Title: How Not to get logs

Wasn't me, but I am proud of whoever did it! And, thanks to my buddy Hoss, who took the pic. I was proud of him, because he said he THOUGHT of me, when he took the pic!

They had to CUT the tongue off of the truck, because AFTER they went into the rest area, and came out and TRIED to go, it had ALL fallen down! The tongue was all kinked up.

Say, how many logs can you get into a VW bus?

Hey SD,

How did you know I had an old Ford Bronco that had 243,000 + miles on it before everything started leaking at once?  Had that thing for 13 years before it basically gave up on me.

:o A friend of mine says that whether you go to college or learn the hard way, educations cost money. ;) :D

I don't know what kind of pine that is, if it was around here, it would be red pine. Not exactly as light as white. ;)

From the height of the uprights they could have been planning on a bigger load. :o  Or maybe they lost some already. ::)  One question, did they pull their plate on the trailer?  Maybe they are going to cut their losses and run. :D

Now if we could only find the owner and obtain the correct wieght, we could take guesses on the wieght. The one closet to the correct wieght could win a prize. :D

Anyone know what the fine is in MI for being over height?

Title: Re: How Not to get logs
Post by: Reddog on March 13, 2008, 10:08:29 PM
Well Furby,
After he sees you have a CDL.
I would say the ticket would read,No permit. No signing for oversized load. No lead car with a strike pole. No lead car with signage. No lead car with warning lights. No chase car with signage. No chase car with warning lights.
Now to the load. No signage on the load. No strike bar on the tow vehicle. Non DOT approved tie downs. Load not properly secured. (You never win on that one with odd loads)

I would say close to 5K if he wanted to be a

But if you are a happy home owner with no CDL. He shakes his head, and says don't let me see this again.   :D
Title: Re: How Not to get logs
Post by: Furby on March 13, 2008, 10:37:47 PM
Yeah, the CDL is the stick point. :-\
I don't fall under any of the above other than the 13'6" height limit.
So that and probly not agreeing with my tie downs would be it.
I cut it to 8' wide and over hang is not counted.
No permit needed 8' and under.
Signage on building/vehicle needed over 8' wide as well as permit.
No escort, light bars and such until you are over 12' wide.
No permits issued for anything over 13'6" or over 14' wide (overhangs not included) based on what I read on the state site, yet I see loads larger than that in MI several times a year. ::)

Permits are need for anything over 13'6" , you can move up to 16' high with permits and predetermined route.
Escorts are required on over heigth permits. With signage and lights being required.
A moblie home can be up to 16' wide.

Sunday night is good time to move that load on back roads. ;)

Had to go look Reddog as that still didn't sound right.
You are correct on over 13'6" is allowed by permit, but the limit is 15' high and 16' wide.
Close enough. :)
My main problem is the 1.5 ton truck. Don't have access to one that has a ball hitch and electric brakes on it.

Well round two was even more interesting. ::)
Pulled in and saw this:

You can see half the building is missing and the only way for that missing piece to have been moved, is from the side.
So WHY would you park the equipment right next to the remaining piece ???
Made some calls to get someone out as I wanted to get it moved.
Was hoping that when someone showed up to move the equipment that we could use the sky trak to load and save me time and effort. ;) ;)
Young fellow shows up.
You need them both moved ???
Yeah, I gotta pull the trailer in from the side.
Oh, I don't have the keys.
>:( Thinking to myself...... WHY would you drive over here with out the keys ???
Well I can't get it out any other way I told him.
He found a key for the excavator and moved it, but the sky trak is a rental and he don't have a key. ::)

Ended up jacking up the other half and moving the trailer in by hand as I just couldn't clear my supports on an angle.

