Title: Going to look at a new truck
Post by: Patrick NC on November 29, 2020, 10:12:47 AM
It didn't take long to figure out that my 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive ram truck is a little on the light side for towing trailer loads of logs. My boss doesn't mind if I use my work truck, but I'd feel better about things if I just got a bigger truck of my own. So this afternoon I'm going to test drive a new Ram 2500 crew cab 4x4. It has the 6.4 hemi and 8 speed transmission. Dealer is doing Black Friday pricing until the end of the month. Right now he's at $41,499. I think that's reasonable for a 3/4 ton crew cab. My 2017 1500 only has 45,000 miles and about $6000 on equity. So I'm going to go try to make a trade. I'll let y'all know how it works out.

Aww man!  There's no hope for you any more!  You've got a horrible case!  I went March to December before I got a bigger truck.  Once you start it's hard to stop!

Many of my farmer friends including myself have went back to gas engines in our heavy duty pickups and like them a lot. I run the 6.2 Ford but several of my friends run the 6.4 Hemi and really like them also. I don't know your area but around here clean low mile pickups bring good money on the private market. I just sold a real nice 2011 chevy 1500 4x4 extend cab with 60,000 miles for a buddy that was going to trade it and got three grand more than he could get on trade. One of my farms is on a major highway and its a good spot to sell trucks from. This one sold the first sat it was parked there.

Patrick, I couldn't touch that truck for less than 60 G's. Here a 2500 is classed as a passenger vehicle and subject to a luxury tax if over 55 grand as most are. A 3500 is a work truck so is exempt and less money, the dealers don't stock 2500/F-250s.

I was satisfied with a half ton pickup for a long long time. Hauled "big" loads. Actually just hauled dangerous loads. Started driving a 450 dually 3 or 4 years back. Sad to say but sometimes you just don't know what you don't know. I can say without hesitation from personal experience, God looks after fools and dumb animals.

I hope it works out.  I've never bought a smaller truck in my life.  Eventually it might happen, but not until I'm done hauling logs, campers, etc.  I started out with a Ford Ranger, then an F150, then an F250 extended cab, then a 250 crew cab and now an F350 crew cab.  I always bought bigger after I realized the current truck was too small for what I was hauling.  Whether that was kids in the back seat or a newer, bigger camper.

Went with a Chevy 1500.
It will pull my 9.9K rig safely just not every day.
Its also my daily driver.
Good price on what your looking at,
I couldn't find that here in the Northeast

Good luck

I started out in 1/2 ton 2wd, and worked up to a 3/4 ton 4wd, you won't regret going bigger for hauling. Throughout this summer my local Dodge dealer lot was the most empty I have ever seen it in 45 years. At one point there were only 3 new pickups left for sale, on a lot that can fit a hundred or more. :o

New gasoline engines are impressive.  I've not been around the bigger ones but the 5.7 Hemi is pretty DanG fast  8) 8)  I went from a Cummins Dodge back to a half ton because I didn't need the capability and wouldn't afford the cost of the diesel.  And I've got an F550 ;D

Well, I made the deal. After taxes and dealer fees it was $45600. Traded my 1500 and put $5000 down. Financed the rest. It's quite a step to get in and out, even being 6'2". I guess I'll start looking at running boards or nerf bars so I'll have a step.

Nice lookin' truck. I bet that 6.4 hemi has some torque.

Keep it out of the dirt and don't scratch it. Now you need a work truck 'cause that one looks too nice for workin'.

I have only driven it about 60 miles (home from the dealer), but the 6.4 seems real stout. The 8 speed transmission shifts smooth and keeps the big hemi in its torque range real well. Should just get better as I get some miles on it and break it in a little.

I got a 1500 with the 5.7 hemi in July and I've been impressed by the torque and the 8 speed trans. The 1/2 ton is fine for 99% of my needs. One of these days I may decide to pick up an older 3/4 ton to go with it.

Enjoy your new truck!  Christmas comes early for you!

The truck that I traded in was a 5.7 hemi with the 8 speed. It had plenty of power, but the rear suspension was really soft. So anytime I hauled anything heavy it felt like the trailer was in control, not the truck. There are probably things that I could have done to make it better, but I was wanting 4 wheel drive. Besides, what better excuse to get a new truck? We trade every 3 or 4 years anyway.

