Watering down logs

Drove past a small saw mill, either in southern minnesota or southern wisconsin last week and saw a yard sprinkler on a stack of logs.  Would they be washing off sand or mud that was on the logs??  This is the only thing I can come up with, but then, I ain't no logger.  Just curious.

keep them wet and it keeps the stain and fungus to a minimum... less degrade in the logs before they are used...they even do that at the papermill here.

Well, the real answer was posted too quickly, I was going to say that it makes them grow more while in the yard.  ;D

Also keeps powder post beetles to a minimum in ash logs.  They're the only ones I've seen sprayed in our area.  It was at a handle plant where they had only ash. 
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

They used to store white pine in holding ponds years ago to prevent blue staining. They can't anymore in Maine.
