so we are trying to get our little homesteading adventure up and going identifying all we have and obtaining all we can. today while checking out a fishing spot near us I found this tree/bush nearby. I plucked a limb for id purposes. it shows many characteristics of elderberry but lacks a couple.
first, a woody stalk unlike water hemlock. the bark however lacked the bumpy bark as what I had recently seen.
second, opposing leaves bright on one side lighter on the other. veins that terminate at the end of the leaf. smooth leaf edge rather than jagged edge as described.
berries that are in an umbrella pattern as I have seen.
any ideas?

With that opposite branching, looks like one of the dogwoods to me.
I believe that it is roughleaf dogwood.