When you need a 3/4 ton (and want a new truck) the best thing is to get one.  I'm not sure if changing suspension on a 1/2 ton gets the same result.  I expect the frame is heavier on a 3/4 ton, but I don't know all the particulars.  I do know that doing a lot of heavy towing with a 1/2 ton is not as good as the 3/4 ton.  Those ratings on the 1/2 ton trucks seem pretty generous except for occasional short flat land towing up near the limits.  You've got a good tool now and the loads won't push you around anymore.  Plus 4WD seems to be a necessity even it's just to get the trailer moving on marginal ground.  I wouldn't want 2WD drive.

Must not be a lot of logs.

When i started moving my machine shop 990 miles one way, it was immediately clear a 12v dually 4x4 was dangerous in front of that much iron and i went to a 2ton international with a 466 and 13 speed.  when i started logging that truck was dangerous too.

Nice truck!  It will handle lots of towing I'm sure.

When I upgraded I decided to go with a one ton crew cab-chassis and have a dump bed built.  It's a heavy sucker at 11,000 pounds!  It still gets 16-18 highway mpg and 9-11 mpg towing anything from my 7k 18' utility trailer to the 14k. deck over to the 9k travel trailer.  It's nice to have a truck with enough weight to pull the travel trailer without sway or wind affecting it much.  And the peace of mind knowing I have stopping power if needed is good.

With all that said when it's paid for I'll add a half ton as my everyday driver.  The 3500 is ok but is challenging in tight places.

A locking flip back hard tonneau cover would be an accessory to consider.  It would reduce loading and unloading tools, equipment and gear.

It's sad the CoCo butter's that work at the factories around
here have the prices on desiel trucks out of control.
They need them to haul their rubbish to the dump on Saturday's.
They sit at the diner with their work buds bragging how much they can haul , fancy rims and tires.
I wonder where have all the work trucks gone.

Pavement Princess. At least, that's how "I" refer to them.

If they are not going to do what a pickup was originally meant to do, then why not get a car?

Here's my Ram Cummins 2500.  Works its butt off every day, but still looks darned nice (to me) after a good scrubbin'.

Congrats on the new ride. I always drive old junk but also found out real quick when I started hauling logs, tractors, and skidloaders that I needed to upgrade from my '88 350 chevy up to a bigger (as in stature) piece of junk so I picked up a '95 Ram 2500 with the V10 and manual transmission. Love having it around but drive it as little as possible because I know it will really hurt the pocket book when I have to replace it.

Any time I get a little jealous of all the shiny new trucks I just remind myself that no one in town has more cylinders than I do. :)

ww9, I am referring to all of the ones floating around here that are all lifted and big tired only to never (and I mean throughout their ownership) be used as a truck. I don't have any problem with a stock and pretty. Or any problem with a tweaked and used. It's the ones that are built but obviously never used; that's MY issue with them!

We get lucky sometimes. It's got 165k on it but I don't think it's ever been driven all that much in winter. It's actually the 2nd time we've owned this truck. We (my dad and I) run an auto repair shop and bought this truck from an elderly customer about 10 years ago when he didn't want to spend the money to fix the front suspension. Not really having a need for another truck at the time we sold it to a friend in Des Moines who mostly used it around his farm. After I got my sawmill a few years ago and realized I needed a bigger truck I was talking to him and found out he wanted to sell it. So now I own it again. The motor has some piston slap but it's remained unchanged since we first worked on the truck over a decade ago. The body is getting some pretty good rust but the frame is solid.

Sawyer Ted what kind of cab and chassis is that with a dump bed that you get 16-18 MPG? That's amazing!! I have a crew cab chassis dodge Cummins with a a flatbed on I get around 9 MPG 👎🏿 It has a 25,000 pound gooseneck on it almost all the time and it's loaded half the time

My 2012 Dodge Cummins has never got good fuel mileage in town or highway empty average 12.5-13.5. I don't know what the new ones get. But I did spec one out.  These trucks are going to be over 100k before long. I did the dodge online pricing with same trim package and features with the H.O. Cummins one ton 3500 I was at 86k. A little more towing capacity 50 hp more and 200 torque. A bigger screen to look at when you should be looking at the road 😂. I did see one at dealer that was priced at 93k 🙄

It is a 2018 Ram 3500 crew with Cummins 6.7.  Highway unloaded it will get 16 mpg sometimes better.  That's with the cruise set and running 60 mph.  Running 65-70 mph it does 12-14 mpg.

