Sorry to say we will not be able to get free this year for the piggy roast. For a while we thought we could but now find we will have to wait for another year. :'(

We are trying to book a flight to Toronto to visit Carla's sister and then drive down through Port Huron a Farmerdoug suggested.
Our plan after the Pig Roast was to drive up over the Mac bridge and through the UP and cross into Canada again at Sault St Marie then fly back out to Toronto then back to Vancouver. We don't have passports.

BUT,we were told that if we rent a car in Toronto,it has to go back to Toronto. :-X
DanG it,I don't want to retrace our steps! Are there any car rental outfits that do allow dropoffs in other towns?Maybe we should rent a Uhaul moving van, they don't seem to mind if you drop em somewhere else.

Why are you flying from Sault St. Marie back to Toronto and then back to Vancouver?

Sault to Toronto by car through the US is 8 hours and 11 hours through CN.

Paul_H

No direct flights.  ???

If we could fly direct from the sault,we would but we have to go back to TO to get to Vancouver.I know that by the end of the trip I'll be barn sour and will just want to go home.
I hate cities and would drive along way to avoid them. The saginaw airport was great, nice and laid back but we have no passports :)

Can't get passports ???

farmerdoug

What are the car rentals places in Toronto?  I am sure it would be hard to leave a car is the US though.

Sorry for being slow to reply to your question Marcel,I did reply yesterday but I must not have hit the post button after I did all that two finger typing  ::)

Our plan is to leave on or about the 29th of July and visit with Carla's sister for a few days and then pick our way down to the border at Port Huron and then on to Harrison Thursday the 2nd or Fri the 3rd.There will be Carla and I and the two little ones and possibly Jodi.

Because of the car rental problem,we might have to abort the UP tour and head back to TO :-\
I want Carla to talk to her sister and see if her and her husband have any other ideas about a car rental outfit that might allow a dropoff at another town.

I'll let you know as soon as I find out and see what or where we might meet.

Paul, Another thing to check is if the car can be taken into the US at all. Some rental companys do not allow the car to leave the country. Be it US or Canada, I have seen the agreements state this.

Furby

Been doing some digging and some compaines that operate in both the US and Canada will allow border crossings with prior permission.
I just got one quote that I belive meets Paul's specs, but the price is in the ballpark of $3600. :o :o :o

This is from one site:
Canada
The Canadian Import Law prohibits Canadian Citizens from taking a U.S. owned rental vehicle from the U.S. into Canada. The rental vehicle will be seized by Canadian Customs at the border, whether the Canadian renter plans to return the vehicle to a U.S. or Canadian location. The U.S. owned rental vehicle cannot be imported into Canada, even to temporarily cross the border. However, a Canadian may rent a Canadian owned vehicle in the U.S. and return it to Canada or cross the border without the vehicle being seized. Any U.S. Citizen renting a vehicle in the U.S. may drive across the U.S./Canadian border with no restrictions. The driver may be asked by Customs to show a rental agreement and a form of identification, such as a driver's license.

Paul_H

Thanks for that,it might save us some grief down the road eh? :D
I'm still having no success with the car rental. They all want it returned to the pick up location.

Is there a car ferry that crosses Lake Huron?

I guess if they sieze the car at the border my problems end there. We'll simply take a bus to the airport, leaving that nasty business to Customs and the Car rental ;)

Furby

I'm not having too much trouble finding one ways.
Just one ways that pick up and drop off where you want Paul.
You shouldn't have any trouble coming into and going back out of the US with a CA rented vehicle.
You would have trouble flying into the US and driving out though.

QuoteWe'll simply take a bus to the airport.....

I don't know what's available but, why not bus or train or other public transportation part of the trip and eliminate the car/border problem?  Also, Your U-haul truck idea has some merit as well.  Just drop it at a border town and then rent a car on the US side?
Been there, done that.   Never got caught [/b]
Retired and not doing much anymore and still not getting caught

Kevin

Paul, if it's a ferry you're looking for there's one here ...

Furby

That ferry would be great if they were skipping the roast. :D

farmerdoug

Paul,

Could you rent a car from Toronto to Sarnia, take a bus or cab to Port Huron and then rent a cab from Enterprise to Jeff's and back to Port Huron.  Then reverse back?

I wonder if Via Rail Canada has a train from Toronto to Port Huron still?

Toronto to Sarnia is $250-$275 for a midsized car.
Once in the US, anything is possible.
They can rent a car in the states no problem, but it will have to stay in the states.
From what I'm seeing, they actually have better options if they rent in Canada, dropping at Sault Ste. Marie is the hard part.

Paul_H

farmerdoug,

The train is an interesting idea,I'll check into it.I'm going to try and talk to Rent a Wreck on Monday during business hours and see what they will do.

I'm getting stubborn on the car rental thing here.I don't mind driving out of TO but I sure as heck don't want to drive into it.

Furby,

You're fast and efficient :D

If you can get to Port Huron, Enterprise rentals have cars for around $50/day with unlimited mileage.   I know the Canadian passenger rail use to run through Port Huron but it has been awhile so that may have changed.

He can get an enterprise minivan for a week for around $285 w/unlimited miles.
And enterprise will pick them up! ;D

Even if Jodi goes, the train from Toronto to Sarnia is pretty affordable all things considered, so that was a pretty good idea FarmerDoug. ;)

sorry for sounding dumb but what all goes on at the rog roast.  I plan on being in northern Indiana the day before  and that would be on our way home
