Way back when, they tried it and when someone died, they quit.
In the '60's, some brilliant kids were bored and being stupid, tried it.   When
one died, they tried it again.  Eventually the brilliant ones were all gone.
Now look what we're left with, people that jump off of buildings with parachutes.  :D

I went back to the mushroom on the driveway with the camera and
Here it is.

And I found a second down the road a little bit.

They're exactly what I see up here in fall Tom. I gave my brother my 'shroom book. So he says.  ::)  :D

I suspect it is also based on "when you get hungry enough, you will try anything..."

Let's see - starvation on the one hand, trying a new food on the other. One way or another, your pain will soon be over...  :o

See Swampy - you ole poison eater you!

My stomach was growling, maybe I need another handful.  ;D

Common in NZ too, although not native to these parts.
I see that it's surrounded by pine needles, that seems to be the common factor, only ever see them under pine trees.

QuoteAn introduced species which is associated with Pines. By crushing the cap in milk, or sprinkling it with sugar one can make a poisoned bait for killing flies.

Now we know where the common name came from too  :P

Some mushrooms contain chemicals found it rocket fuels.

I also read somewheres that the amanita muscaria contains ibotenic acid and muscimol, whatever those are - hallucinogens I think.  Anyway, there are people that dry and smoke it and ingest it. smiley_thumbsdown

Russian Roulette.

Here, stick this poison mushroom in your mouth.  It'll make your eyes cross, then it'll kill ya.

Amanita muscarias are again appearing in the edge of my driveway and throughout the pinestraw in the field.  It's time for a refresher course.

These are dangerous.  Don't eat them. Especially watch children who may taste one innocently.  There is no cure or antidote.

Not all Amanita are red.  Some are white.  Some are green.  That skirt around the stem is a a good warning.

Many poisionous mushrooms contain the compound methyl hydrazine ( also known as rocket fuel ). It affects the central nervous system in various ways. It also has a low boiling point so parboiling or frying will cause it to evaporate. The problem is you never know how much boiling or frying is enough.
