We use to call it Polk weed, purple ish stem and deep purple berries. Remember spraying it as a weed.

I thought that was toxic to humans?
Never killed me yet. I do boil it twice before eating. It can give you the runs, or so I've heard, if you don't. Others have said they've never had an issue with it.

That was the first I had heard of the stuff, never seen it. Have heard it it is quite toxic if not properly prepared, I have to wonder how your ancestors learned how to make it edible.
The story I get on who learned to eat it first was Native Americans. They used medicinally.

Interesting read.
Article references mayapple toxicity and edibility, and I've experienced both. I knew better than to eat them, but when drying a huge batch of roots in an abandoned house I inhaled enough fumes off of mayapple leaves and roots to get sick. The fruits are excellent, something similar to a pawpaw, but very difficult to find since the birds and turtles and critters of all sorts will get them first.
My wife's granny, Norsie, drank pokeberry juice every year for whatever health reasons she had. She lived to 90+ and knew most all the medicinal plants in the woods and fields of E KY. She also ate the greens when they were young enough to not be toxic. One of our son's is vegan and has been eating elderberries which are not toxic but not that i find them a flavor I like either. They are something of a fetish in recent years for some nutritional thing. My aunt made jelly from them which was OK, not great IMO.
I'll stick with collard or kale greens.
If Mayapples were money I'd be a rich man...

..... But for a truly unforgettable (and Cringe-worthy) rendition, google "2 1/2 Men Mia sings in recording studio"- where Charlie's old girlfriend needs his help to launch her "singing" career. A very funny (in a sad way) segment that highlights what some of us sound like at Karaoke....
