Title: The Summer firewood thread.
Post by: 47sawdust on April 12, 2022, 03:47:50 PM
Just kidding. Although living in Vermont a fella told me once he didn't know if he had enough firewood to last all summer.

Went fishing one June with my Dad around Ludlow VERMONT back in the late 60's and woke up to 25 degrees in a cabin with a cold stove. Wound up at the local general store buying warm clothes.

I have a cabin at 10K feet and we have a fire every night during the summer.

When the sun goes down, it cools off fast.

Put in the outdoor boiler in '97.  It's been going 24/7/365 ever since, except the day I installed a new furnace in 2016.  :)

I'm only one generation removed from using wood year around. Everyone up here had wood burning kitchen stoves. In the 70's we saw our first electric ranges in kitchens. We had wood for a furnace in the basement for winter, but we had huge woodsheds that held 15-20 cords of hand split wood. Those adds on TV about ranges in the 50's and 60's?  Yeah right!! :D :D  They were probably gas anyway, no gas lines up here in potato fields and woods. :D None east of Montreal for decades and then it was only on the south coast.

I installed an OWB in 2007. That also has been running just about steady. Shut it down once for a week when we went on vacation.
I have not begun on my summer wood. That kinda gets cuts as needed. I really burn a lot of junk in the summer months. I burn mostly dead stuff anyways, but really get into the dead stuff for the hot water.
But the OWB got just about steady diet of good hard wood for the last 2 years. I am clearing an area to get a better view of the field coming up the road. Looks like it will keep getting good wood for a few more years.
MY FIL once noticed the wood that I was burning at about 20°. He said, You can't burn that stuff!!!!
I told him, Lets go in where it's warm and talk about it.  :D

My summer wood is the same as my winter wood. Since 2009 I have shut the Garn down twice because of leak repairs. I run it year around to heat my domestic. Just backed a three plus cord load up to the Garn barn a week ago that should last into the fall season. I need to get to bucking, splitting and loading some trailers.

Very few around here burn popple and fir, that's mostly what I've burned for 4 years now. I've got all kinds of it to thin out for firewood. Don't plan on making any changes. ;D

Mom's uncle burned only popple in the kitchen stove, for longer than I've been on the planet. :D

I have a guy up the road that told me that I cannot burn pine.  ::)
Yes, in a wood stove it was a bother. But I did it.
Kinda like a big fire than nothing. Fir and white pine act the same.
Hemlock will coal down a little. That was a much better burning wood.
With the OWB that I have both my FIL and neighbor are wrong.  ;)
I can burn softwood steady in the single numbers and I don't notice too many more trips to filling it up vs hard wood.
As one member said, burning softwood there are not many ashes to clean out.
But I do plan on getting started on my winter wood. I am just waiting for that area to dry up better.

I burn up my trash wood in the fire ring in summer time .Kind of nice ,sit around telling tall tales with a barley pop or three .Maybe roast a hot dog now and again . It's a constant battle just picking up the wind blown limbs out of the yard .A little blow will rattle the soft maples but every so often a big blow will rattle the oaks .

Has anyone else thats selling wood found that their customers are ordering extra?  My 2 cord a year people are getting 3, my 4 cord people are getting 5. Sign of the times?

I've burned cords of fir and popple and some spruce. No trouble at all. Love fir and popple, no effort to split, just as easy as white birch. Spruce is not easy, like splitting tamarak. :D   I don't need a fire hear all day in winter, way too hot. :D  Need a smudge here into June. I'd like to see ya see sit around in a 50 or 60 degree house. If it ain't wood it's something else. Didn't say it needs to be all day fire. :D I like to leave a window open at night when mid April arrives. I had 3 windows open last night and it was still 73 in here in the morning. But we are in an abnormal heat wave. It was 53F outside at day break.

I've seen that trend.  People are worried about what's to come.  Higher prices, shortages etc.  Get it now while they can.  Nobody wants to be cold.

Pines are not native to this area of Ohio .However I do have some, maybe a cord and half one of the trimmers dropped off I split for the fire ring .I have no idea what it is but typically limbs every 2 feet in the rounds .It doesn't split all that easy like one would think but with a hydraulic splitter of course you can split anything .It smokes but not that bad .Some of those rounds are a lot more plump than one would think from yard trees ,like 24".
What is a surprise to me is they've laid in a big heap  for 10 plus years and  haven't rotted up like maple ,cherry or red oak would have .

Some of the best heat for a softwood, is red pine. Heavy wood for a softwood and the maul will bounce a few times before she bites when splitting. :D

A lot of hoopla about firewood .if you are selling it of course most people want more bang for their buck like good oak and hickory .The Canadians bragged up hard maple and we once did our ash but that's about all gone now .
If you're burning it and not buying it even swamp willow or cottonwood burns ,it just takes more of it by volume .Cut green these things weigh a ton but will dry about like balsa .Ashes are ashes not worth complaining about IMO .

I have seen this, here it seems to be people that normally burn some wood and some oil, trying to switch to more wood or all wood. Maybe the same in your area? This is increased a bit by the price of firewood not going up as fast as oil, like we aren't burning fuel to cut the trees, buck and split, deliver the wood  :D Had a call the other day asking how much, says another guy has lower prices but no wood right now  ???  ::) and they will maybe get back to me in June  :) best o luck to em the price is the price

Cut up a little "biscuit" wood this afternoon. So called because it last long enough to make a batch of biscuits. All spruce slabs, our favorite kindling wood.
The roller conveyor with the chainsaw pivot works really good.I much prefer it over the pto buzz saw I used before.
The tire bolted to the rock maple block has also become a favorite for splitting kindling or re-sizing splits for the cook stove.
86° here today sun felt good, trees are just starting to leaf out here in central Vermont.

Spruce slabs from my mill. What doesn't go to stove wood becomes a corduroy road.

Fiskar's axe is a keeper. I told my wife we don't have a lawn we have a wood yard, less mowing.

Al, the eastern white pine will last for years in the woods, be it standing or on the ground. I feed my OWB a steady diet of it.
As I say, if it will take together, I haul it out, if it breaks off, I go back and get it.  ;D
That white maple I have, is gone in a few years. I still have some pine stumps form the grown-up pasture that I can't get out. Those maple stumps are long gone.
Oak will last forever, I think.
I did burn some softwood in wood stove, for a couple years, as swampdonkey is doing.
I have a guy up the road that tells me you can't burn softwood in a wood stove.

Just ignore the unindoctrinated and inexperienced. ;D They burn softwood and birch out west by the train loads. I see Cody on Wangler Star channel, he's still waiting from summer out there and feed'n DF in the stove for him and his cat in the shop. ;)

Really good set up Mick. I like that conveyor with the saw pivot. Where do you have the saw bolted? Through the bar or through the bumper spike?

I made a plate for the bottom of the saw from a piece of 3/16th flat stock. 2 holes drilled to match the handle mount, ¾'' square tube welded to the plate.Pivots on piece of cold rolled round which is welded to the conveyor frame.Nothing fancy just a shade tree hack.

Hope this helps.

You can burn anything from swamp willow to ironwood . Pine is not native in this area and what little of it I have gets slowly burned up in my fire ring on one of my patios .The only pine that goes in my stove is just kindling .Hardwood  the more dense it is the longer it burns .i've got three bass woods the wind got this spring I will cut up .Not the best stuff but never the less it is a source of heat .They are large enough for lumber but then what could it be used for other than berry boxes and lettuce crates .Certainly not to frame a barn .
