Yessir, unless I am trimming small stuff my goto saws are a 461 and a 576 and both wear 20" bars the vast majority of the time.

Yep. My 372 wears a 20 most of the time. There's a 28 on the shelf in case I need it,  but that's not very often.

I am the same way I run a 20 inch on my 461 and on my Makita. A twenty inch bar will do most of my cutting. We did get the 660 with the thirty six inch bar out Saturday to take down a big elm. That's the first time the 660 has been running since last fall.

From the 455 Rancher on up 20's out sell every other size combined by a considerable margin. Occasionally I put a 20" on a 550. Some guys will buy 24's on the 70cc saws, but I'm only talking 1 out of every 10 saws.

But the concept of the ideal/main saw makes it hard for the collector/hobby types like me to enjoy ourselves. As you build the case to put one saw on the top of the pyramid, everything below it gets dinged for one nitpicking fault or another. The wrong clutch, the wrong handle angle, the wrong cylinder, not enough power, too much weight, too much vibration, choke lever is in the wrong place, doesn't start on Thursdays, makes my feet hurt...on and on. I'm more of a "glass half full" type, so I just enjoy a saw for what it is and not think too much about what it isn't.

Might be a fun thing to kick around over coffee tomorrow morning, eh Walt? Probably have a couple of them on the truck.  :)

@Spike60

I'm looking at doing carbon fiber inserts like Sondre. What bar lengths would you say are more or less popular? I have a line on a bunch of 32" discounted. Thanks

What's popular here and there are likely 2 different things, right? I don't sell a lot of 32's. It's a "tweener" size between the 28 and 36. Will occasionally see one go out on a 572, but more likely on a 90cc saw as it's less nose heavy than the 36". In most cases, a 32" on a 70cc saw is going to be an occasional use thing where a guy runs into something big once in a while, but not often enough to run out and buy a 395.

But a good deal; yeah, I'd grab them. Especially in this climate where there are shortages on almost everything.

I just spent the week trying to find any bar over 20". Nobody has anything and don't even know when more are coming in. I called way in up to the big city and they had ONE last 24" . I told them to hold it for me and 2 chains immediately. Hard to say when I will be able to pick up more bars. I need a 28 and 36

@spike60 yes, you're right...it's like an 80-90cc bar, which is kind of a tweener saw size.  Seems like I read somewhere the 32" was made for the 288 or something. I have a 32" Stihl bar I got cheap and fixed for my 395. That bar is heavy, but I like the length. Feels heavier than the Oregon 36" LW on the 3120...but I'm sure part of that is the weight of the 3120 balancing it.

@hemlockking I'm sure one could be found online but I don't know how shipping is to Canada. I bought a box a 266 stuff from a guy up there once.

What mount size are you looking for?

I've been running the 24" tsumura lights on my ported 2165/71's. Stock saws 20" and I still have a couple older Oregon 22" bars I run once in a while too.

I think I'm going to order a couple versacut bars like Walt uses and try them out.

This is my preferred combo, both my 365 and 372xp husky's wear 24" bars because I find that if I'm using it to limb or buck smaller stuff it prevents me from having to bend my back much, im not very tall (5'10") but the 4 inch difference between a 24 and a 20 seem to keep my back happy. Also I get alot of wood from a tree company that runs bandit 21xp chippers which take 21" pieces so coincidentally most of the wood you get from them is stuff just slightly too big to chip 22" to 24" and it keeps me from having to cut from both sides.

You use the tool that fits the job, and for the same reason I mostly run 40 - 45cc 13".
But I still enjoy sinking a 28 - 36" to the 80 - 100cc hilt!

Good video Walt.

My "new mint" 1989 044AV with 20" light bar had taken over the main saw duties my 60cc 562XP once had.

On the 562 I then ran a 16" Pro lite bar with 33RS/72LG chain, what a light saber it was for a small wood cleanup saw!
Unfortunately for them they are now in permanent storage,
until some day they return to their duties for someone else.  :)

I think "age" allows us to put things in perspective and run the saw we WANT to run vs. the "smart" choices all the time. My 565 & 560 did most of the work when the temps were up, now going to move back to a mix of 2165 HTSS, L77, and old Jonsered's
