I am designing and building a chainsaw mill which rides on a carriage with a vertical shaft engine driving a jackshaft down to the bar being supported horizontally.  I have a 9-tooth .404 harvester sprocket that is 2" in diameter and an Oregon 42" bar.  From research I have found that if the distance between the bar and the sprocket is too large or the sprocket is too large, there is a problem with chain jumping.  I went with the smallest sprocket I could get, and have cut off the bar so it is 2" wide where the tapper begins.  This puts the center of the sprocket (and of course its 2" outside edge) about two and a half inches from the bar.

The question is, does anyone have experience in this area and can make a guess as to whether or not I will have a problem?  When I finish the design and start building, I plan to put pictures and detailed info about the mill out on the forum so people can (hopefully) benefit from my research.  Thanks.
