16 hours in-between supper and 'breakfast'. At 2ish i eat a half bowl of honey o's with blue berries. Then about 5 I have a small snack. Usually great value brand kettle cooked Burnin' Hot chips. Then for supper (usually at about 8 pm) I grab a small plate (kid's size sq plate) and usually only eat half a plate or if soup/stew, then half a bowl. The bowls are square bowls, not small, but not huge either. I'm also on 600 mg of Lyrica, which usually causes people to gain weight. I was up to 189 lbs. Now down to 163 lbs. Headed to 150 lbs hopefully. I'm 5' 8". Graduated @ 145 lbs 35 years ago.

Saturdays I do eat breakfast, as we usually eat a big family style breakfast. I also splurge on Saturday night usually and have a root beer float, but then skip supper entirely. I usually eat a bowl of popcorn twice a week for supper also. It's one of those microwave poppers with the special concentrator in the popper. 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and some butter buds for flavoring.

At first it was kinda hard, but after the first few days it's easy now. I do feel a little hungry some mornings, but not always and I just ignore it. I do though drink Zevia Cherry cola with caffeine as a pick me up in the mornings, Usually 2 cans. Don't like coffee.

anywho, you can all do it also. Just have to go with smaller serving sizes. Don't eat for a 16 hour spread.

@Sedgehammer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=43840) you have lofty goals.  not sure of your frame type.  150 sounds low and it is usually hard to get back to high school grad weight.  if you keep loosing and start not feeling as good, that may be a clue.  you can have a dietitian measure your % body fat using a triceps caliper. 3% is Olympic athlete range.  i am currently at 19% 5'8" and 59 years old. 190# to start.  down about 4# now.

I reached a new weight decade today. That's  what I call when you drop in to the next 10 lb increment. I weighed 289.5 this morning. Saying bye to the 90s and back to the 80s!  I can't wait for the 70s, then the 60s the party decades!

Last night i made one of my specialties. Chicken and sweet onion pizza, with shrooms and black olives. I love this meal and always over eat when I make it, as My recipe builds two pizzas.

I ate just one slice. We are going to vacuum pack the remaining slices for future consumption.

Im using an app to record food intake, which is kind of fun.  Yesterday I ate an egg, english muffin and sausage sandwich for breakfast.  An apple for morning snack, a hamburger and bun with tomato and lettuce  for lunch, an orange for an afternoon snack, then I was planning on the pizza for an over indulgence day  since i planned on having one occasionally.  The contents of the pizza really isnt bad, but as I said, i usually eat too much. I was completely satisfied with one slice. I also pretended I had already eaten 2 and told myself that 3rd slice was the indulgence. Psych job! :)

I meant to add, that my target for the day is 1800 calories. With all I ate i was still under 1400.

This is todays breakfast. I cook the egg in an egg poacher, in the microwave. The sausage are pre-cooked from walmart and the muffin is a thompson nooks and crannies muffin. I added two slices of jalapeno and some mustard to the egg. No butter. No cheese. Its good! 280 calories.

We got tired of all the fat in the pan from frying breakfast sausage so we started making our own here is the recipe that we like you can make it hotter if you need more heat. 2# pork butt 2tsp kosher salt 1 1/2ground black pepper 1tsp finely chopped dried sage leaves 1tspdried thyme leaves 1tsp rosemary leaves 1Tbls light brown sugar 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 1/2tsp cayenne flakes 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes mix all seasoning in 5ozs cold water pour on diced pork and mix well and grind . if there is excess liquid pour on meat and mix in put in the frig and let sit over night and enjoy. We try for about 30- 70 fat to lean pork.  Hope you enjoy this as much as we have. Randy

Doing what you are doing and accomplishing what you are accomplishing is a better way to kick his ass....metaphorically anyway.
Don't get hung up on labels. The medical community has charts that dictate where the lines lay and that is what the doctors use. They are finding over time, that a lot of these charts are not exactly correct because they don't allow for race, heritage, age, and many other variables. My Doc once told me I was borderline hypertensive and I should take meds. I am not allowed to write here what I told him ;D, but I made some very minor changes and fixed the problem myself. (No offence to any of the fine Doc's here, I believe it is an industry thing and a product of the assembly line medicine that the insurance bean counters are trying to create.)
Keep at it Jeff! You are kicking ass. 8)

I do not actually get to see a dr. I'm not sure what he is, but like a nurse practitioner. He works under a dr. My first visit to him will be 4 weeks ago this Monday, the day I will have my follow up visit.  The first visit my pb was 157 over 95. It was even higher than that the night they hauled me to the ER at Christmas. He said he was going to put me on BP pills, I said I can lose weight, he gave me, what I would call a look of "yea, right, sure you will", and told me if I wasn't willing to start with lowering the bp with the medicine, I was not going to be his patient. So, Tammy was there and I was a good boy.  I want to be able to walk into that office this coming Monday morning and get on those scales and show him I lost twenty lbs. Then, if my BP is normal, we can at least have a conversation about the meds. I hate meds!!!!!!!   Which reminds me, I gotta go take those pills this morning. ARGH

great job!  that is great regardless of what your PA calls you.  Yes the group of medical students in my class were as diverse (personality) as my high school class.  sometimes the "qualities"  you posses to help you get strait As in school, are not helpful when it comes to talking with people.  we used to expect that no patient would ever see our charting. if they did they could not have read it anyway.  now we have scribes to fill in the blanks on a computer template, and now you can read it, but it ends up being 8 pages of nothing.  It is a life change and very motivational to see all the success you are having.

Jeff, great job on losing weight!  I know it is challenging but 30 pounds is a lot.  Keep persevering and maintain the self discipline, and you can tell your doc "I told you so" when you reach your goal.  You will find your medical markers and indicators will come down to a level that you haven't seen for 30 or 40 years.  Keep up the good work.  You have people rooting for you to succeed.

So how's bout something for those of us who would actually like to gain a little poundage?  At just 5'9" and 140 lbs, all of which is bone, muscle or sinew, I work out in a variety of ways including weights, yoga bits, bits of Pilates, crossfit stuff etc.  I just throw a lot of challenges at my body on a chronic basis, all to keep in shape.  I never put on any weight, regardless of calorie consumption, and maintained a reasonably athletic build right up to the point I'm at now-just under 64 years old.  But I do wish I could pack on more muscle mass.  As I said, I'm all muscle but it is hard to get more bulked up at this age.  I could not be more "toned" but that is not my only goal.  I do wish I could get bigger but doubt it will happen.  My gut is already basically a 6-pack.

One thing I have done is major life hacks involving stairways.  You can really burn your body using stairways.  I do a variety of things-go up backwards...go down with eyes closed...go up 2 steps at a time but with chest proud so that each step is basically a squat....go up singly but on tippy-toes-this will burn, run up 2 at a time for power training, as opposed to strength-many things can be done with steps.  My office is on the 5th floor of a large commercial building such that each "floor" is really 30-some steps.  It would be like a ten-story house.  I'm never in the elevator.  Besides, that thing is full of germs.  I also spend large amounts of time in the field, and that is all walking.

Some of us are already bone machines, but we could use help in not getting too thin!  Congrats to all on the other end of this spectrum!