Loaded and/or towing the best it has done is 11 mpg.  That is pulling our travel trailer.  Typically it gets 10 mpg towing most loads.  I don't have  CDL so a 7 ton deck over trailer is the biggest I pull.

Yes they are.
21 years ago when I bought my only new vehicle (4x4 Toyota Tacoma V-6 manual transmission xtra-cab), right at 33k when you figure in financing. First new vehicle ever, and likely to be the only one I'll ever have. BTW, I still have it at 300k miles later and it will still start and run like a top, even though it's been relegated to "tractor" duty.
I REALLY like that truck, and will likely quit breathing and still own it!

Our prices will make you weep, I looked at a 2020 Ram 3500 srw quad cab that had a price north of 100 grand. It was fully dressed but still! I paid 15 for my plain jane diesel 2wd 05 Ram ten years ago and considered myself lucky, it is showing its age but has to keep going for a while yet. It will likely be my last vehicle.

The only answer to expensive trucks is for people to quit buying them. Not much incentive to make them cheaper when people seem more than willing to pay more. For the last 20 years my dad and I have been waiting for the bottom to drop out of the truck market but it hasn't happened yet. Suddenly no one thinks they can live without a truck.

Prices are ridiculous these days. My solution is to find a 2 year old, low mileage truck. There are people that buy new and then want the latest model in a couple years. This summer I bought a 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie with a little over 11k miles on it from an individual . Every bell and whistle on it. Pretty much exactly what I wanted and I paid just a bit over half what he paid for it new.

Those deals are out there if you're patient and flexible. I would have preferred a GMC but now I'm a Ram guy and happy with the deal. Saved me a lot of money and I feel like 11k miles is the same as new.

There are good buys on lease returns as well. The high miledge fleet vehicles go to the dealer auction but well maintained trucks show up on the lots. I lucked into a clean 91 in 94 with 60,000 km, it served me well for years.

Both my trucks are 2002's and mint. the one is a Toyota Tundra V8. The other GMC 3/4 ton Duramac diesel. ( bought 11/2 years ago). Couldn't be happier. They shouldn't drop much more value wise. I've been offered more for the Toyota than I paid. Besides it leaves money on the table for other toys that don't depreciate as badly.

I drove the truck around quite a bit the last few days empty (about 500 miles) . Averaging 14.7 miles per gallon. That was calculated by hand. The mileage on the dash shows 15.1. Pretty close. I'm sure the dealer filled it with regular 87 octane and if this 6.4 is anything like my last 2 5.7s it will do better on 89 octane. Some say it doesn't make a difference, but it was worth about 4 mpg average on my 1500. Towed a trailer full of white oak logs this evening. I'm guessing about 12,000 pounds. Pulled good. Plenty of power. Mpg was about 8.

Trucks is trucks!  F-350, Chevy 3500, Ram 3500 they all W,O,R,K!  They all have strong points and they all have weak points.  I picked a Ram 3500 because it had the right features in the cab to make it a "nicer" work truck and had the Cummins 6.7.  Had Chevrolet had a 3500 cab-chassis with the cab features the Ram has, I would be driving a Chevrolet. The Chevrolet work trucks are too austerely equipped to suit me.  I've owned several Chevrolet pick ups, one Ford 150 and a Ram 3500.  All have done the jobs I needed them to at the time.

I want an F-350 cab with a Cummins 6.7 attached to an Allison transmission on a Ram frame with Dana axles and diffs.  This would be my ideal truck.

One of the girls that works for me has a new Equinox?  I think that's what it is anyway. Not that long ago I could tell you what any vehicle was by the tail lights, now I have no idea, anyway, this thing has every gadget you could imagine, including Wi-fi, which makes me cringe when I think about how many failure points there are in there and how many are interconnected.  My '06 D-max has a little over 400K on the clock - most with a gooseneck behind her.  Yes she could use a day trip to the spa, but it does everything I have ever asked it to do.

