I've got to admit, I don't have the best looking shop in the country, but I can say that I know where everything is and whether someone has been in there while I'm gone.
The smartest small shop that I've ever seen was only about 14' wide. It was just a long skinny building, but the lawn mower repair buisness turned it into a very efficeint work space. On each side along the walls was solid shelves. The first shelf started at around 3' from the floor. This allowed for large heavy items such as air compressor, engines ect. to be on the floor and the other items could be stored up higher.
There were about four, 4' X 8' work benches in the center, spaced out to allow walk around space. The distance to find something on a shelf was usually just a step away.
I've never seen a more organized small shop than this ......... unless you all know of one. ;)
All of the organized shops I've ever seen were somebody else's.

Got them beat my shop/shed is only 10' x 10' and about half is and storage and workbench.
Going to start to build my mill in there. Very tight place.

If you want to see DISORGANIZED come and look at my shop. I didn't know you could store that much junk in an 18x24 shop and still have room to work on a car. ;D
Now, a bunch of you have done seen my "shop," which is just a pole shed with tin nailed up on 3 sides. There is no floor, except for the dirt, and rain water flows through it in wet weather. It contains all of my woodworking and mekanikin tools, along with the beergerator and a bunch of other stuff, within the 25x25 boundaries.
Last year, a guy I didn't really know brought me some free logs, so I offered him a cold beer. When I got the brews from the beergerator and turned around to him, he was standing there with his mouth agape. "Man, you're a lot more organized than I am!" he said. I'm thinkin' this guy must be the king of the slobs! :D :D :D

Your shop was mucho organized realitive to my catchall. Mine is SOOOOOO bad, I'm building another just to keep from having to straighen out the one I have :o
Mines full of sawdust and shavings and cutoff boards. But, I clean it up after each project. That in itself is a choir. But mines in a barn and it's not even half the width of the barn, maybe 35 x 12 feet and 7-1/2 foot ceiling. Sure heats up quick. ;D

13' x 60' with 7 1/2' ceilings. The back 14' is wood storage. Then you come forward to the work benches (old kitchen cabinets) and you have to walk on and around more wood piles. Come forward to machine area and you need to walk on and around more piles of wood to each machine.
All around the shop are projects in various stages of completion. One of which is a Noah's Arc that's been under constuction for three years. How long did Noah take to make his? :D I have a hard time doing just one thing all the way through. When I was a kid, they called that an attention problem, but now, I call it multi-tasking. :)
Some times I just can't stand the clutter any more and I put things away. Mostly, I believe that is just a procrastination tactic to finishing things.
Oh, well I ain't mentioned the wood piles. That's what's in the rest of the barn, upstairs and down. Both firewood and lumber. ;D :D

My shop's a complete mess. I get moments of frustration, like tonight, where I pick a random corner and start cleaning it up. There are a lot of roundtuits in my shop. Just tonight, in fact, I was thinking of making a list of everything in my shop that needs a home, that doesn't have a home. Once I finished that list, I'd make sure I either built something or bought something to store everything on the list.
Who wants to bet on that ever happening? :D

I had not really thought of it in that light before, but in reading this thread, I looked in my own mind's eye to see what my shop looked like. I couldn't find it. :D
There is one back here now that is so full of stuff to be fixed, that I cringe in even thinking about it. It is a very small shop.
And then there is another shop here that begs to have the sawdust eliminated to find some of the tools, so as to take stock, so as to not replicate for some upcoming projects, and to transport to one of the other shops with more room. Sort of.
My shop was really neat & well organized for years, then I bought the place. ::)
It's been a downhill battle since then. :D
But I do know where everything is, it's in the shop..........someplace.
I can't usually lay my hands on it straight off, but I know it's in there somewhere. :-X

I spent a great deal of time laying out my shop before I built it, I know what the primary use would be and placed the equipment for maximum efficiency utilizing every square foot, the bench top and floor sweeps incorporated into the dust collection system makes daily clean up a breeze.
YA RIGHT...........the truth is I barely have a path for my wife to get to her car.