It's called 'T' and 'HGH'. not saying to take them, but there are doctors that will prescribe them. They don't claim to make you live longer, but that you'll have a better quality of life as you age. I battle with low 'T' at times, have taken 't' shots a few different times. They do give you more energy and better 'felling' body. I can't say what they would do long term, as I didn't use them long term. With all my other health issues from my accident, having more strength and energy to not do much of anything, doesn't matter much now.

so testosterone does make you feel good.   a feeling of well being on one end of the spectrum and invincible on the other.  think of teenagers.  not always good.  sex drive...think of teenagers.  both human growth hormone and testosterone are essentially anabolic steroids.  Most doctors only prescribe after a diagnosis of deficiency.  I had given a few doses of HGH in my career.  they are controlled substances under your DEA license.  If you prescribe too much and not for the right reasons, you can loose your license.  Lots of regulation.  think Lance Armstrong.  If you are female and want to be male, testosterone can be prescribed.  Women have T as well, but it is overridden by estrogen.  think crying at movies.  As we age our testosterone goes down.  think of older men crying at movies.  It can be prescribed for post menopausal women for lack of sex drive.  your own body releases HGH releasing substance during sleep.  and you release HGH.  and that helps with other things like T.  remember the two stamp test for HGH axis.  put two postage stamps still attached on the mans private are and see if they are torn in half in the morning.  If the government only knew. ;)  Remember insulin is a counter regulatory hormone to HGH.  so you can effectively raise the effective HGH effect by lowering insulin levels.  can you say "low carb diet".  also HGH releasing substance is secreted in REM sleep.  so if you are diabetic or prediabetic. overweight so higher insulin levels, and sleep apnea and therefor no deep sleep.  the Dr. test for HGH is to give you a shot of insulin to induce hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and check a before and after HGH level.  if it goes up then your system is working ok.  and you would not qualify for HGH therapy.  It would cost about a thousand bucks a month (priced years ago) and no insurance will pay for it.  It is used in kids with growth failure but is also highly regulated so parents who have a kid who will be 5'10" wont try to get it so the kid ends up over 6 feet.  If you look at the speeches of the president and other agencies, most leaders are the tallest people in the room.  there has not been a president under 6 feet (last I knew)

so Wisconsin, you a training a runners body.  you are burning more calories than you consume, and developing muscles of endurance, not strength.  to build muscle you need to eat muscle.  the meat we eat is broken down to amino acids.  they get reassembled on you body as muscle and other things like dna ect.  you also must provide a signal to the body that you need more muscle (weight lifting).  you then need to make sure that you get enough overall calories or you body will break down your muscle for energy (starvation).  if you remove the nitrogen from an amino acid, you have a sugar.  there is no storage form of amino acids in the body other than to build things like muscle.  sugar is stored as fat.  so low carb and or decreased calorie diets burn the fat.  the nitrogen removed from the AA is a waste product converted to urea and ammonia, put out in the urine as nitrogenous waste.  this is why you need to drink water so high protein does not harm your kidneys. so if you want to bulk up, eat plenty of protein, eat more calories and or stop doing aerobic training.  you are turning all your muscle to sugar since your calorie output out paces you calorie intake.  Saaweeeet!

the metabolic syndrome is a term for the perfect storm of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, sleep apnea.  you now see why this is a hard to break cycle that makes it nearly impossible to loose weight, until you change the metabolism.  ketones are produced when we burn fat and not sugar, so is an indicator of the metabolic switch.  it happens to be a fun diet with cool strips to push you to follow the diet.  you will have no energy and want to eat all the time, gain weight and not be able to loose.  you will at high risk of heart attack and stroke.  joint issues, depression ect.  proud of everyone.

Thanks Doc.  So I do strength stuff...and I have made muscle-mass gains....but I feel I've plateaued.  I'm in better shape now than was the case twenty years ago.  Not really complaining!  What I won't do is the anabolic stuff.  I will only drive my body hard so as to produce its own chemicals of this nature.

I pace my protein, and BTW, recent research has seemingly debunked the notion that the proteins found in plant sources like peas and beans is in some way "incomplete".  Evidently, that bit of misinformation has driven many to over-consume animal protein sources.  I'm not ignorant in this subject.  I am certain that my protein intake is more than adequate.  I'm an omnivore that eats relatively little meat.

I do some endurance stuff.  But I focus more on strength and balance.  I seek out my own weak areas and work on those.  For me, it is balance and strength which I tend to think most beneficial for me to work on.  Always aim for the hard stuff.  That's where you'll make gains!

In truth, a bit of this is about vanity.  I def. like the trim, muscular look, and so do others.  If one was solely concerned about longevity, I suspect the endurance stuff is the best.  For me, in this lifetime, what seems to work is to throw lots of stuff at the bod.....and just keep at it.  I don't quit.

Hardest group of exercises for guys like me?  All the lunge stuff.  I look at the ladies in the once-a-week class I participate in and notice that they tend to struggle less with those lunges.  But my upper body is such that i could break their bodies in half with my bare hands...not that i do much of that sort of thing....yet they can do lunges better than me.

I work the legs, core, back, buttocks, shoulders, triceps, biceps, forceps, upper back, lower back....we really don't skip anything.  I will make one general comment that is absolutely true....exercise is the key to doing well in later life.  No doubt about it.  Feel so much better.

you are correct on many things.  plant protein is great but requires planning and knowledge that you must have to get enough.  Meat is nearly pure protein.  we need only about 3 oz. a day for maintenance.  a chunk the size of a deck of cards.  fish vs chicken vs pork vs beef is all about the same in terms of the amino acids when broken down.  good fats et cetera can be debated.  If you want to bulk the muscle you need more weight and fewer reps.  and if you are getting enough protein, then you may just need more overall calories.  If you are happy and healthy as you are, so be it.  you can try creatine in moderation. just do not get malignant hyperthermia! :D

Doc very good write up on protein. We have bodybuilders from Albany that are from Albany that come to buy our bison meat .Well one time this group of them came and they were built like brick out houses. They wanted a wagon ride into the bison pasture so these huge muscle guys threw 15 small bales of hay into the wagon to sit on .Before they got the bales all loaded they were exhausted I could not believe it .We unload hundreds a  hour but they were only good for short bursts.

Doc, you are essentially correct in saying I am meeting my goals.  But you know how it is...once you get on this fitness journey, there's no stopping it!  Once one goal is reached, immediately, a new one is set.  And yes, I need more and heavier weights.  That's been a challenge just to assemble the bits needed for fitness workouts.  Heck, I started with nothing more than two pieces of very heavy rebar.  Even those are still heavy enough to weight me down when doing tough workout regimens like lots of lunges with weights, etc.  Then, when I want to do the Russian dead lift or something, I've got just one stepped-up set of dumbells to reach for.  I need more and heavier weights at this point.  That is exactly correct.  In truth, it is hard for one private citizen to have the full compliment of weights, etc. needed for these workouts.

Last night at my one formal group workout session during the week (I do lots more on my own) the instructor got the bosu balls out.  We were to perform some upper-body lifts while standing on those wobbly things.  The instructor-a woman-and her mom(!) could do this with apparent ease.  I could not get going whatsoever.  Again, to look at me, I would be thought to be much stronger than these two people.  Yet they could perform these tough exercises and I simply could not.  I had to do it on the floor.  So no matter how good you think you may have gotten-and most people that look at me would think I'm definitely ripped-there's always something to work on!  As I said earlier, there is some balance issue.  I need to keep working on this stuff, likely so long as I live.  For me, having good balance is a major life challenge.  And being physically strong has become absolutely essential to feeling decent on a day-to-day basis.  I can't believe I didn't used to work out!  What was I thinking?
Title: Re: weight loss contest/support
Post by: doc henderson on February 18, 2020, 09:29:43 AM
it is a balance.  body builders can barely scratch their own noses, and I do not want to know who wipes their bottoms.  yoga is good for balance.  and getting all you core muscles to work together is good.  it is like watching a muscle bound kid on the first day try to carry a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood.  the boss half his size can carry it and walk up a ladder, and talk on his cell phone at the same time.  some of it is learned efficiency.

I'm going to drop back and let this thread back to its original purpose, but in closing, Doc, I have talked to other men who have noted similar issues, so it's maybe not just me.  I'm lean and muscular, fit as a fiddle, but each one of us still has our own challenges.  I guess for me, I just need to (and plan to) keep working on all of this stuff-full range.  Heck, I have yet to rule out an inner-ear issue, so there's more I can do with regard to balance.

Just kinda wonder sometimes why things don't cross over a bit more.  I do so much for balance, yet when I'm back at that class and have to attempt something that I think should go better, but then it doesn't...and I've been at it for about 3 years now....frustration sets in.  But I isn't a quitter!

Can you guys kneel on a stability ball?  I can't either!  But a previous instructor and many of the then students could.  He could sit on the ball with both legs straight out.  So....for someone who cannot do these things, how do you develop that degree of balance and core strength?  I know visible abdominal muscles are not "core" muscles, but like I said, my gut is ripped.  Why can't my balance be better?  How the heck can anyone kneel...or sit with legs straight out...on a stability ball?  I look strong as an ox...but I sure can't do that!