Would I like to drive a new truck?  Yes, but today that money can buy me a new grade A creamery or another 4WD, 150+ HP row crop tractor, another LULL, a nice, proven, bull, and still have some left over.  Guess I will keep her for a while.

My 2017 Ram 2500 megacab Cummings diesel gets 21 mpg on long highway trips on Interstate.  About 13 - 14 mpg towing the 20' gooseneck with a good load.

ww9, I am referring to all of the ones floating around here that are all lifted and big tired only to never (and I mean throughout their ownership) be used as a truck. I don't have any problem with a stock and pretty. Or any problem with a tweaked and used. It's the ones that are built but obviously never used; that's MY issue with them!
No worries!  I didn't get offended, I actually had a good laugh.  I've got elephant/alligator skin, anyways.
Mine is a 2019.  I haul 2 different 16K trailers, and an 8000 lb. Airstream RV.  That truck has already been to California and back to Illinois, 5500 mile round trip.  My daughter and 2 granddaughters live in California.....and that's the only way I can see them.  You need 3 very strong men and a hydraulic ram to get me on an airplane.
The 2019 has the new redesigned Cummins 6.7L.  Now that it's broken in, I'll get 21 mpg hwy, around 68 mph.  If I go 80, that drops down to about 15 mpg.  Towing a trailer for work, I get around 14 to 15.5 average, with a full load.  I love it, and will probably put a million miles on it if I live long enough.

When I was a kid and first got my drivers license I bought a 1979 F-250 4x4 with a 6" lift kit and 40" tires. I think it had a 351m or a 400 in it. That truck got 4-5 mpg.

My 2015 Ram 1500 diesel gets 19-20 mpg around town or 27-28 hwy. Empty, or fully loaded with 15 bales of pine straw in the bed. Yeah, it's a Pavement Princess but rides better than my 2017 BMW X3 on a rough interstate. At least I didn't have it lifted with a brush guard, winch, fancy light bar and all that other nonsense.

My 2004 Dodge 3500 Diesel with Allison gets 17.2 on the highway loaded without trailer.  215 thousand miles.  It'll be 17 years old in April and that's a lil concerning running up and down the road between here and Maine.  I've been keeping it in good shape because the thought of replacing it is frightening and I still enjoy driving it.  My Son in Law sells both Chevys and Fords for a dealership Fleet sales dept.  He sold 9 today.   End of the year push is on.   I'll be going back to gasoline engines probably but this has been a good truck.    I'll try to make this one last 10 more years. ;D

Yeah because theyre designed for the hotshot trucking industry thats helping to wreck rates on the regular trucking industry.

I found my 3/4 ton Chevy was a little light for pulling my cow trailer, and flatbed trailer, and my spray rig, so started looking for a 1 ton dually, and wound up buying a F450 4x4, V10  with 6 speed manual.  It is an 05 model with 191 K.  Price was right, and bought it on an online auction, from NE Colorado.  The truck has NO RUST, first thing after getting it home blew the dirt out of the rockers and cab corners, had to use water to get it clean, but no rust inside there.  Where I picked up the truck, looked like they run about 1 cow to 80 acres, really dry country. Cool thing is, even the door hinges are tight. Ford must put a lot more  effort into their heavier trucks.

I have come close many times.  Getting DOT and MC are easy.  Putting yourself in the drug consortium and doing the audits and ifta and quarterlies and all that is irritating but doable.  Paying $18 grand for the first year of insurance premiums just ends the thought every single time i call.  The numbers on part time trucking make it impossible, and full time trucking is a crummy life.

Plus my 2ton is a DOT magnet.  Hotshots get a lot more attention that class 8 trucks these days because there are so many more incognito haulers to throw the entire book at.  Number one reason to run a pete or kw is the scales just roll you by.  I never got a single inspection in a 379 breakin all the rules.   Harrassed a lot in a 4door international being pretty legit.

Truckin just isnt part of God's plan for me, thankfully.

A friend of mine used to run several trucks and there was always some drama from him or the drivers. Guys stopping at a casino and then not getting the load there. To him not advancing enough money and the driver leaving the truck along the highway in some other state 😂😂.
