Title: drying wood

could I take a piece of wood 4ft long 3in thick 6in wide and dry it on my base board heat if so how long would it take  or would it dry to fast and crack

At 3" thick, I believe that it will dry too fast and split and crack.  You probably need to go slower.  Get it to below 25% moisture content before you hit it with the baseboards.  Unfortunately, this will take a while.

Might depend a little on species that you didn't mention, but yeah, it will blow up if it's green and you warm it on top of a heater. Might last 5 minutes before the cracking started!