I just read this thread and I'm joining in. I was up to 195 at Christmas. Could not do up my pants or belt.  I am at 188 now. In the past I was always running around the 175-180 mark.
I would like to be 165. I have now cut down on my cookies, and am concentrating on lesss carbs on the plate and more vegatables,, and trying to cut down on the sugar, hard when you have a sugar bush though. ;D
I just  read an interesting book called " Younger Next Year" it is a good read.
My mom 92 and her parents lived into thier 90's. My mom is active, chair yoga, walking, dancing still, Her Dad use to carry buckets of water to his gardens instead of a hose. When he was 91 he suffered heat stoke in April on the golf course. His DR reccomended he take an electric cart or play 9 holes. His comment was " if I can't walk 18 holes I quite"
He would then drive 30 miles to his daughter's house and walk her dogs, 2 miles each, then drive back home for lunch. He ate bacon and eggs every day.
I always thought longiviety was in my genes, after reading the book I now realise it was the moving and exercise that keeps us alive longer.
Keep Moving

One time on Public Radio, some guys were jokingly describing the area they were hiking in as "so remote, they were more than ten miles from the nearest Kwik Trip"!  That's a convenience store/gas outlet......that we've got quite a few of here in this state~You might see one from time to time.

Great job folks! I have been following along.

At 5'6" I"m looking to get to 180 but I seem to be stuck at around 190 it goes up an down about 6 lbs (187 - 193 ish) but that is still better than the 210 I was a few years ago. So far my plan has been "Don't eat so DanG much" and it has worked. I also try to eat more veggies less cookies trying to concentrate on a all around healthier diet without starving myself of any food group.

It has been a matter of putting less on my plate making sure I can see the plate around each type of food on it. I'm pretty sure plates have been getting bigger over the years (will a modern plate even fit in an old cupboard?)

I recently re-watched a Canadian science show on food and weight loss and health, found it quite interesting so I thought I would share a link to it, who knows it may help someone or it my be all BS.

Keep up the good work.

I've been setting my goals in the short term, hoping that setting short very achievable goals translates into getting to the end goal. Here are my upcoming milestone goals.

277- 30 lbs lost
271- we have a 1971 mustang!
269- A new decade the 60s!
267- 40 lbs lost!
261.4- Stanwelch day! :D
261 I was born in 61
259 HAPPY DAYS DECADE!
257 50 lbs lost!
249 A new decade! Now in an era that @doc henderson (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=41041) will not see unless he goes the wrong way!
247 60 lbs lost!
246  Mr. Truck is a 1946 dodge
239  Another new decade! I'll get to experience the 30s in 2020!
237 70 lbs lost
234 its a nice orderly number to shoot for.
229  This is the decade! This is close to the goal
227 80 lbs lost
220  This is the goal to weigh 220 before the end of 2020

I am up a couple but still tending down.  I know what I weigh after sleeping all night, and heavier at the end of the day with food and drink.  when I work all night, I get and extra meal and being awake, a soda or coffee or water help keep me awake and less bored.  so I am still trending well, and sticking to my guns, and with all the success of everyone, I am hardly tempted.  I bought donuts for my kids after I got off this am, and no desire to eat one.  2 more nights, then back into a routine.  getting lots done as I have more energy!  have a good day, I am having a double IPA, gifted to me by a patient, delivered by Gabe my liquor store manager, and son of a local doc.  I will sleep all day, Provide final help with a couple pinewood derby cars late this afternoon, and then back to work.

My reported weights have been dressed with jeans and my belt and normal socks, because that is how I was weighed at the dr office to start out.

30lbs is a long way from the ultimate goal of 87 pounds.

actually, if you look at your success vs time it is even more impressive.  I think you are the kind of person that becomes more committed with success and not the opposite.  you are almost half way there in a very short period of time.  looking forward to seeing the results in GA.!!!!!  It is a lofty goale and you are over 1/3 the way there and no signs of stopping or even slowing down. although I expect the rate to decline over time, prob. a healthy decline.

we just started Jan 26th.  about 40 days ago and you have lost 30 pounds!  3/4s of a pound per day.  at that rate (which I expect and hope to slow down), you will achieve your goal in  76 days.  that is about May 15th.  good god man.  doing great.  you will not get there by then, but keep it happening!

I started on January 18, the day of my first dr appointment when I was told I weighed 307 lbs and was morbidly obese. Did not like being labeled that. I'm not even sure 220 gets me out of the obese category tables but that pic of me in the 70s. I weighed close to 210.

you can look it up based on your height but the government does tend to make healthy folks appear to be obese, as well as insurance folks.  how tall are you?

your PA can refer you to a dietician and they can measure your % body fat, and or your BMI, and figure you ideal body weight for your age.  If I remember and can find them, I can bring calipers for measuring triceps skin fold to estimate body fat percentage.  might be interesting, but take some of the fun, out of Jake's event!  Just so you know, the dietician would prob. say you are going too fast.  but I think it is safe if it is easy now,and would expect it to slow down.  as long as you are not starving yourself.  might be fun for you to get, or borrow, some keto sticks to see if you are in ketosis.  ps if you "borrow" them, they will not want them back! :D  GREAT JOB!
Title: Re: weight loss contest/support
Post by: Jeff on March 06, 2020, 11:08:57 AM
I honestly think the removal of 1000 calories a day in coke I was drinking accounts for a couple lbs a week alone. Im not hungry, in fact the 3 or 4 times i figured i was eating way more than I should that day, turned out I was still way under my calories of 1850-2000 a day.  If you cook your own food  and eat healthy, that can still be a lot of food.

I doubt I am in ketosis as I eat rice and potatoes in my meal plans.  I made this last  night and it was amazing. One of my finest ever concoctions. Roasted potato, chicken gizzards and mushroom soup .

Blackened carrots, celery and a red potato, and toaster oven cod.  Near as I can figure, counting the tablespoon of olive oil and 1/8 cup chicken broth, 469 calories and I'm stuffed.

it would be interesting.  you are not low carb, but you are burning fat for lack of calories.  you are producing ketones, but these can also be further utilized and consumed by your cells. In a sense you are starving/running a deficit. Your new habits should stick with you.  you will have to be vigilant that old habits do not return once you reach your goals.  We are all right there with you!  I slept all day and then helped 2 cub scouts with there mom make the weight and glue on wheels for the pine wood derby.  They invited me to attend, but I will be working tomorrow eve.  so eating well today, and will have a meal at 1 am, since I have had little all day.  last ate at 2 am so the schedule messes with the weigh in.  had 4 meals prev. day (since I was up over 24 hours) and only one meal today.

Week one 258# — 3# loss.

I'm disappointed ☹️.
Here's why. I was 260# Jan 27 when I started a daily gym exercise program. I walk tread mill 30-45 minutes then machine iso/weight work for 30 minutes increasing time and weight/reps. I did not change my eating habits until I started challenge here. Last week I stopped all bread/soda/desserts/candy increased gym activities and ONLY lost 3# >:(

I'm planning to reduce food intake going forward. I want to be at 240 or less by April 17. Any suggestions?

I have lost inches and significantly increased strength and endurance which was my objective for the past 6 weeks. So that is on track. I lost a lot last year after shoulder surgery and I "tweaked " the shoulder after 6 months so backed off physical activity. Shoulder is stronger now than before surgery.

As you age it gets harder to lose weight partially because you are less active. It sounds like your exercise program is doing some good but you are also gaining some muscle mass and probably not losing the fat.
In the end it's all about calories in and calories burned. My suggestion would be to get one of those Fitbits and track activity and food intake and then set weight loss goals.

3lbs is great! Ill be very happy if I can maintain 3 lbs. That would be 60 more lbs by pig roast time! If you are working out a bunch you are gaining muscle as you lose fat. Muscle is heavier than fat

That's sort of a myth. A pound of muscle is the same as a pound of fat. Muscle is more dense than fat so as you build more muscle you lose inches and look leaner.
Here is a link to two articles that do a better job of explaining the muscle vs fat story plus Body Mass Index.

