Title: pushing the mill, and the miller.
Post by: paul case on January 04, 2012, 06:06:42 PM
The last 3 weeks I have been helping a friend out with filling some orders. He has gotten orders for more than he can cut so he lets some out to me.
3x4-10' by the hundred. I bundle them in 25's. This is today's hundred. I have gotten to cut 450 so far.

These cants will be used to ship water or fuel tank parts. PC

I cut this hundred in 6 hours last night, out of small logs. only 2 made 12 each.

Keep in mind, manual mill and I do my own logging. PC

Good going Paul, if you were almost 60 like me you'ld get out about 10 or 15 in 6 hours.     Steve

Thanks Paul,

Hi Paul, I have some questions. But first let me say thanks for the pictures and good looking lumber and I hope you are getting paid well for those 3x4s. I know how much work that is on a manual mill, I have a Norwood and I've sawed a number of 3x3s and 4x4s and I also do my own logging. I'd say you have done well to saw a hundred in six hours.

What kind of wood are those 3x4s? Did you log the trees for that lumber? Are you going to do more?

You're lucky. It's a good friend who will share his work.    Ralph

You shouldn't have any trouble getting to sleep. :)

Paul needs to set the date on his camera before he goes to sleep.   :D

Paul, the amount of lumber you produce with your manual mill is amazing.

White, post, and red oak lumber.
They do pay pretty well for what they are.
I sorta did the logging on these. They came from a construction site for a bank going in about 6 miles from my farm. I had to go pick up the logs. They cut and loaded them for me.
Most generally I cut load and haul.
I just cut the cants out of the log in 6 hours. I did not do the logging in that amount of time too.

A point I may have failed to make is how important it is to befriend those in the same business. I would have totally missed out on this if I hadn't.

The camera date is wrong. It should read 1-4-2012. my bad. PC

Getting to cut something like that with the old Belsaw would be a riot.Just as long as you are not the offbearer that could be a busy place to be

I agree CC.  My Belsaw could use the workout like that but I am not sure I could.

Gday

Thats good going there on a manual band mill Paul just on 1000bft per run not counting recovery Mate  ;) ;D ;D 8) 8)

I use to cut about 25000 to 35000 bft of 3x3 3x4 4x4" dunnage like that every week in both hardwood and softwood at one mill I worked at on a regular basis we where expected to saw 5000 to 6000bft  + of it per day on average and block stack it on the green chain on our own  ;) that was With a One Man  Circular Mill like this one
