I am sure there are a lot of factors, but how long before the spalting begins? What if a tree is dead but still standing? Does Magnolia spalt? I'll hang up and listen. Thanks.
You'll find quite a few pics of spalted magnolia on my site
My prettiest spalted hackberry comes from standing dead trees cut when the bark is falling off.
Rick,
Magnolia and yellow poplar both spalt readily, but can also turn to rot fast. I have seen it happen in only a few months when it is blazing hot, humid, and wet. I would think that a Spring, Summer, and Fall down here in Georgia would be about right. I recently covered some pecan logs sawn down in February with wet planer shavings to see if they will spalt between now and the end of the year.