I can feel I am replacing body weight with muscle thus losing some fat. I just would like it to go away faster. I do have a fit bit and use it to track my sleep and on days I'm not at the gym. Will see what this next week brings.

I got it Jeff. A pound of fluffy stuff is more than a pound of muscle. We're good🙂

Stan you are doing great.  everyone is different.  I think it is great to set lofty goals and be able to get excited about the prospects.  do you have a class reunion or something you are loosing for? :)  As you loose even a little you feel better and have more energy, as well your body may reduce insulin levels and make it more like being on anabolic steroids! natural type from you body or more like a teenager.  you goals are great but how fast you achieve them may be the challenge.   3# a week is a pretty fast rate.  And if you are building muscle as you loose fat, it may make the rate of loss less, but you are still healthier.  Muscle is "denser" than fat so takes up less room, and why fat floats on water and steak sinks!  Or at the pool some people sink and others float, and it has to do with their weight to volume ratio (density)!  so at 3# a week, you will loose 60# in 20 weeks.  you can ramp up, but you current rate is healthy, and at least you are not going the other way!  In fact I think that rate will be hard to maintain, and it is prob. better to maintain the new better exercise and eating habits!  even if the losses taper off as you get leaner.

Yesterday I gained a foot in my closet. I took out all the now to big jeans and 3x shirts. Tammy saved some of the jeans for denim material and some of the stuff she bagged up to give to a local church charity her mom is involved with.  In the far end of the closet I was able to find 5 real good pair of jeans Ive not fit in for years now and a few shirts tammy had picked up on sale a few years ago not realizing I had moved on up past that size.  You always throw out the fat clothes and save the skinny cloths. :D

I seem to have settled into the mid 70s for now. Hopefully as the weather turns fair, I'll get a bunch of exercise with all the substantial chores I have facing me this year.  I learned the last two days my stamina is low but I feel pretty good.

I started out needing to wear a 46 waist pant but squeezed into 44s. I an now very comfortably in 42s. I have a pair of 40s on my dresser. I tried  them on and was able to get them on, but they are a bit snug yet. My 3x shirts are baggy, the 2x fit easily. A regular large is just to small, but probably always will be because I'm pretty big boned.  I got on the scales a couple days ago right out of the shower and weighed 271.9 but can't/won't count that until its done fully clothed. Hooefully next week Ill be to the 1971 mustang goal.

Randy, it's really easy to enjoy all the good things in life, even the ones that slowly kill us.  Stay the course and you will succeed.  I changed course 4 years ago and my body thanks me for it.  I just had my annual physical - all blood tests are better than they were 40 years ago.  Yes, some days I would kill for a potato chip or donut, but my health matters more.  Yours does too.  Keep the faith as we are rooting for you.

You guys are an inspiration. I've been following along ever since I noticed my pants were shrinking and my belt somehow got a bit shorter. A friend suggested skipping the sugar. I did and shed 15 pounds rather quickly.  Now, y'all don't do like I did. Reasoned that a donut with my coffee and 1 bowl of ice cream daily wouldn't hurt.  WRONG I'm right back where I started 200+..As of now, there's no donuts or ice cream in the house and I can't go to town to get more..
BTW well meaning neighbors who keep bringing cake, pie, cookies etc to their elderly neighbors don't help..

WEEK THREE —- 9 1/2 #

This was a challenging week. Left South Carolina Saturday morning heading back home to Michigan. Stopped overnight at my son's house for  a visit and birthday celebrations for my DIL and me (yes I did have cake and ice cream  :-\ ).

Arrived home Monday night and set up camp by the barn and pond.
My son and family sold there home and are remodeling their next house so moved in with us last November. Working out good (helps to be gone for 8 weeks). Now with the virus heading our way, my wife and I are keeping our "social distance" and living in our camper.  Grandson is home from college, granddaughter and DIL home from school closure and son still working. All are not avoiding exposure as well as I would like so we are camping being we are in the high risk group due to age.  smiley_old_guy

Gym closed - house exercise room converted to grandson's bedroom— weather (rain and cold) not the best yet.  Still losing and will have to add another hole in the belt. While I was gone my son lost 42# and is looking great - old man needs to kick up the effort!!

Doc, Jeff, sedge and all the others following this thread GREAT JOB and keep up the fight !!

Stan

This thread reminds me of a tale I read about George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Apparently they are close friends and George is quite the prankster. Brad stayed with George several months at one point and George would sneak in and get his clothes every couple of days and take Brad's trousers to his personal tailor and have them taken in about 1/2" or so at a time. After a couple of weeks of that he started asking Brad if he had been gaining weight and Brad said he didn't think so but his clothes felt tighter so he started exercising more and watching what he ate more closely. Meanwhile George kept up his trick. I think it went on for several months and Brad had lost 15-20 lbs or so before he caught on to what had been happening.

  I love a good prankster.

Another good prank I heard about was a lady bought a new small car. Her neighbor would sneak over every couple nights and add a gallon or so of gas to her car's tank. After a couple months he asked her what kind of mileage she was getting in her new car. The lady said "You won't believe this but I'm getting 90 mpg." Then the man started going over and siphoning out a gallon or so of gas every day or so. A few weeks later he asked her again if she was still getting that great mileage. She said "No, I'm only getting 12-14 mpg." The man asked her if she had taken it in for service (since he knew she had). She said she had and he said "Yep, that's what happened. They accidentally left one of those experimental carburetors on and when you took it in for service they took the experimental one off and put to normal one on." Later on he was talking to his buddy the car salesman who told him his next door neighbor was driving them crazy coming over demanding they put that other carb back on.

As long as we are a little off topic, I will share this perfect storm of a prank.  It will let you know that docs are people too... and to be careful who you prank.  so I was working in the ED and had a pt. with a nosebleed that was hard to stop.. I called the ENT doc to see if he would follow up.  He really did not need to come in, but would have if needed, and agreed to see the pt. in the office the next day.   20 minutes later I get a call from a Kansas State Highway patrol, asking if the doc mentioned had a pt. in the ed.  I said yes.  I was then curious as to what was going on.  I had not asked him to come in, but he is a great doc and thought he might be, and also thought maybe he got a ticket for speeding.  5 minutes later, a surgeon came in, who I knew was also friends with the ENT doc.  I said to him, I thought our ENT buddy, might have been pulled over, cause KHP called to confirm he had a pt. to see in the ED.  Turns out the surgeon had just seen the ENT doc at the local quick trip.  the surgeon had left his car running to go in and grab something, and the ENT recognizing his car,  pulled behind the store without the surgeon noticing.  so when the surgeon came out of the quick shop, he thought his car had been stolen.  He figured out when he found it behind the store, that the ENT (whom he saw in the store), had pranked him.  So... 5 minutes later the surgeon (who had been in route to the ed when the prank occurred)and I are comparing notes, in the ED.  So now the surgeon calls the ENT with the ED phone, and alters his voice.  He tells the ENT that he is "officer xyz" and he is in the ED wondering where the "life saving Doc.", who was speeding in route to the ED was.  So we can barely keep from laughing as this call is going on.  Surgeon hangs up, and in 15 seconds, my phone rings and it is the ENT.  "Bryan, is that guy with the nosebleed still there?"  "I am on my way to see him!"  So now we all wait and sure enough, in a few minutes, in walks the ENT.  The faces of the two friends was priceless.  One of the best laughs I ever had.  Karma Baby!

With all the weight loss, you will have to be careful going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.  If your wife sees a skinny guy walk out of the bathroom, she might take you out!  congrats!  you should video your PAs reaction next time you go.  This kind of success is rare as most are not committed.  You are fortunate to get started.  many become motivated only after life changing irreversible complications.

even maintaining for a week is a positive thing.  we all hover a bit depending on hydration, urination and defecation.  so day to day is not so important but to keep us honest with ourselves.  1/2 # q week is healthy.  if you keep it going.  slow loss is not exciting, so it is like only smoking 6 cigarettes' a day,  it is likely you will go back up instead of quitting.  If you loose 4 pounds in 1 day of work, it is more likely dehydration, so if you go back up 2 # the next day, you are rehydrated.  work and activity are good things.  no need to go to a gym for most of us.  We got a new digital scale.  I was up and wanted my old scale back. :D

That'll help on your goal @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1)!
My brothers used to hate helping buck up firewood back on the farm. We'd burn about 7 full cord a winter. I liked it. Something about being out in the woods cutting it, bringing it in and cutting to length and then splitting it. Then burning it. It was an especially contented feeling I guess I'd say. Especially after we built the new house next to the farm and we had a fireplace also. That's like magic seeing the flames dance and hearing the wood crackle and pop.

