How do you identify a Husqvarna 266xp chainsaw? I know that they have xp on top and side covers, but can you tell by serial number plate?

Yes you can tell from ID plate.  Should have 266 in top row.

My problem is that I would like to purchase a used 266xp. I have a 266se which I purchased new. I bought a 266 on ebay that was sold as a 266xp. It had an xp top cover. It had 266se on the data plate. It doesn't have any more power than my original 266se. That is the reason for my original question.

I owned 9 266 XP's, a couple 630's, 1, 630 Super

The 266 XP, 66.7 cc, 4.1 cu.in, 4.5 hp
The 266 SE/SG, 66.7 cc, 4.0 cu.in, no hp rating ?

I used swap parts between the 266 Husqvarna and the 630 Jonsereds, fuel tank, head and pistons.
The 266's were pretty good, little things, chock rod fill off, off/on switch quit working, muffler came lose, when hot took 2 full pulls to start and don't stay in the throttle to long, it will score the piston. I was a Husky, Johnie man for about 15 yrs.
The Jonsereds are a more steady eddie saw, i had, 601's, 621's, 751's, 80's and the 90's.
I had a couple 162's before the 266's, the 162 had more throttle response then the 266, it was a nice limbing saw, but again you couldn't keep a muffler
on it. I had to replace the head because of the muffler bolts striping out.
I had a 65 Husky and a couple 480's these were tough saaws.
Third generation logger, owner operator, 30 yrs felling experience with pole skidder. I got my neck broke back in 89, left me a quad. The wife kept the job going up to 96.

Thanks for the info. I am a hobby wood cutter.I don't intend to make a living at it. I cut wood to heat the house and keep me in some decent physical condition. Still looking for answer to identification question.

My old 266 xp had 266 xp on the metal tag. It's likely somebody replaced the original top cover w/ one from an Xp.If you're looking for more power get one of the guys here to port or muffler mod it for you.You could probably do muff mod yourself though.

I'm in the market for a bigger saw to cut my firewood with is kinda my hobby, I love it. I have had a Husky 50 for years and have cut countless truck loads of wood with it and its showing it age. I have found a 266 for $200 locally and was wondering If I should jump on it or shop around. The same guy has a 162 for $150 also.
