I live in Niagara County NY which is loaded with white ash trees infested with the borers. There are a couple of trees near me that are infested that I would like to cut down. I would like to conduct a little experiment to see if the larva would die if the trees were chainsaw girdled now and then cut down later in the summer when it is much drier. I don't want any bugs to escape. I would like the buggers to stave.

Would the trees die quick enough in the spring to kill the larva? ???

Short answer: No

Long answer: Early science indicated EAB was attracted to distressed Ash trees.

One method employed to detect the presence of EAB was to girdle (cause distress to) select trees  spaced across a wide area in the spring / early summer. The crew would return the following late fall / winter, fell the tree, and strip the bark using draw knives, examine the cadmium layer, and collect larvae if present. Finding live larva was not uncommon.