After twenty years of the exactings of computer work, I enjoy physical work way more. Work where my mind can wander about as I work and still achieve a positive and measurable result in the end.

It's better to save my mindfulness for eating. Mindless eating is unproductive!

Today I started my day with filling some low spots from last falls new septic  then sawed some spruce 2x4s then my wife came with 6 old chickens and 1 rooster so we got them settled in then we had to cover the out side run for the chickens so the hawks can't get them so its been a busy day no trouble with gaining weight to day. Great job Jeff!

What was the final straw that made everyone that's having success in winning the weight battle possible? I do the intermittent fasting (not eating breakfast until after 16 hours from supper, save weekends). Then I use a kids plate when i do eat. I know they say diet drinks actually increases your weight, but I've found that I don't feel nearly as hungry if I drink a couple of 16 oz diet pepsi in the mornings. Plus the caffeine in the morning makes feel a little more lively. I'm steady right now around 150-152 lbs. About 30 lbs lost.

Is it too late for me to get in on this challenge. I did have a gastric sleeve almost 1 3/4 years ago. Lost just over 100 pounds and kept it off, but hit a plateau at 252 and would like to drop another 50 pounds.
Best part is i got off 5 shots a day of insulin, and off bp meds as well. Saved myself close to $2000 a month just on meds alone.

Mrs. Beaver had sleeve to and kicked my butt. She went from 319 pounds to 115 and looks awesome.

Thank you Doc, certainly will join in.

Bu the way, Jeff you look fantastic.

My first recipe to share:
One of my favorite things to cook and eat ( which i never would have eaten before my surgery for reasons i dont know) comes from a support meeting we attended as part of our bariatric surgery. Spaghetti squash cooked in a instapot. Simple as anything. Put one cup water in the instapot, puncture skin of squash randomly about 10 times. Set timer to cook 15 minutes. Cut in half and remove seeds and use for to scape out the spaghetti squash. The squash itself is like spaghetti in texture and is only 50 calories for an entire cup full. I use low calorie alfredo sauce, some cooked turkey chop meat and some grating cheese to give it an awesome flavor. Comes in at about 150 calories a serving even with all that added and is very filling. One medium size squash will give you about 8 to 10 servings that can also be frozen. A real cheap meal to at like $1.29 a pound for the squash

Doc Henderson, you will love that air fryer. I cook all my fish in it and comes out great. Wife loves those blooming onions and it is great for reheating the left over blooming onion to keep them from getting soggy.

Jeff - keep up the good work. I went from a 58 inch waist to 42 and was ever so happy to be shopping for smaller size pants. My goal is to get down to 38. Lot more pants selection and much lower cost when you dont need to shop at the Husky size stores

Come on Stan! Don't  let me catch you, lets say we meet somewhere in the low 20s!

Ive had a lot of exercise this week. Over 10,000 steps a day just working on projects. It started with digging a big deep hole to remove a leaky frost hydrant, then yesterday we had to pull the well pump and 100ft of drop pipe to replace a check valve that was also making our pump cycle. Today I am trenching to the new area where our iutdoor water supply will be. It will get shut diwn and blowed out with the sprinklers in the fall. Im not having another hydrant fail because Im not digging another hole like that again. At least not for that reason!

No wonder Im sore tonight. 16585 steps and it was all trenching and sawmilling and fence building and gravel raking. We piped our outdoor water source over to the new part of the fence, which meant some gravel had to be raked back to trench, then reverse. We built 25' of new fence today and spread about a 1/3 yard of stine we hauled home in a poly sled and buckets.

Wow, the place is looking great Jeff! I spread 5 yards of topsoil today trying to fill in some low spots and prevent puddling and ice spots. I am pooped. Didn't get any milling done at all.
That fence looks great and given the  dump/landfill my neighbor is creating I am contemplating building one myself. Care to share some of your technique? I have two impediments, one is shooting the exact property line to get it right and the bigger issue is drill post holes. We have SO much rock and shelf here that putting holes where you want them is almost laughable. Last guy I knew that put in a straight and true fence hired a well drilling rig to come in and drill holes in the rock for 2-1/2 pipe. :D
I would need a lot of logs to make the fence too, but that is something I could do over time.
Nice work, you should feel right good about all that.

my belly is flatter, but I think with all the work and sore muscles, I have bulked up my arms a bit.  so I am at 180.  I still want to shoot for 160.  My kids like Sonic and McDonalds, and with all the work we are doing in the yard, it is convenient.  when my wife is home (not working)  we split one.  I know it can be done, as we have great examples.  yesterday we processed the ERC slabs, and used them to heat the retort to make lump charcoal.  worked on the pool and sprinkler system.  Kids are finishing up college classes in the next few weeks.  great job Jeff.   8) 8) 8)

actually, as you loose weight,  your human growth hormone should be increasing and insulin levels decreasing.  with better sleep, same thing, and testosterone is related to HGH.  both men and women have both estrogen and testosterone.  estrogen is fat soluble and will go down as you loose weight.  shifting the balance towards building muscle ect.  you are reversing the metabolic syndrome, more towards your youth!  men are supposed to have more T early in development and during reproductive years.  women the opposite.  As many of us know, as you get older the hormones go away.

Had to take the drill and drill a new hole in the work belt. Usually only wear suspenders, but me bride prefers a belt, so a belt it was. I see it's 4 notches smaller then where it was last fall.

229  This is the decade! This is close to the goal
227 80 lbs lost
220  This is the goal to weigh 220 before the end of 2020

237.1  this morning. Over 70lbs!

A couple days ago Tammy and I made a trip out to get some fresh groceries.  I picked up 2 pair of 38 waist pants because I didnt have anything smaller than 40s and they were getting loose.  2 different brands picked out becsuse I liked them not becsuse they fit. I bought them hoping in the near future they would fit, besides that the self appointed queen of Michigan has decreed we are not allowed to try on new clothes.

So yesterday morning I pulled a pair on just to see how close I was getting. Looks like I'll be looking for 36s sooner than I thought. The 38s fit fine as I left them on and wore them.

Maybe I should pull on a pair of the 46s for nostalgia's sake, 'cept I can't.  I sent them big old bad boys packin!

Oh, I changing my goal to 210. :)

When I got to my goal weight (215) 4 years ago, I have been able to maintain it within 5 pounds either way.  If you maintain your new eating habits, you will level out and continue to feel great at the weight you want to be at!

Looks like my body is taking a break. I've not changed anything, but not noted  any weight loss this week. I've had  a couple plateaus like this.

Tammy and I went out under  the guidelines of the queen beotch of Michigan yesterday to get some groceries. We ran into two fellow incarcerated acquaintances. Neither one knew me until I made it known who I was. She was my next door neighbor of 36 years!

234.6. 73lbs lost.

might be my turn to loose a little.  still at about 180.  you have been very active, and I bet that is/was playing a role.  If you are out of projects, could do some walking in the yard or wherever allowed.  you have exceeded all expectations and usual recommendations.  so a little break to let everything catch up is not a bad thing.  great job.

Noom. I had to pay for it after 2 weeks but It is a great tool if you can put up with the millennial lingo :D.   It includes a scanner for bar codes, a great database of foods, plus the ability to add your own. Usually I have to add my ingredients because my meals are constructed from scratch for the most part, but things lige frozen veggies and such it is handy, as you may not know exactly what all is in there.

As an example yesterday it was experimental supper time!

I'll call this a Cod and roasted cabbage and bacon chedder, Toasted Burrito.
Tammy says it's a keeper.

