That is what I do. Clear old pastures.
I will never get it done with the equipment I have. Chainsaw, 40hp tractor and one man.  ffcheesy
Take videos now!!!!
I wished I had.
I am doing that from now on.
I am working on the meadow and am doing that now.
I cut everything but the red oak. Leave them for the acorns. I have 1000's of red oak, so I could cut them and would never miss them.
Another reason I bought an OWB, needed a way to burn all that softwood with out a runaway fire.
I tried in a wood stove for 4-5 years.
Then the ground maybe a little uneven and that needs to be leveled out.
I mowed most of anything I claimed back with a push mower and a trimmer.
Keep the bushes from coming back and "grass" will come back in.

Quote from: cutterboy on February 02, 2025, 07:26:42 AMThose spruce sure do have a lot of branches. Must take a while to cut them all off. However, nice straight trees.

I also have a pasture that was abandoned about 60 years ago all grown up to trees. Mostly ash, red maple and black birch. Only the ash grew straight enough for saw logs so lots of firewood from the rest.
Yes, they are a bear to limb. Actually started using my Stihl 462 with a 25" bar to limb. Much easier than with my 261 and 16" bar. Never thought I'd use that saw for limbing.

Don't know sizes of saws and tractors but know CC and hp.  :wink_2:
I have a 50cc and a 70cc.
The small one is in my hands more then the big one.
Yes, the big one will saw faster, but I can't saw as long because of how heavy it is. So I can saw more with the small saw.  :wacky:

I've got a couple hickory's behind my garage that I'm going to have to cut. They're shading my roof and I should have cut them before I built it but to late now. In my younger days I would have put my 30' ladder against them and climbed up to attach a cable but I'm afraid to go that route .Ordered a throw bag and rope so I guess I'll try that. They are bigger than they look and leaning towards the garage and I'm not getting any younger. Will make good firewood as the last I put on the mill sawed really well but  lost at least half in the drying process plus I need firewood more than I need hickory lumber.

One thing I have enjoyed this winter.
I can saw wood and leave it on the ground, and it don't freeze to the ground.
Has not really got above freezing, well I should say no melting going on, for the moth of Jan.
Most times I hit it with the loader to get it to move.

I have a Husky 550XP with a 16" bar and a 359 with a 24" bar and skip chain. If I use the 359 for felling I will start limbing with it but the first time I have to rest I switch to the 550 like @thecfarm. More bending and reaching but much lighter. I hate the fact that I am getting weaker.

My reason is not because of age that I have a small saw.
I used that 372,70cc saw, for years. I think I bought it in my mid 20's?
I used that saw in the summer quite a bit.
Then my father wanted to log this land himself, with my help and we started to cut wood.
But I was having shoulder pain long before this. Would get so bad that if I rolled over on it in the night, the pain would wake me up. I spent some money on that shoulder trying to find out what was wrong with it, besides nothing.
In 2011 I won a 50cc efco saw on the FF!!!
Seem like it was a FF pig roast prize and the person that won it did not want it, so Jeff had another drawing, and I won it!!!
After I used that saw for about a month, I noticed my shoulder was feeling better!!!
I just might be on to something here.
I had no idea that big saw was killing me!!!
I used it more and more and my shoulder felt better and better.
That is why I ran a small and a big saw now.
That small saw does not cause the pain that big one did.
I may be getting weaker too, but I enjoy "working" my land.

They are your trees and you can do as you please.  Just remember you can saw lumber into firewood, however going the other way is a no go situation unless you are looking for real small boards.

So Ray, can we surmise that the moral of your story is: "If it hurts when you do that, don't do that!" ? ffcheesy ffcheesy

Took me about 50 years to learn that one myself. I thought it would only hurt a little while, but it turns out it can be cumulative. :wink_2:

OK, maybe I'm the woodcutter now.
I work with wood, There is a rumor I might be a woodworker.

I did not know where the pain was coming from because it hurt all the time.  :wacky:
I am not the type to not work outside and I just blamed it on something going on with my shoulder.
If I would of sat inside and watched TV for a couple weeks, I might of came too.

The cold has been great with just a little snow. My swamp has frozen up nicely. I got a road cut 70 to 80 yards out and I'm pulling soft Maple for next year's firewood. Maybe 2 years worth. I'm going to cut till the snow is too deep to walk in.

I've been cutting up a mess of mess from a few inches in dia to a few feet. If I have to lift above waist high or climb on a pile I like my 346 (50cc). Waist and down I like a 70cc with a lightweight 32" bar (I'm 6') and full comp chain. No bending and reaching. I keep the chain aggressive so it will load the saw and cut fast in the small stuff, I don't bury that chain in big stuff. I can use the chain to yank small rounds towards me or shove them away too.

The ScorpionKing was right up by the landing cutting the last bit of this block, so I threw my phone in the window of the forwarder for a video. So the production  quality is quite low😊

I've just been helping these guys out in the afternoon, getting the forwarding caught up. I call myself a "free agent cut to length operator", I think I have 4 different outfits I've worked for this year.

The nice thing about being a fill in is instead of your output being expected like a full time employee, you get to be a hero every time you show up😁

Making progress on my winter logging, ground is good and frozen and there is snow to skid logs on. Cutting plenty of white pine, stacking up the log pile to saw come spring. Here's a couple of the more bushy top ones, with good butt logs.

This one was a hard leaner that landed on a thicket of brush, suspending the top off the ground. Made it tricky limbing the already bushy top, but got it done.

A lot of my spruce are dying off, so I'm trying to cut them while their still solid. I'll use the smaller diameter ones for sawing into natural edge siding.

VTwolfie, good to see you posting.
Looks like you have a Norse-Igland winch?
That tractor sure does look good for working in the woods.

BB that sure seems like some small wood. What is the end product?
Two LT70s, Nyle L200 kiln, 4 head Pinheiro planer, 30" double surface Cantek planer, Lucas dedicated slabber, Slabmizer, and enough rolling stock and chainsaws to keep it all running.

Yes, I got the Igland 4501 works well no complaints. the MX5400 seems to be a real good size for woods work.

More white pine.

A few years back I did a clear cut for one of my neighbors, so he could put in a food plot. Got a call he wanted to go back in and cut some of the tall pines around the edge of it. And same deal as before, I'd get the logs.

As requested everything I felled went into the clearing, and that made for a fairly straight forward job. Was nice having room to work. ffsmiley

Had to thread this one in between "save" trees, but it went where I wanted.

Was kinda fun watching these go down on the frozen rock hard ground. The branches practically splattered, and they basically limbed themselves when they hit the ground.  ffsmiley
A couple had double tops, and one I knew would land sideways because of where I had to fell it. Popped a 3' long crack at the fork, but that was double heart wood anyway so no big loss.

Couple of saw logs ready to skid out. Worked good to drag them out 16' 8" long, then later buck them to 8' 4".

After photo. Saw plenty of fresh deer tracks in the snow, I think they liked the fresh branches I cut for them to browse. ffsmiley

CS, it's all pulpwood mostly going to either UPM for paper, or Sappi where they make bulk cellulosic fiber or paper.

This BUM (big ugly maple) blew down in the early fall.  There a few short saw logs and firewood but it is in a PIA place to get it out.  It was an eyesore from the trail so I cut it up and will probably just leave it.  Was hoping the roots would flop back over when cut the 28 inch base but it stood fast, maybe it will as ground thaws.                                                                                                                                                                IMG_0981.jpgIMG_0986.jpg