She must have. She won't let any reading material out of the house. (Or atleast she thinks so.) :D She says I am to be working in there not doing other things like reading. If thats the way she wants it I guess I won't be able to take my drawings and notes for Critter out there. Oh well, it could be worse. Like a cerfew or sompin' ;) ;)
I cleaned the lower half ofmy barn after 12 years, I know where some stuff is now, I also took 1000lbs of crap to the dump. Ialso was able to put my boat inside for the 1st time in 5 years. 8) i was trying to make room in my leanto so i could buy a mill and start milling, then I broke my heal. My wife loved after the ice storm here, it was the 1st time in 10 years she got her car under a roof. :D

I've got 2 more bikes on shelves, basket cases. Most everything is there except the drive to put them together. I figure to sell off all of them but my baby [84 shovelhead] to buy the equiptment I will need in the woods. Everytime I look at that 03 Roadking in the picture I see a tractor smiley_whacko
Shop looks somewhat clean as my father was here over the holiday's and I didn't want to listen to him for 3 weeks about having a dirty shop. Give me about 2 more weeks and it will be back to the normal obstickle course. Man I can't spell.

Why do you need 4 harleys? Maybe you can get ONE to work! :D This of course from the guy with a severe case of MBS. I have had up to 8 at the start of spring before. I usually pick a few up over the winter, tinker with them, and put some up for sale come spring. After of course trying them out a few times!
My great-grandfather was a pretty good example on organization. Every tool always in its place, every nut, nail, bolt, washer, string, fitting, in a container and labeled and put back when not in use. He could walk in, pick up each thing he would need for a job, and start working in moments. At the end of the day the shop was swept out, rubbish removed, and everything put back into place. Mind boggling to me! I guess a lifetime of military living would have its effects. My garage looks like a bomb went off most of the time. I know a big part of it is I have too many projects going at once, bikes apart over here, a cabinet to finish over there, chainsaws waiting for lost parts on the bench, complete chaos. Of course putting the tools away would help make the next project go smoother, but when you caome back to one how are you going to remember you need a 4.4mm allen head wrench to put that bolt back in place... I am trying to pick up more between and after projects more now and have found it is actually a much better way to work. Not spending 20 minutes searching for the ratchet you left under a set of used tires helps make your project go smoother. I got so disgusted one time I went and bought a new set of metric 1/4 drive sockets because I got tired of looking for them. Next week I found em under the hood of the Opel, where I was planning on putting the carbuerator back on.... Such is life. I did go buy a dozen 22 gallon rubbermaid totes for projects organization. I can fit just about everything I need when working on something into it if I have to wait to get a part or tool. When I get back to it no nuts or bolts have wandered off and in the meantime the workbench is clear for other things. You can fit a straight 6 engine completely dismantled into a rubbermaid tote! Its tough getting it on the shelf though.
Turns out Raider Bill lives about 3 miles up the road from me. Wonder if he's every had someone break into his shop and LEAVE stuff? :D :D I can't wait to see what his plans are for his acreage. I'll have a shop that big once I get up to the country in SC. I've always dreamed of a 4 car garage with a small house out back. I'm getting closer to that every day!

This house / shop was my dream, pretty much cost a marriage but a small price to pay for so much fun. She just didn't understand. Oh well like they say in the barber shop.......... next
I put up the flag as soon as the roof went on, I moved it so anyone driving by could see a american lived here when the OHD was open.
It took 3.5 years to get approved by the city, there was all kinds of issues, even the local paper and TV stations got involved. One Commisiner told me that I would get my shop over his dead body, he was not reelected.
I also built a 350 sqft outdoor kitchen and a 800 sqft sports/football room at the same time. Total project 2395 sq ft addition. BAsically the house is 5200 sqft, with 4 bathrooms, 3 kitchens and one bedroom, how's that for bacholer living? I count the shop as living space.