I added up all the ingredients and then divided it in half and it was 372 calories for the entire meal including the birds eye cheese broccoli.

personal choice is a factor, and depends on your goals.  You can look up ideal body weight.  you can get your body fat content measured, usually by a dietician.  You can shoot for the high school weight, but you prob. had more muscle mass then, so could go lower.  at our age, not a bad idea to follow up some labs like cholesterol, and make sure kidney function is ok.  you do not want to start losing muscle mass.   Any time you are loosing weight, it is a relative form of "starvation" and can be hard on the system.  the fat is burned but byproducts expelled via breath, and urine.  thus the Ketosis diet shows if you are burning fat, and excreting ketones.  You may want to add calisthenics, or even mild weight lifting to build muscle.  but if you are thin enough, then you may start to gain weight.  so the weight alone is not always the answer.  what is your height?  You are safe now.  but I understand with the success you have had, might be good to establish and end point, and or to slow the loss down at some point.  you have made a lot of believers here Jeff.

If I ever weigh my IDBW, I would be worried.   :)  at least BMI gives a range.  this is why this is hard.  if you are feeling lean and mean, that is important.  hard to know muscle mass and frame size.  i will never weigh 145 unless God forbid i get cancer or something.  go for a weight that feels good.  more if you have health issues.  i last felt good at 160 a few years back (prep to hike in the mountains at Philmont scout ranch at age 56).

looks like just under 180 would get you to below the upper limit of BMI.  remember, IBW is what doctors think/studies show would be healthy in terms of blood pressure ect.  If you are a hard worker, then you may have a higher muscle mass.  thin Asian folks do not get heart disease like we do, but die from cancer.  till they move here and adapt to our diet!  no one lives forever.

How did the cod turn out?
Title: Re: weight loss contest/support
Post by: doc henderson on May 19, 2020, 08:05:16 AM
I thought it was great.  my wife had trouble with the air fryer and keeping the breading on.  fresh cod (from the store) soaked in buttermilk, and breaded.  she baked a potato for her and a sweet potato for me.  She felt like the cod had no flavor, but I think she meant the breading had fallen off in places.  when we met, she really was not a seafood fan.  so I had a slightly bigger piece, and I got the 2nd half of her piece.  She is getting acquainted with the Noom app, and likes that.  early in the day she was worried she would run out of calories and be hungry.  but that did not happen.  This morning she is down 2 pound and I am up,  it is a conspiracy! 8).  she has done basic stuff in the air fryer.  still getting up the learning curve.  I think turning the cod, knocked off some of the breading.  thanks for your help Jeff

Cod is more difficult to cook than thinner fillets. Be sure to preheat the air fryer. This will help get the outside done quickly and secure your coating. Don't try to turn to early.  For my fish I pat dry first. Important. Then season. (Lawreys season salt here of late) Then dredge in flour. Then dredge in a beaten egg with a touch of milk, then lay it in your planko bread crumbs, coating one side, pick it up and lay it down again coating the other side, then place on your fryer racks. Give then a spritz of pam cooking spray,  6 minutes on one side, 6 on the other. For cod, you may want to increase the time before you turn it, then watch it.  I have the perch fillets down to a science!

This morning. 227.6 lbs.   80lbs removed!  Picked up a pair of 36 waist jeans last week and tried them on Friday to see if I was getting close. They fit perfectly.  So, down from 46 waist to 36. I've not been a 36 for 40 years.  I'm only 7.6 lbs from my original goal of 220, but I've changed that to no specific number. It will be what it will be, but it will diffidently be below 220.

I feel good because of the weight but have been doing some things over the last several months to reduce my stress, which included walking away from things like hosting websites that require high levels of security and email needs (beyond this one). Having to be responsible for so many critical things for others 24/7/365 for years with no ability to have someone relieve my mind for even a day, I firmly believe that stress was killing me.  Staying busy with physical activities where my mind can be free has been life saving.

Well my wife has been doing the Noom thing.  she has lost about 5 pounds in a week.  I am consistently under 180 now, as it helps we are both working on not overeating.  we even went to a crawfish boil on Saturday and she kept track of stuff so no setback due to a party.  I have been doing a ton outside and staying more active than normal.  Georgia just weighed and has lost 6.6 pounds in a week.  not Hungary, feeling good and thinking about food in a new way.  hardest thing is figuring out what to do with an extra 70 calories at the end of the day.  she likes the jolly rancher firestix as a reward.  I am at 177.  thanks Jeff for helping us get started.

Ya know what I do with my extra calories? Add them to the weight loss. :)  unless I'm hungry, and that's not really an issue.  She should be happy with that much in a week for sure!

she says she figured out she was eating 3 times the calories without even thinking about it.  she is a runner so maintained her wt.  running is easier.  I have 17 to go and she has about 8.  we will also see how we feel at those wts and adjust/continue to eat smart and see what happens.

The Friday report.

This morning I am at 224.1 lbs  less than 5 lbs from my original goal of 220.

When I started this I was serious  and determined, but honestly in my mind had doubts. No more doubts. I'm very comfortable and happy with the new eating style we have. I'm more active than I have been for many years.

Yesterday evening Tammy said the last time I looked like this was when we got married, 40 years ago. I am actually in a mode where I'm contemplating when and how to stop loosing.  I really eat all I want now. Cooking has become a favorite thing, and sharing or helping others to find the way I found is fulfilling. I'm trying not to be the guy that preaches you need to do this or stop doing that, but try to be ready and eager to help others with what I've learned if they ask. And I am. :)

Onward to 222!

223 is a very sleek and lethal round in ballistics!  thanks for joining us @WDH (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=4370).  I am hovering around 180 today as I am on a 5 day work stint.  always harder but trying to eat the same at work.  My wife was up 0.4 yesterday, but down less today.  great success to all, and anyone in the background feel free to jump in, or just follow if you want.  @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1)  had inspired us and we are having success.  I started at 190 and have certainly kept the 10 pounds off.  Hydration and BMs can cause some day to day fluctuations.  I always weigh first thing in the morning after an empty bladder!  My wife's sister started noom yesterday.

Gentlemen! This will be my first post, as I feel it is the only topic on the forum that (for now) I have some expertise in. I played hockey growing up, juniors after high school and a year of college hockey as well before injuries forced 'retirement'. After I concluded my final season, I put on about 20 pounds a month, until I hit almost 300 which at 22 years old and 6' tall is not a flattering look. Over the past 13 months I have lost 134 pounds and currently sit at 162 pounds, back at fighting weight. I can say from years of experience in the gym and working with different diets that it truly is pretty simple. My biggest tip to you all; completely cut processed sugars if possible, natural sugars only. Aside from that, most diets have some pretty serious kickback if/when you go off of them, causing weight to come back terrifyingly fast. On that note, I recommend normal diet, but counting calories to make sure your output is higher than your intake, and drink 1-2 gallons of water a day! No need for anything crazy, just an active lifestyle with a healthy amount of calories, no matter where you get them!

Also a quick side note, I use Whoop for my food/calorie tracking. A small monthly fee gets you a watch that tracks not only exercise and calories, but also monitors resting heart rate and sleep patterns, and can monitor any health issues you may have. No pun intended, but just some food for thought haha!

Last night I found some frozen squash in the freezer. Watcha going to do with the squash Tammy says. I dunno I says.

This morning it was thawed and I was inspired. I may have invented my best recipe yet!  I ran it through  recipe analyzer and its really low calorie and healthy, and best of all it turned out perfect when I had no clue if it would. I just added stuff but kept track of what this time. I'm  really pleased with this and pleasing myself is almosted impossible.  I used the airfryer on bake. 350 for 20 minutes, switching trays at 10. No reason you cant use an oven. You can leave out the sugar as its just a sprinkle of brown before you bake, and a sprinkle of white powdered after.

Give the cookies a spray of pam before you bake, and bake on sprayed foil.

I present to you my friends, Squashed Breakfast cookies!

Thanks to Jeff I started noom Tuesday. After 4 days i lost 4#.
I was stuck at 241 for 3 weeks. found out I was eating too many calories on the low carb diet.

I like the noom meal/calorie tracker but the psyco stuff is a bit too much

Anyone using a good calorie tracker app?