Ready to go!
I was taking back roads wherever possible, but I had to cross the river and there is only one bridge for miles and that is right through town and at the base of the biggest hill we have for miles. ::)
Only have three major intersections on the route though.
At the first major intersection yesterday, a fire truck/rescue truck showed up with lights on and siren blowing.
What do you expect with the fire house and police station two blocks away. ::)
Same intersection today, a cop was waiting to turn. :-\
Never even looked at me or rather, made sure not too look at me. ;) ;D

Made it to the back roads and there sits an unmarked in a driveway with an officer talking to someone.
Looked at me, but didn't come after me. :)
Was heading to the last major intersection and trying to time the light and a flock of Turkeys decide to cross in front of me.
I missed dinner. :-\
Then I was coming up to my road and there is a school on the corner.
I could see some fire trucks in the parking lot along with lots of other cars.
Made it to the corner and almost couldn't get down the street as cars were lining both sides of the road.
Lots of cops and firemen as well from a couple of other local cities.
Several officers looked at me, but didn't do anything. :D
Not sure what was going on, but I guess I missed a meeting or some other special event.

Both pieces are home, so phase one is complete.
Phase two is moving them 70 miles up to the lake, 60+ of them being highway miles.
I think I need to use a heavier vehicle and one with electric brakes.  ;)

Good move Furby.
Looks like your foundation work was patterned after Arky's... ;D ;D ;D

But I know you had it all worked out down to the last detail....'cept for not getting the keys to the sky trak. But then, your system might have been easier on the building.

Good luck on the remainder of the trip.  :)

Furby, that is funny. :D I went through something similar moving a 1000 gallon fuel tank. The cop gave me a good look but probably did not want to get involved. Good thing for me.

Looks like major over load for the poor old trailer  :-\ maybe two 2500 lb axles ? might be time to up grade  ;)
Title: Re: How Not to get logs
Post by: Furby on March 16, 2008, 09:16:43 PM
Well actually, that's not my trailer. ::) :D
It has a 7k gross and I counted and measured everything on the building and estimated the total weight of the building at around 4200 pounds.
Turns out that the floor joists were 4x4 instead of 2x4 like I figured, and they were a little wetter than planned from the snow melt, but not as bad as they could have been.
So I need to add a little to that figure.
Anyways, the building was split in half, and while the half with the doors was a little heavier, neither half should be over 2500 pounds.
The springs hardly settled at all like I had counted on to reduce the height. :-\
The major issue was the fact that it was top heavy because I left the shingles on for now, due to the fact that it will be a few months before I can move it up to the lake. Shingles added around 375 pounds to the roof.

All in all it really went MUCH better than I had planned considering I did the entire thing alone. :)

A friend of mine was visiting a shop that made custom furniture. There was a set of double doors at the end of a hallway, and they popped open and rather large individual backed his way through it carrying a huge chest of drawers. Someone offered to help him and he said no thanks, it's DanG hard enough by myself. :D

didja know if ya drop a 3000lb log 8 inches onto a 5000lb trailer deck, that it will throw a full can of
mountain dew sitting on the tongue about thirty yards?   oops.

never mind, you can tell me the story some time over a pop.  Thats some funny stuff right there!  Are you sure your not from the UP?

Now, the only wonder I have is why is that log still sitting over there?  Since your so dang smart, why'nt ya figure out how much it weighs and I'll see if I can pick it up with my FEL and we'll go move it.  I'll have to see if I can find the pics of my 8000#GVW trailer with about 14,000#s of logs sitting on it.

Hey, d'ja ever here that your only supposed to tow 7000#s with a toyota tundra?   :D

I've had 7k rolling behind that Explorer. ::)

You could move the butt of that log as it's in four pieces, it's the second log that still weighs a lot. :-\
Plan to mill it right there.............. when all the cards come together at some point.

Dave,
Back when I was getting rid of busted concrete the hard way (before Stump Jumper brought the loader and dump trailer down), I was unloading the big pieces the same way.
Long as she was coupled, every thing was fine.
Uncoupling was touch and go.
Almost took out my rear window one time. :-\
With that much overhang on that trailer, I can see a head popping of real easy, but just catching the tounge across the gut hurts like heck! :o :'(
