funding urban forestry

I'm working with the City of San Francisco on their new Urban Forestry program. Right now, we are in the initial stages of planning; namely, looking for funding. I'm curious and looking for resources on what other cities of comparible size have done (ex., parcel taxes, etc.) to fund city-wide projects to increase canopy cover.

It sounds like a sizable project.  Here's a link that I've found:

From what I can gather, a lot of this work is done through grants.  If you could organize at a smaller levels, you probably could get some citizen involvement.

Keep in touch on how things develop.  Urban forestry is an area of interest for some here on the board.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