I see WDH snuck in there and he is doing well !!

some will loose fast and some slow.  can hit a wall.  I am at 180.  work vs home working at the shop, sawmill yard.  at least I am maintaining 180 down from 190.  My wife doing Noom is helping me as I pattern after her, eating proportionately.  At work eating salad for lunch, eggs for breakfast.

I got a message from from my nephew who had bariatric surgery probabl 10 years ago. And is struggling right now. I tried to dig down and give him what I feel is MY answer to what he asked.
QuoteSo whats your secret with losing all this weight? What all are you doing? I have really been struggling lately with my weight. I've gained a lot during this stay at home  crap started. I really need help . I'm trying to use you as inspiration to lose weight. You have to be feeling awesome after losing that much weight!

Keeping track of everything that goes in my mouth and keeping under 1400 calories a day. I dont drink calories other than a small glass of 1% milk 2 or 3 time a week. Drink water. Drink coffee. Drink tea. Dont drink calories!! Dont drink diet anything.  Get your head right. Why are you eating? Boredom? Find something to do. Stress? Get rid of the stress. What ever it is. Who ever it is, dump it. Ive walked away from over half of my business  because it was killing me.  Eat because you are hungry. Give your dog(s) the last couple bites. Hungry? Eat! But don't eat until you are full. Eat until you are satisfied. By tuning into the food, taste, smell, appearance,  it will add everything and more you think you might lose with smaller portions. Smaller portions in time start looking larger and larger as your body and mind embrace what you are doing. Especially your mind!

Dont clean your plate because you should. The last bite is so boring compared to the first bite. The middle bites are mindless chewing. Clean it if you are hungry. Get more if you are hungry.

Think about what you are eating. Before, during and after. enjoy the process. Look forward to it. Design your meals! Plan them  but be flexible. Be the king, not the slave of how you look at food. Remove the love hate from everything you can. Make eating well your job. Its the best paycheck you can get with great fringe benefits and you will grow to be friends with your boss.

You can do it. Think before you eat. Smile and enjoy the process. YOU CAN DO IT.

Thanks for asking Matt8

Week 14   233#  28.4# lost.

Since I started logging calories, I have doubled the rate of loss. I started logging with the Noom app but have switched to the Lose It! app.
The " Lose It! " app logs calories and weight with no frills, which I like, and it is FREE.   :)

I don't think I'll try the weight loss accelerator like Jeff.  smiley_tom_dizzy01 smiley_ignore

Georgia is under 130 (her first goal).  she has been a runner for years and never lost weight since she ate to compensate for the calories she burned.  she is planning for a 126 weight, but she will do as Jeff has done, and re-evaluate as it happens.  she was at 120 when we met.  I think that will be too low.   I am at 176 so holding steady and moving slow...  but in the right direction.  :).  Thanks Jeff and Tammy for the platform, for the support, and being an inspiration for us all.

I was at a high of 212 around Christmas.  My goal for a loooong time was 185.  When this tread started, I actually gained a pound or two.  I was sloooowly loosing and got down to 197 last week.  I was working up on my cabin for 3 days hauling logs and such that when I came home last night I was at 190.5 (slightly dehydrated).  Had a big dinner and this morning I was at 193.  Haven't been there for 2 or 3 years.  Maybe 185 is doable this year.

(Waiting for my attaboy from our on staff pepper meister @Ianab (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=460) ;) )

I used that in my breakfast. But the real news is after breakfast, (and with pants on) I weighed in at 212.6. 95lbs lost.

Jeff you are looking mighty fine!!
I have a cover up and put greenhouse poly on it. We planted more than 50 pepper plants in it. Like a wind tunnel. All sorts of different kinds. A lot of ace pepper, sweet ones. I can't do the hot ones. I laid down a piece of back plastic first. I always use black plastic. My plants get so big I have to put tomato cages around them. The plants will lay over with so many peppers on them. I get big, woody stocks too. Being in Maine them plants need some heat.

Everyone seems to be doing good and thats great , I've been losing some weight don't know how much I've lost we don't have a scale and since the pandemic Dr's are not doing office visits but pants are loose and Im comfortable in 40"pants again but what I'm excited about is the fact that my 3month sugar average is below 7 which in Canada is what the Doctors target I don't know how that compares to the U.S. scale but I have had diabetes since 1998 and that's the first time it has been good.

It is a pampered chef, but you can't buy them right now unless you host a party, as the quantities  are drastically limited to stock on hand for the forseeable future. I have a friend who is a dealer is how I know.

you can let the dealer know, and if someone else is having a party, you can ask to get it through them, especially with covid.  if you want.  it will add to their total which gets them stuff.

Well, this morning I weighed in at 209.5. At 207.7, 1 will have lost 100 lbs. I can guarantee after today, that won't  happen for at least a few days now, but that's  okay. I have been dedicated, and can count maybe on one hand the number of days over the last 6 months that I felt I had over eaten. Today, I ate past full. I won't do that again. Until the next time.  ;D  But that's okay too. I know now, alI what I need to know to stay on the path I'm on and still allow myself the side trip to see the worlds largest ball of string. :)

Awesome.  That's great progress, congrats

Thats great Stan! That's a great picture. I bet that slab doesn't weight 40lbs. Imagine carrying that around all day. I try and think about 100, (102 now) and it doesn't compute. I don;t know how I functioned from day to day. Many times I didn't.

I continue to exercise both physically (cutting logs) and portion control (less food) at least 3 days a week while working on my cabin.  Came back yesterday down to 185# (water loss) and was only at 188# this morning.  I think I'll keep going to at least 185 but I can see 180 from this point in the tunnel.

It seems to be a lot easier to go up as we get older, than down.  even if we just keep trying, and all we accomplish is maintaining at a good wt., that is ok.  with a lot of hard work, I agree, it can be dehydration vs building muscle mass (wt. fluctuation).  if you work your muscles hard, it will break down, and the myoglobin and protein can be hard on the kidneys so try to hydrate as you go.  if you feel trimer and muscles more toned, may be staying the same wt. but still in better shape.

Danny, I hope you had help moving those maple slabs. Those babies were heavy!  Next winter (Lord willin' and the creek don't rise) I think I could come just to have some more shrimp tacos. They were the best I've had!

I must be melting, although we finally had a day out of the 90's and some rain yesterday. I continue to eat until I am satisfied. I do not go hungry ever. All through this change I have never once been hungrier longer than it took to go eat something and I am still losing weight.  My energy has never been higher. This morning I weigh 204.5.  I may have to start wearing my shirt tucked in since the dunlop disease is completely gone.*

Weirdness I tell ya...
This morning I awoke from a dream where I had stepped on the scales, looked at my weight, then looked up at myself in the bathroom mirror, where promptly my reflection went "poof!" leaving me looking at a puff of smoke in the mirror.

I got up, went in and stepped on the scales. I weighed 200.1 lbs. I promptly stepped off and went and ate a big 2 egg and ham and cheese and jalapeno breakfast wrap. :)

Luke is on the baseball team so regular workouts are the normal for him.  Funny thing was that he was exempt from the school/team workouts this Summer because the coach saw that he was getting plenty of exercise.  He is 6', 200 pounds, and solid as a rock.

I will be sawing next week and will greatly miss him being with me.  :-\

My BP is checked every 2 weeks when I donate platelets.  Pretty normal to be 118/62 +/-5 on each.  They now use an automatic machine so it is fairly consistent.  This past Monday it came up at 93/54.  I said, no, that's not right- I feel fine, not lightheaded.  It has to be higher than 90/50 or they won't take blood.  Anyhow, checked it again and it was 95/56.  That is the lowest I've ever seen.  Then again, I don't drink coffee ;)

No, because I've injured myself more than once. I'm not smart enought to understand I'm now to old to do the things I used to do. Right now I just took off a back brace to put a heating pad on.

well this thread was started end of January this year, so approaching 1 year.  we have had some success and some miracles.  My goal with all the stress and holidays, is to not go the wrong direction.  hard to loose over holidays, but if you try, you can maintain.  one year I actually lost weight over the holidays.  good luck to all, and congratulations on the poster children of weight loss who continue to maintain after their initial weight loss.  me personally at about 186.  been tough with wife working lots of different hours, lots of take out and eating what ever is in the house.  two kids who can drive, always offering to get food.  happy holidays! :new_year:

I've spent most of the last 3 weeks not paying any attention to anything. I was busy at the cabin doing stuff like spreading stone and cutting brush cabin repairs and hunting. This folliws the previous two months where I did nothing because of a back and abdominal injury incurred while building our timber pavilion.  It took me quite awhile to recover from that. Not quite there, but much better.

