I'm looking to cut a few loads of poplar, and need it hauled about 20 miles to the mill. Any idea on a fair price for trucking?

Probably going to pay by the hour on a short haul like that.  Around here it would run under the minimum billing of $250 or so.

Thanks. Hoping it would be less, but that's about what I was guessing. This will be the first time I an cutting for a paper mill. I've heard they'll take poplar down to a 3" top, but what length do they want?

Depends on which mill. Rumford likes multiples of 4'12' min. Jay likes multiples of 8'. And I don't think sappi really cares much. If you are cutting for a tri axle truck I just cut it 24' that works for everyone.

Who owns the one in Farmington? They chip for Rumford? They like 24 feet,I think. I sold some last year to them.

I'm equal distance to Jay and Rumford so it doesn't matter which one. Thanks for the info in the lengths. I'll call the mill to make sure I know before I cut. One more question... How does the payment work with the paper mills. When I cut for a local sawmill, we hauled the wood ourselves with a one ton. If I'm paying to have this hauled, forr the mill pay the trucker for the load and he passes it along or do I need an account with the mill and get mailed a check and I pay the trucker? Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to thegame and trying to make some money off my property

Being you only got a few loads, you will have to deal with the trucker. Mills won't set up contracts for a few loads a year. You can call one of the local truckers and he can help you out.
