Hey guys, im sure Ill get bashed but Ive searched alot of got different chemicals but I figure Id sign up here and ask. I got my pines and other trees cut around my house (wish I didnt cause I loved the privacy but the trees were getting so big they were falling and eventually fall on the house). Been a good 4 years sense then and the cut over is crazy big, I got plenty of pines growing back naturally. Had a guy come out about replanting but he said being the size of the lot it wouldnt be worth it and its growing back naturallly by itself really well. And for me to come back around this time now, and spray some chemical that kills everything except the pines and stuff. I got a milwaukee powered backpack spray coming in the mail was curious what to order/mix and put in this bad boy and begin spraying? Thanks! Heres a pic of the cut over. Wanna clean up areas in it and put my pontoon boat or a green house etc,

Garlon 3 if you want to mix with water. Garlon 4 if you're mixing with diesel. Anything with triclopyr will do pretty well.

Edit:  I missed the part about pines. Forget the garlon. There's something to do what you're asking, but I'm not up on that. Someone will chime in shortly with the real answer.

Where are you?  That could impact what is available for use.  What species are you dealing with?  If this is in southern pine territory, the goto tank mix for me is 16 ounces of Arsenal AC (imazypyr) + 2 ounces of Escort (metsulfuron methyl) applied per acre plus an appropriate release surfactant.  This can go over top of your pines late in the growing season.  Applying the correct rate is critical as too much chemical will stunt your pines.  This will control the hardwood component.

Another option is directional spray with a non-selective herbicide (Roundup).  Just spray what you want controlled.  Don't get it on your crop trees.  Use a dye in your tank mix to see what you have sprayed.

Just realized wudman if your in keysville your right up the road from me, I work in Lunenburg.

Wudman

I live in Lunenburg.  That rate will work for you.

Right on, Im sure Ive seen you around, been working at lunenburg schools for 15 years now.

think Tractor Supply in south hill has that arsenal stuff or do I gotta order online?

Wudman

Arsenal is the forestry use product.  You will probably have to get it online.  I'm using Imazapyr 4SL.  It's one of the generics and a bit cheaper.

Just to be on the safe side this is it right?

Arsenal Applicators Concentrate Herbicide | Forestry Suppliers, Inc.

And this wont murder the pine trees growing? (Not spraying on them directly anyway). When I first bought/moved here 7 years ago it was sea ticks EVERWHEREEE. I couldnt walk from my house to my shop without my and my little beagle covered in them, so I sprayed the field with malathion and it worked amazing. Aint had one for 6 years and their now starting to coming back, so was gonna go ahead and spray malathion again in my grass/yard while this stuff gets shipped. (Wanna get the 4.5 gallon cause of a discount and if this works gonna go do alot more other places like my parents to help them out)

Claybraker

Yep that's the stuff. Here's the generic https://www.keystonepestsolutions.com/imazapyr-4sl-forestry-53-herbicide-2-5-gallon-replaces-arsenal-ac-polaris-ac-163

Kills most everything except the pines and brambles. Escort controls the brambles, but I like a few brambles for the wildlife benefit.  Dye is optional, I looked like a smurf when I used it.  Next up is technique.   For hand application with a back pack sprayer look into the "waving wand" technique.

mike_belben

i just wanna throw out there.. insecticides kill everything, including the bees that pollinate the world, and the organisms that feed the birds that bring the seeds and dragonflies that eat the house flies, the crawly things that play a critical role in soil humus creation and keep your lawn and plants from disease etc etc.  what you fix with a chemical is likely to come with a number of unadvertised future issues.

i had a huge tick problem for years and came close to spraying my whole world.  what solved it was outdoor dogs on nexgard spectra.  the dogs go through all the brushiest little cubbies and nooks doing what dogs do, and the ticks get on them, bite and die because the dog is pickled full of fipronyl or whatever the active ingredient is.  it only took a summer to break the life cycle and now i cant find ticks anymore.  so consider rescuing a sick looking wandering stray, its already accustomed to outdoor conditions, not spoiled, and a vermin harvesting machine.  the dog is probably already miserable with parasites and looking for food.  if you feed it the dog will not leave.  give this mangey, bald, rat tail looking poor beast a double dose of nexgard and 3 weeks of tetracycline from your local co-op (was $18 this summer) and youll have a low cost 24hr tick and vermin controller.  all 3 of my dogs were such cases and all 3 are beautiful loving mutts now in one awesome pack having a much better life than they were destined for. mine never been to the vet.

some encouragement.. it gives you more than just tick relief.

Ya thats why Im doing it, FOR my doggos, they come back covered, (How I got them as well, stray and I created a nice little family out of them haha). And thanks for the wand technique, Ima be looking like bubble boy before its over with. Haha. Thanks everyone, Ill keep ya updated on the progress.

mike_belben

well then i applaud you for that.  try the nexgard.  a dog covered in ripe raisinettes with legs will have them all dried up and falling off in 2 days.  no they dont pay me for the endorsement but they sure ought to!

my wife gets it in the mail from australia.  does heartworm and all that stuff too. magic.

I got bad news, *DanG milwaukee sprayer new in box arrived, DOA, didnt work at all, so glad i tested with water and not the expensive stuff.

Anyone recommend a really good battery powered sprayer? Comfy as well?

Also heres a pics of my doggos :D

I'm not convinced battery powered does any good, considering the extra weight. Only so much you can do to relieve the suffering of a beast of burden. Other than reducing the weight.

"Solo" brand products are pretty much the industry standard.  The 416-Li or 417-Li are the lithium battery powered models.  I personally would not go that route.  The hand-pump backpack models are easy to use and will run as long as the man can keep moving.  Good Luck.

We had terrible luck with Solo backpacks filled with glyphosate.  The stuff would turn to "snot" in the bottom of the tank.  Then you had to get the pressure tank out from inside the main tank to unclog.  We had brand-new sprayers failing the day of purchase.

But....our tap water is quite "hard", i.e. full of minerals and relatively high pH, so that seems to have been a factor.

Get a Stihl GP-20 backpack and you'll never look back.  Don't clog, pressure tank is external (smart), and all in all, a much better tool.

Battery power ain't no thing;  A few pumps on the handle as you're spraying or walking is simply not a problem.

Me?  I've probably sprayed thousands of gallons of glyph. thru backpacks by now.  Maybe tens or even hundreds of thousands.  But I forgot to keep track lol!

I bet your efficacy was a bit off too.  Glyphosate (and many forestry use chemicals) is fairly sensitive to pH.  The active gets bound up in the minerals and sediment.  I have carried around a test kit to check batch water.  It is one of the major reasons for chemical failures.

Ah, we're old hands at this stuff.  I must have read of that-pH effects on spray solution in what, 1980?

Never had the stuff not work.

BTW, if anyone wants to do cut-stump or basal-bark work on any type of maple-in my case it would only ever be box elders, the junk maple-don't bother with glyphosate.  It won't work.  May as well just reach for the old standby-triclopyr, AKA Garlon.

I had one tank turn to snot (technical term) but I blamed the surfactant. My only gripe with the SOLO products is the harness leaves much to be desired.
