I'd test some low concentrated dawn type dish soap on one pedal and see if that helps. Increase soap amounts slowly. It'll change the surface tension and hopefully the pedal will the release the sawdust. 
On the relationship part. If she's super upset about it, I can see storm clouds on your horizon. It was an innocent mistake. Actually it wasn't even a mistake. It's just of life.
