Title: What is our average age?
Post by: Jeff on January 13, 2008, 05:09:39 PM
We have a discussion going on in the sawmill board called LINK>> age of sawmillers (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=29247.0)

I thought I would start a poll where we could get an idea. Before the results even start coming in, I'm betting it is in the mid 40's :)

Look's like my age group is already in front with a huge lead...(1). 8) 8) 8)  I better start a PM campaign to get out the vote. ;D

Don't most members fill out the age data on their profile?  Couldn't you just pull that and get the results?   smiley_headscratch

Some do, some don't.  This is totally anonymous this way. Folks that dont want to tell us how old they are can participate without having it hung on their profile. It lets us find an approximate average and maybe have a little fun as well.  I suppose I could dig into the database and get the average of the listed ages, but, I dont wanna. ;D ;)

I've been pretty sure for a long time now that it is in the early to mid 50's, but you'll only know based on those that actually complete the poll.
We have tons of folks that won't even see it that can easily throw the average off.

I doubt it will be off much. The odds are an equal number of older people will miss it to younger people. To be off, you would have to believe that one age group or another is more apt to miss the poll. I'm not brave enough to go there. ;)

Are we supposed to answer with:

1. Feel like age
2. Act like age
3. Chronological age
4. Pretend age

Those are all different for me and some change daily.

That's funny Tom.  ;D :D

One of the things I always looked for in his movies was he himself walking across a scene. Unless you already saw the movie, you never knew where he would appear. Sometimes even if you saw it, you were still looking the next time you watched it. ;D

I'm still looking for some of his cameo's.  I was told that they can appear anywhere in the film.  I always looked for it in the beginning.

Of the few films I have on DVD he was on fairly early on.

Spoiler Alert  smiley_exclamation smiley_exclamation

In "North By Northwest", he climbs onto the bus just after the credits. In Vertigo, he crosses the street after the first office scene carrying a black object.

I think those of us that some of you view as younger *are* here as a measure of respect.  Life experience is worth a lot and if younger folks would take the time to listen to folks who've already been down that road, they might find life a lot easier.

Right now, I'm going through "the transition".  I'm not quite 40 yet and still consider myself young.  However, I've been letting lots of the 'kids' from church use my shop/garage to work on their vehicles.  Trying to change out a water pump at -35 F just ain't no fun unless you're in a heated shop with compressed air and some of those types of goodies.

The realization that I'm in this 'transition period' was sort of a rude awakening.  See, the 'kids' (who are all well into their 20's) kept calling me Mr 'Warbird', and saying "thank you so much", and in one case, the kid couldn't get one of the water pump bolts loose and was worried about twisting the head off of it.  So I showed him a few tricks and we got 'er done.  The look on his face when that bolt loosened up is something I hope to remember for a long time.  He was so happy it was just great.  That young man just got married and it was his girl friend's (now wife's) car.

Anyway...  it was shocking to realize that these 'kids' were looking up to me the way I look up to my Elders at church or some of you guys around here.  Yeah, younger folks *should* respect their elders and try to learn from them.  It doesn't always happen that way in today's world but when it does, it sure is special.

The realization that I'm in this 'transition period' was sort of a rude awakening.

Same thing for me.  I teach music at a local college, and one day I came in to hear a student do an audition.  I had to wait outside the audition room for awhile because I was earlier, so I heard a sax player doing his audition through the door.  He was a pretty good player and the girl who was waiting to go next started to get really nervous.  She kept looking in and listening to the guy who was playing, and starting to look more and more apprehensive with each moment.  She saw me and then said, "Man...he's really good.  Is he your son?"   :o   :D

I didn't know that I looked old enough to have a high school senior as a son...but since I'm in my late thirties, I guess it's not inconceivable.

I'm definitely in that transition period too.   ::)

I was 19 or 20. :D Then when I got to 37 I had no hair left on top, so then I knew I didn't have a chance. Seems hair makes a big difference to some people.  :D :D Does chest hairs count? At 57 this comin' March I got to thinking about how you "have to" work smarter, not harder. One of the same really. So I wonder how much more innovative we become with age just out of necessity alone.
I'm a builder in renovations and just yesterday I had to get a bay window in alone.UGH.
In the old days if I didn't have any help available at the time I'd probably have muscled it up to one platform on some saw horses 4 feet up and then onto another right by the window opening.
Yesterday I decided to do it a safer and more efficient way which was to spend the time setting up some pump jacks....strapped the bay window onto it and pumped each side up slowly then slipped er' right in like.......uhhh...well...just slipped er' in  8).
I think a different portion of your brain kicks in the older you get.

We have our house up for sale now and once we're out of here we'll probably be moving on to a more rural area...maybe in the Asheville NC area where I'd like to get started learning timber framing and build my own. Been told its a "youngs man sport"...screw that...I'm just needing  to use this new section of brain I discovered...lol.
So at 57 I'm guessing I'm gonna be getting into sawyer work and timber Framing along with my regular home renovations I've been doing the past 30+ years.
Work smart/not hard (so to speak).
Be well
andy

Funny about that, I'll see those Thomas loaders half way across the country and locally a lot of Bobcats. :D

Yeah they make the Thomas loaders in town. We had two and they lasted a long time. Dad had one all my life on the farm. Used it to shovel potatoes and clean up around the conveyors, move machinery. A big potato processing empire bought the company out years ago and sold to a Korean firm 3 or 4 years ago and then some how bought it back. I think the Koreans wanted the patents. They still build a few here.

The mechanic was working on the chain drive and I must say it was very rugged. Much heavier than our Case 1835, and it went 10,500 without much work on the chain drive part. The Thomas has been a pretty reliable machine, especially consideriny the people that have been using it since new. :o

Well I spose this should be appropriate to put here.
John Stewart of the Kingston Trio fame just died. A true legend.
I think this thread may be worthy of this clip.

We have a discussion going on in the sawmill board called LINK>> age of sawmillers (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=29247.0)

I thought I would start a poll where we could get an idea. Before the results even start coming in, I'm betting it is in the mid 40's :)

Jeff, you'd better "up" that a bit by the looks of it.

Man, what a nice "bell curve".  I'm surprised too Jeff that the average age is a bit older than I thought, although I thought it would be one step up from you.

That curve is "textbook" though.  Good distribution of ages.

What is our average age?

I tried to figure my average age and kept getting 1 !?

I took my age and divided it by the number of birthdays I've had and keep getting the same answer.   ???

I am much more experienced than the average age of the survey responders. I am not one to boast, but I happen to have the energy of someone twice my age!

And I think I am doing quite well, there are only 21 who voted in age groups higher than me and I can still get out of bed in the morning under my own power, just not as fast as I did 40 yrs ago. 8)

If it says remove vote, it means you already voted. If you don't remember voting, then it means you are probably old. ;)   You can remove your vote, then vote again if you think you were wrong the first time.

When you have a birthday you might change brackets like I just did.  So remove vote and add it back in the next one down.  Depressing, maybe, but it beats the alternative if you don't have more birthdays.
