Title: Echo cs 346
Post by: pitbull on December 27, 2006, 04:14:51 PM
Hi I am new to this forum, but have been luking for quite a while. I bought a new Echo 346, according to the manual it says not to adjust the carb until you get two hours running time. It doesn't wind out like my other saws. I looked at the carb and it looks like you need a special tool to adjust it. I have read that many people break out the little red tabs, because most run lean. It also doesn't idle. Do I need a special tool and if necessary how do you break those little red tabs? They look to be flush with the surface.

Thanks in advance

Pit

Welcome to the Forestry Forum!

If you really want to do that you can most likely just remove the stops on the limiter caps and leave the caps attached.
If this is a new saw it should have some break-in time.
The warranty will most likely be void as well if the caps are removed.

All the new Echo's are too lean out of the box thanks to our pals at the EPA and there is not enough adjustment to compensate. The ears can be ground off to allow it to be richened, just don't quote me when the pollution police show up  ;D

It  would be a lot better to grind those tabs off and adjust it a little rich for breakin than to burn it up running lean.   Steve

QuoteIt doesn't wind out like my other saws.

This doesn't sound like a lean condition.

Kevin  Your right sound too rich the way it's described. Guess I didn't read his post too good.  I'm use too most new Echo's being to lean out off the box.  Steve

I got my grandson a new saw for xmass and looked at the carb setting  and it takes a diffent tool, not  a small straight slot. But some kind stare werench , like a internal torkwernch. I have a 1,000,000 werenchs already, but none fit. Looks like pitbull had the same problem. Dose  the  saw people have a comment?      Thank you very much.  ( i hope  they will)

It is a special tool only the dealers have so that the public can't mess with the adjustment ::)

Don't know about that saw but on my huskies all yu have to do is a little fenangling with needle nose to remove all the plastic stuff off the adjustment screws and you end up with a simple slot . . . but make sure you first know HOW to make the adjustment not just how to access it.

I asked my local Echo dealer if I could buy the tool for taking the tabs out, he would not do it. So I pulled them out, they a quarter inch or so above the adjustment screws. The saw was actually running very rich, I turned the Hi screw in one full turn and at that point it runs very nice. Each quarter turn in the rpm's increased.

Now I am no saw mechanic but someone mentioned that it's one thing to get access to the adjustment screws and it's another to know how to adjust them. Well I have a Hi and low adjuster, what is the right way to adjust them?

You should use a tachometer.

A little off topic...

Deep down I really really love equipment manufacturers and all the little tricks theyl ike to play on us.  First we had torx but on nooo thats not enough lets put tamper proof torx on stuff like fuel pumps on CAT engines so you have to buy yet more tools.  did those silly manufacturers really think that we would not be able to figure out that all we had to do was spend more money on yet another specialized tool?

When I get to redesign the universe:

Every other engineer will be publicly hung so as to motivate the remaining engineers to incorporate reality into vehicular and other design.

There will be one and only one saw chain (length will vary of course), one bolt thread, one pipe thread, one unit of measure and well you get the idea.

PB

Sounds a little (if not a lot) like what Stalin did in Russia.........not that I don't agree with your frustration on the 'tamper proof' screws.  :)

Pitbull, Mr. Kevin is being very frugal with his information maybe because of liability. All the info you need is here in the archives.

PBL, the best form of government is a benevolent dictatorship. the dictatorship is the easy part they are a dime a dozen (they just hung one recently); it's the benevolent part that is hard to come by.  :D
