So I just bought a JD 440b power shift skidder. It runs and starts easy, but it doesn't have a dipstick to check the hydraulic/ transmission fluid level. Right now I'm assuming the fluid is low since the blade won't lift the skidder off the ground. The last owner welded on a section of 4-5" pipe to make it easier to add fluid. I want to be able to check the fluid levels so I was hoping someone could give me the measurements of their dipstick and then I could make a makeshift one for mine. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

If was mine I would & drain and flush reservoir, plus new filter, add back the specified capacity of good fluid. You probably will get an answer here, if not JD dealer, or measure same engines. It would not be unusual if it has a leak. Good luck.

Oh yeah, it's got some leaks. Mostly up by the hydraulic pump, and another one on one of the blade rams. Those are the only ones I found.

I have a 540, not sure if it's the same but the dipstiick is long, like 10-12" long