All that being said, I am still under 210.  A far cry from 3 years ago when I got on the wii fit board and it wouldn't work. When trying to figure it out  I discovered that it had a weight limit of 330. So at one point, I had weighed over that

I feel good at this weight. At 199, I felt feable.

yes, I think it started near the end of January.  Lots of success.  I have floundered a bit up and down.  my wife max was 140 and now is 124 to 126.  we are back on noom and I am down 3 pounds.  My goal is a reset at 160#.  I am (was) about 5 foot 8 inches.  I plan to add some work out routine to my week.  work had been my excuse.  we all know it can be done, as our leader @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1) has proven.  If you are reading this and thinking about losing some weight, or getting healthy, jump on in.  What better time than now, and a new years resolution.   8)

I'm at around 215. Ive been creeping up a bit, but on purpose. I think I lost too much. My cloths that fit loose at 199, fit nice at 210-115.  I'll probably tighten up a bit and cruise back down to 210.

Well, I started at about 218-220.  I eventually made it down to 187 but didn't stay there too long.  I settled at about 192-194.  Since Thanksgiving, I crept up to 204 but managed to get back down to 199 since the cookies are all gone.  I'm 5' 11".

I haven't really been all too worried about my weight , my main concern has been blood sugar which I have struggled with for years. The last year I have managed to find a groove (not a rut) A1C or whatever that 3 month report has been under 7 even during the pandemic which pretty much shut our live bait and rock shop down, also losing both my brother in December 2019 and then my daughter this past July didn't help either. This forum with all it's members has been a great help in giving me something good to look at and encourage me to keep on keeping on and things will get better.
Congrats on your successful weight loss.

I started at 261# Feb 28th and got down to 205 by end of September.
Maintained this weight until thanksgiving-Christmas when I added 5#.
I was at 210 this morning but want to get down to 170# before October this year.

This all continues to be interesting to me, that is why the personal success I think. Especially the experimental cooking. Wraps in the airfryer can be tasty and nutritious. One of my favorite things to do. Yesterday we had chili dogs in a wrap with onion rings, the onion rings were a bit over cooked but tasty, this morning we had steak and egg and pepper wraps for breakfast. S real winner.

I'm sure Jeff knows it takes a little discipline and making a few different choices on a consistent basis. It is easier said than done. That's why many fail. But if you set your mind to it you are unstoppable!! I've been there and dropped a 120lbs before. I need to get serious and drop a few pounds, hit the weights and amp up the cardio. Been getting a little soft not going to the club. Just haven't been consistent moving the iron at home. Losers make excuses and winners find away. Time to man up and suck it up. You can run with the young studs when your older but your recovery is just not the same. That's just the way it is

I counted 10.  maybe a little blue creeper to the elbow and shoulder joints.  :D :D :D not much discussion about weight loss.  I had been thinking, and as usual Jeff pushed me over the edge.  We should expand into fitness routines.  i know some supporters of the military do neat routines often named after a fallen hero.  I heard of one where you run a bit, and then pull out a card, and the suits are a calisthenics, and the number is how many you do.  I used to do P90X but not sure the joints would appreciate this.  I find myself more stumbly with near falls around the mill yard.  not as limber and bouncy as I use to be.   I think some strength and balance stuff might help.  I have not set up a you-tube account to post video, but in my teens I won a push up contest by doing 100.  then someone beat me by a few.  so I did a another hundred and a few more than they did.  those were the days aye boys.  any ideas or thoughts on fitness.  8) great job Jeff.

Resistance training is excellent. Your working your muscles and cardio. If you don't have weights then you can do what Jeff did. For the pushups I would do like 5 sets of 10 for a nice workout a couple times a week

(https://forestryforum.com/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.builtlean.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2010%2F08%2FIdeal-Body-Fat-Percentage-Chart2.jpg&hash=023cdc180316327d601af9a6510dc345f4d3fb66)
I did get down to 147. Through the summer i gained some back and was 155. I now had gained back to 165. i'm now on a different diet. I eat 4 - 6 ritz crackers first thing in the morning before I take my pain medication (can't take it on an empty stomach). Then I drink 8 oz of the bolt house green something and 8 oz of the naked berry one for lunch. Then for supper I eat jello with fruit in it. i'm trying to do the stationary pedal bike, but just too painful.

my wife just bought the Mirror thing with online live and recorded workouts.  Like the beach body style stuff, but with a mirror for a screen.  expensive, $1450 up front and $50 a month for membership.  My wife has had a trainer for her marathons in the past and that is even more, so she will give that up.  she can have 6 people on it for the membership.  we will see, not for everyone.  covid has made many winners and losers.

drinking lots of water is good.  keeps you full, and protects the kidney from all the nitrogen liberated from the excess protein and therefore amino acids in the high protein diets.

Spent 5 days working at the cabin eating when and what I wanted. Got on the scales at 110.2
I actually know when I need to eat now. I can get an empty tank now if I don't. It used to be I would eat to eat, eat to much and then not feel like doing anything.  Now if I don't eat when I am hungry I can feel my energy dropping, and then when I do eat, it is like getting my battery charged. I can feel the energy come back.

I had went up to around 225 at deer season after not weighing myself all summer, but my clothes all fit the same. Pretty sure it was muscle gain from all the cabin work all summer.

However, in the 2 months since I closed the cabin, I had went up to 240. Still in the same clothes, but not comfortable. Im back down to 234 and plan on working on it until im back between 215 and 220. By then break up will be here and I wont havt to worry about it because ill be outide and active.  I just dont do well in the cold any more, so physical winter activities past keeping snow cleared are few.

Quitting grains, processed food, cane sugar, corn syrup and seed oils has largely eliminated my continuual hungry state.

When dabbling back into it i discovered that what i used to consider "hungry" is actually some form of indigestion.  I was raised on almost entirely industrial food and though i never got fat i never knew that there was such a thing as satisfied between meals.  Id go from full to hungry at all times.  It was actually from full to stomach ache to full to stomache ache ...

The first week of wheat withdrawal was intense craving all over like a true addict.  Now its slightly mental.  Every few weeks ill say what the heck.  Ill make big sandwhich that ive been dreaming about.. And its just not as good as i remember. Each time makes it easier to give up.

Never weighed myself as its more about pain management and getting my wifes condition under control.  I certainly feel better.

I'm not trying to enter any contest.

From the beginning of September to the beginning of October, I dropped 25 pounds. Which might not sound like a lot. But going from 179 to 154, you can really tell the difference.
Then suddenly, I leveled off in the mid 150's. In December, I managed to put on a couple pounds and get back above 160.
Now today, I'm back down to 154.

The first 25 pounds came with zero appetite. I barely ate a thing for several weeks. Of course, Wifey signed me up to see the GP. He didn't see anything in the bloodwork, etc that would point to any issues. He said let's just wait it out.
That's when things leveled out for a while. But now, today, the numbers are going down. I've noticed I don't have much of an appetite again. Only ate half my dinner last night and one piece of toast this morning.

Well here we are again.  I think we all compete with our own will power.  We all were winners last time, but I am back where I started.  It is still good to try.  If you quit smoking every other year, for a year, as an analogy, it is still better than not.

But Doc I've read its bad for you to continually gain and lose weight.  That not true?

I got down to 165 from 200 over 18 months. Kinda quit trying to lose more then when I hit 165 and wife thought I was getting to thin.  Ive gained back 10 pounds of that.   I figure its time to start watching myself again. When I lost the weight everything improved, BS, BP, cholesterol, everything.

Im in need of shedding some. Ive not been getting around good but still eating. Was in an mri for a total 90 minutes yesterday. Been jumping through onsurance hoops since spring to finally get to some testing that might give an answer. They threw 2 months of pt at me this spring that was required.
